Love this book already bought 3 times in the last month after my first buy at a bookstore. Great gift for young parent activists who want to impart good values to their kids.

This book is perfect!It is a compilation of photos and quotes from children that attended the Women's March in January 2017. It goes through issues like equality, democracy, activism and feminism and avoids all political opinions. It sticks to the core issues without turning it into a debate over party lines or presidents.For being a book with such small dimensions, it is full of inspiring and amazing quotes, explanations of key words and photos. I highly recommend it as a book to read to elementary children and up to connect at their levels on these topics and encourage them to be the voice of their generation.

Used to be indoctrination starts at College-University level. Now they're starting them as early as 5 years. Check them out from your local indoctrination library.In one page, it states: "If there is a mess, it's our job to fix it." Good enough, and so on the opposite page, a child is carried aloft on an adult's shoulder with a child holding aloft a sign with nothing in it---just a bunch of scribbles. In one page, it states: "Adults are harder to convince than kids." Exactly right! It is so much easier to convince these kids about what they know nothing about!! After all, adults pay taxes and the vast majority of them still don't believe in the tooth fairy!Then a picture of a really small child who most likely can barely talk is now holding up a sign stating "WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED." ??! On another page, a toddler is holding a sign "I DISSENT" (what could a 5 year old possibly be dissenting about?) then another page states "Fight For Those Who Don't Have A Voice." (which is good...millions of animals are used and horribly abused, but I doubt this book is what it is after.)Now we know what all those Californian gender studies majors are up to. I think books like these are meant for 18-50 yr. old far-left adults...with the mentality of a 5-9 yr old. They even mention feminism. But would books like these point out that females have more rights and "heaps & heaps" more privileges in countries like Canada and the USA? NOooo! Heaven forbid!!This book is a perfect example why Liberalism is a mental illness. Many Americans like to claim that they live in the freest country in this planet, but how free are we really when the very young are being mind controlled even before they're able to actually write?

I absolutely love this little book that shares photos of children at the Women's March on Washington, along with quotes from kids and explanations of words such as "feminist" and "democracy". Many times when a novel portrays every day life circumstances and relationships it reads slow and, unless saved by incredible diction, is a bore. Cherokee America manages to both portray real people living in real times and still COMPEL you to keep turning the page.Verble has meticulously researched this book and it shows. But it never feels like you've suddenly been plunged into a dry lecture about 19th century Cherokee society. She indeed shows and doesn't tell. From beautiful things like how a question is answered with a story from the past to how Tribe is an entity both past and present to ugly things like the life of blacks at the time within the Nation to the limits placed on women (black women more so than Cherokee women). In all ways, it was balanced, nuanced, and empathetic. I enjoyed it greatly!

This wonderful novel is full of fully-detailed characters, suspenseful and exciting plot, and beautiful descriptions. It is a revealing look into a too-often ignored time and place in American history. As her essay on lithub.com (and the novel's afterword) reveals, the story is based on the author's family history -- one can only hope for more from her in the future!

Some books need a bit of patience as the author slