Great intro course for those with no clue and a great addition to those with limited knowledge of the subject. I like the fact that the author uses a variety of persons and situations to illustrate the concept. He doesn't just use St Augustine for his whole book, he draws from a variety of secular and non secular sources. Well rounded and easy to read. Disturbing only in the fact that very few politicians practice this tradition today! Maybe the Pauls(Ron and Rand) and a handful of very few others.

Don't read this unless you want to think. Whether you come from the pacifist tradition or a more hawkish one, this book will make you examine your suppositions. Worth the read.

Do not let the title fool you this book is not geared at idiots by any means but rather presents the basic concepts of alchemy in an easy to understand format that is by no means dumbed down. If you have ever been curious about the practice of alchemy or really desire a practical break down of its concepts then this book is a must read. Hauck, a published practicing, well respected modern day alchemist, provides enough basics to whet the knowledge hungry appetite without any insult to the intelligence. I really detest the titles for these series of books by calling them Idiot Guides or For Dummies because many of the books in this series are very well written no nonsense explanatory guides and do not indulge in the gobbledygook and jargon heavy lingo that has become the hallmark of much topic specific writing in this modern age

This is an absolute must for anyone who is interested in magic, the occult or simply the history of such things. In fact, if you read one book cover-to-cover before beginning the practice of eclectic magic, let it be this one. The concepts are presented in a very straightforward manner that is accessible to the beginner and informative to even the most seasoned practitioner.

You're better off reading the original sources about alchemy the way Jung did- thankfully most have been translated into English by 2016 and are freely available. Bluntly- this is a disappointing overview even if you're only vaguely interested in the topic. Read or skim some of the primary sources and draw your own conclusions about delving further. You don't need to spend $ on this book.

It is an excellent book about all the principles and operations of alchemy with details about history and the symbolic meaning of many things in the art. It introduces the laboratory practice too. It is a comprehensive book about this subject and it is useful not only for beginners.

This was written by a literal master of the subject. Its fabulous. The author gives you lessons in history and spiritual growth. And an important part of the book explains that Carl Jung was literally an alchemist. And that his work in psychoanalysis is actually a result of his realizing that the human psyche can be helped by the teachings and framework of alchemy.

I like this book because it gives the reader the break down of Alchemy and how it can be used: however it still leaves the reader with many questions that only a more in-depth book could truly answer. This book did not have me convinced that Alchemy can help transmute karma, either way it seems everything in it boils down to timing the entire process of transformation.

Good book for a general overview with detailed drawings showing different usages of symbols in alchemical art (as in artistic, but also in terms of The Art and Great Works). Definitely worth the price until Amazon billed me again 9 months later.

I read this so long ago, but forgot to leave a review for it so I will do it now and try to recall it from memory. I really enjoyed this book. It is a very straightforward history on Alchemy, it's practices, and explains later in the book how alchemy can still be used to benefit our lives. I enjoy the idea of alchemy in the spiritual sense. You are constantly adding, taking away, and refining to get to that purest point. I didn't read the book for the material context of turning actual things into gold, so I couldn't speak much on that point. If you are like me though, and find this topic interesting, then this book is a great starting point.

This is #1 in The Miami Jones Mystery series.I was given a free copy of this and I am reviewing because of the free copy.I felt the editing could have been better. Words were missing and a few misspelled words were found. Perhaps because it was an e-book, the editing wasn’t well done. For me this was way too much like Myron Bolitar and Win. I also didn’t think things were very well defined in the book. Miami just ends up places and you wonder why he made the jump to there. Anyway, that is the way I was reading this. I see retribution for those guys in the book that needed it, like Win does for Myron. We even had the mob in on this and that didn’t seem to be defined either. We were to assume this?I am giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. I would have liked more originality. I did like the setting as I do live in Florida. Hopefully the next book will be better and not so much like Harlan Coben.

My top literary detectives are Spenser and Travis McGee. They follow a moral code that is far more important to them than what their clients want, they are tough, they are funny and they inhabit a world filled with interesting characters. Put these two guys together, and you have Miami Jones, the protagonist of Stiff Arm Steal. I don't mean to suggest that A.J. Stewart is the next coming of Robert Parker of John D. MacDonald. It's way too early for that. But he's off to a good start. In short, if you like good detective stories, give this one a chance. Jones is a compelling, fully realized character, his supporting cast is interesting and believable, his wise-cracking is top-notch, the South Florida setting is a ripe one for story-telling and Stewart pulls off this first story in the series as if he has been writing this character for a long time. Great stuff.

I went through Amazon's free kindle books. I picked out eight books. I tried to read four with out good results. Then I started this tale. I really like Miami Jones, Ron, and the Deputy Danielle. The characters have wit and personality. The story was interesting. I recommend this book and this author.

The dialogue is good but the plot is weak and it moves at a very slow pace until the final 70 pages. Also, does anyone proof read anymore? Examples include "to much" rather than "too much". Also, there is a reference to a former MLB player and his name is spelled correctly the first time but mispelled every subsequent time. These are just few of the annoying mistakes in this book. I doubt I will I read anymore offerings from this author. There are many other authors in this genre to choose from.

Stewart is a good writer and he has a likable cast of characters who act and speak convincingly. I was reading along having a fine time when it happened -- the really preposterous coincidence. Unbelievable, implausible, ridiculous. It was like tripping over something or stubbing a toe. Annoying. Embarrassing. Yet the story moved confidently along and the characters continued to be believable and likable. Except that he expected me to be a little stupid and a lot gullible, Mr. Stewart kept me entertained for most of the book. However, I won't read any other installments in the series as I feel disrespected. I guess the theory is that readers today aren't really that smart. Hmmm.

I wouldn’t call Miami Jones a “Spenser, with an s” or a Jack Reacher. The Robert B. Parker and Lee Child characters spend time telling the reader what it means to be a bad-ass. Jones is too laid back to be a bad-ass. At the same time, he’s not going to take any more grief than he has to.Miami Jones doesn’t have Spenser's’ “lit. wit”. Jones is a smart-ass of a different color. He knows he has to play the game. However, his lead is a bit longer than most.I like the character. Enough to have purchased “Offside Trap”.I can't say anymore without giving the reader too much info but, there is a turning point in the book where one feels Jones needs to step up to the plate, and he does. I found myself feeling this character deserves resolution more than Jones' client.I don’t normally bring up typos or anything grammar related. There is always someone around eager enough to tell the world his grammar is better than the author's.One thing though and I hope it’s a typo. A sentence on page 210, Kindle version, reads, “Hands better suited to light opera then pro football.”“Then” should be “than”.These days, “then” is used more and more where “than” should be used. One sees this so many times, one thinks it’s an epidemic.I'll let Grammar Girl take over.""Than" conveys a comparison. "Then" has an element of time. For example, it can mean "next" or "at that time."" From, Mignon Fogarty, Grammar Girl. at Quick and Dirty Tricks, online.

These stories never get old. Miami Jones joins a pretty big group of former athletes who wind up as private investigators (or lawyers) and who are constantly finding themselves in trouble.Miami Jones does a good job of being one of these guys and A.J. Stewart does a pretty good job of weaving a storyline that's fun to read and easy to follow. And the cast of characters is well constructed as well, with flaws as well as good things going for them. And the way the characters work with each other makes for a well done beach read (even if the players in the book are the ones going to the beach instead of you.)This was book number one in the Miami Jones series, but was done well enough to get THIS reader interested in other storylines. If you like cop thrillers, this series will probably be a good place for you to spend some quality time reading. It works for me.

Children will enjoy the parallels of these presidential lives and their own, from Franklin Roosevelt's helicopter mother to Hebert Hoover's friendships with Native Americans to Barack Obama's tumultuous years in Indonesia. Disorganized kids will be happy to read that John F. Kennedy was given a scathing report card that once stated that he "can seldom locate his possessions." Kids will especially enjoy the section on pranks pulled by previous presidents. Oddly, this book is not organized chronologically, nor is each segment broken down into any rational sequence. Overall, the style is funny and lighthearted. Being a kid isn't always easy, even for those on the path for greatness, like many of these men. The further reading at the end of book provides a nice resource for those who want to learn more about their favorite resident of the Oval Office. Give this fun and accessible title to "Who Was…" series (Penguin) fans or reluctant readers who enjoys history.—Keith Klang, Port Washington Public Library, NY

"Mom, this book is really good!" My daughter is in second grade, and she loves this book. This non-partisan book presents Presidents from all sides of the political spectrum: Reagan, Obama, Lincoln, and more. It even debunks the George Washington cherry-tree story, using humor to do so.The full-color book is filled with terrific illustrations, and the pages are not text-dense, making for easier reading for elementary students. The hardcover binding would make this a durable addition to a classroom or library.

I homeschool my ten year old son. This year I wanted to teach him about U.S. Presidents. Each day we read about one of the presidents (from another president book) and then read a passage from this Kid Presidents book. This book is funny, inspiring, informative, and extremely entertaining. Especially for my son. He looks forward to the fun facts we read about each president every day. If you're looking for a fun read for any kids interested in U.S. History, I highly recommend this book.

This book is full of relatable stories that help humanize our presidents for kids. We also have Kid Athletes, which is on heavy rotation in our house. We started reading them to our daughter when she was 5 but I think that she will continue to enjoy these books for several more years, especially when she starts learning about these important figures in school. These are our go-to gifts for birthdays. Yes, I am one of those awful adults that gift kids books for their birthdays and Christmas.

I got this book for my 8 year old because he loves presidents. The illustrations and stories are fun. However, he isn't able to read it all by himself. It's not a beginning reader type of book. And there is more text than I thought there would be. It's fine, but it's going to be a book we'll have to read to him until he's a bit older and can read it alone.

Ok, my son is 9 years old and loves History and has had this book for a couple of years. He LOVED learning facts about the presidents growing up. Some are very funny and sweet. I actually enjoyed it as well. This is one of my favorites, and there are several others that are must haves if your kids enjoy history.

This was one of those collections of information that my reluctant readers would just eat up. It doesn't linger on any one president's story for too long, and it's just enough to constitute a good source of information for kids. I'd happily recommend this book to my students if they were in the market for nonfiction. Both fun and informative.

I don't always leave a review for books. I think it might be a personal matter. However, my 2nd grader loved this book. She picked it up and read it herself. She found it very interesting. Very age appropriate.

This fascinating, fast read will take you through the lives of presidents when they were kids. It goes through their friendships, family relations, tough times, and fun times.

This is a really cool book! I was looking for a nonfiction book to read with my third grade LD students and happened upon this little gem. I love the stories - they are very accessible, not too long, but not too short. They keep the readers' attention and engage kids in conversation about the presidents. A really fun find!

This book teaches the moveable do system of solfege by having the reader do sightsinging from musical notation. Solfege assigns syllables to the 12 notes of a chromatic scale. I definitely think sightsinging is a good way to train your ear, but this book is not a good introduction to ear training. There is no CD, so it's hard for you to know if you're doing it right or not, and there's also not a lot of explanatory text after the first few pages.Everything is in musical notation. There are rhythmic exercises (clap and sing along to musical notation, but with no pitch), sight recognition exercises (naming the solfege functions with musical notation, without rhythm), sol-fa studies (singing the solfege symbols without musical notation), melodic studies (sight-singing from musical notation, with rhythm)The workshops increase in difficulty by introducing new keys, new time signatures, and new scales. You start with major scales and then move to minor (melodic, real, harmonic), and then go into modes.I think the useful idea of this book as that you should sightsing everything to establish your inner ear. But you don't need this book to sightsing, you can do that with any introductory book that teaches you to sight-read on your instrument, once you understand the solfege system.A better book is Ear Training for the Contemporary Musician, which also teaches moveable do solfege (although they don't call it that), and comes with a CD of exercises where you have to transcribe scales, chord progressions, and so on. It also has a lot more explanatory text which really helps explain some basic music theory concepts.Another book I've just come across which I like (and has two CDs) is The "Real Easy" Ear Training Book which focuses on hearing the chord changes to popular songs and is a good followup to the book by Wyatt, Schroeder, and Elliott.

I can see this book being very usefull as part of a university degree, in the classroom, with a teacher and classmates to help out. The theory covered on the first chapter is small but good quality overall. The exercises are interesting and well explained.I found really hard to take advantage of this material on my own. I couldn't measure my progress and correct my mistakes properly. In the end, I found that Hearing and Writing Music: Professional Training for Today's Musician (2nd Edition) was much easier to study on my own.

This is a great book for visual-ear training.Step by step, the exercises take you to the point of hearing what you're reading! There are no "blind tests" though; maybe a CD including some audio drills could be the perfect complement.

Every music teacher and musician should have this book it's perfect for practicing rhythm reading, ear training, and sight singing.

Missing tracks records. You should work very concious or you just going to waste your time. Whithout tracs, thi book is recomended to advanced trainers

good

Reviewers who consider this to be "outdated" are exactly right--and they miss the whole point. It's certainly "out-of-date" (copyrighted 1902), which is why it's an historical treasure for serious students of stamp collecting. To me, it beautifully describes the roots of my own personal enjoyment of collecting international postage stamps. The historical background information contained here is very important.

I read this more for the historical interest, and it certainly is a worthwhile addition to any philatelist's library. Still the king of hobbies.

Another excellent book on postage stamps, and you don!t have to have a fortune to collect stamps neither Great read EDDIEFAB NC

BORING CONFUSING< NO PICTURES, just text, long winded 1950 style boring how to text.

I deleted as it lacked the helpful stamp illustrations -- a disappointment and not worth the time taken to download.

great product

Bought this as a novelty gift for my stamp-collecting father. He loved it. Shipping was quick and this vintage book came in great shape. Thank you!

Another excellent Exalted book full of crunchy bits to let players and NPCs alike dazzle and impress with martial arts of every sort. The wide range of martial arts is astounding. There's a martial art for social butterflies. For the hedonist. For assassins. Using music. For straight up brawlers. And many more. The only disappointments were, strangely, the Sidereal styles. They're incredibly powerful and very exotic. In many ways too powerful or exotic for the average player or GM. Still, the book as a whole is filled with a lot of interesting things for all sorts of Exalted games, even the social intrigue ones.

Table of contentsIntroduction 4Chapter one the martial arts world 8Chapter two terrestrial martial arts 39Chapter three celestial martial arts 81Chapter four sidereal martial arts 109Appendix 150

I loved this book. Have many choices to your character to be. Has offensive, defensive, couter and many varieties of attacks. All them are nice.

Scroll of the Monk was one of the first supplements released for Exalted, Second Edition, and in hindsight it really set the tone for the line. The book takes a very cool idea--exploring all sorts of crazy magical kung-fu--and then delivers half-baked mechanics that will cause serious trouble at your table if you ever attempt to use them. The problems manifest in many different ways. Some styles are just a little weak but there's little that's wrong with them--this is true of most Terrestrial Martial Arts. Other styles have one or more problematic Charms that lead to cheap tactics that can win combat regardless of any circumstances (e.g., Distracting Finger-Gesture Attack allows characters to prevent an enemy from ever getting to act in combat). And finally, other styles are just so hilariously, comprehensively broken that it's hard to understand what the writer was thinking (e.g., Obsidian Shards of Infinity). It's fairly obvious that this material was never playtested, because the problems are jarring and jump out to anyone with some experience in tabletop games. It's also fairly obvious that the developer for this book was on holiday: there was no one giving this material a sanity check. This is a sloppily-made product that will cause you grief.Scroll of the Monk is a byword for terrible quality in at least three Exalted communities, so I'm at a loss as to how to explain the five-star rating for this product on Amazon.

Will make this short. Excellent book. A must have. Now the long explanation.Cool moves, different martial arts, the three level of power can be felt.Even though I dislike the idea that Siderials have SUCH power in their hands and dont teach em it is a great idea. Really. Something that Solars have to ask to be taught.Powerlevel is cool, moves sound fantastic, setting for the Martial Arts World or Society and the uses of it, how mortals can learn em, how Dragon Blooded can touch Celestial level and how Siderials rule the maximum apex of the Lotus of Perfection. Sublime! Now this in comparison to Sorcery is way extremely powerful. That is kinda my complaint in here. Sorcery is supposed to be the most terrific and overwhelming power to have. But the Siderial Martial Arts can undo spells and even reverse em. And many moves seem even more useful than taking actions to cast a spell and spending huge amounts of essence to achive small effects.Martial Arts is an important part of the setting and this book raises the word when you say POWER! A must have!

The Scrolls of Esoteric Wisdom Volume I: Scroll of the Monk (Note: the cover does not mention the Esoteric Wisdom part, but the ad for the Scroll of Lesser Races [sidebar, p.2] mentions that it is the Esoteric Wisdom series) has set the bar for quality of this series within White Wolf's Exalted Second Edition line. Not only does it elaborate on the Martial Arts world within Creation (Fight clubs?) and add several pages of long-awaited weapons (I've been hearing cries for garrotes, kamas, nunchaku, and tonfas ever since I started playing Exalted two years ago), the bulk of the book contains enough supernatural Martial Arts to quench any asiophile's thirst. The chapter on Terrestrial Martial Arts alone would have been worth the money I spent on this book. The diversity introduced, adding to the flexibility of Martial Arts (and proving that nearly anything can be a *martial* art) has caused nearly every player in a Dragon-Blooded story I'm working on create a martial artist. Yet no two characters are the same. One character was birthed in a brothel, and knows Orgiastic Fugitive Style (the learning of which requires "meditative sex"). Another is an informant for the All-Seeing Eye, and infiltrated the Fivefold Shadow-Hand Association, and learned their ninjutsu-style martial arts. A third prophesied the disappearance of the Scarlet Empress, and has learned the social kung-fu of the White Veil Society ("There is no White Veil Society. It is not cunningly concealed among the... Dragon-Blooded socialites of the Realm... No one would suggest that its members have a political agenda..."). And another is a street rat from Nexus, who learned the rough-and-rumble First Pulse Style while fighting for his life. The Celestial Martial Arts chapter is a notch less interesting, with most styles reprinted (though updated!) from First Edition. This time around, however, they use the updated battle system, and are all in one place (as opposed to ten different book in the previous version of the game).Sidereal Martial Arts, finally, is the first time I've seen canon Charms listed with Essence or Ability requirements above six. For example, "Meditative Battlefield Escalation" (p.118), with requirements of Martial Arts 8, Essence 8. Considering that all characters max out at Essence 10, it is apparent that the strength of these martial artists is great (Such as a lesser Charm than the above, which essentially turns the player into the Storyteller for one scene), and though it would take a long and/or high-powered game to bring such powers out, they are entertaining to read ("What if my character could do THAT! Wow...") and possibly just as much to use.Definitely a good buy. Worth every cent I spent.
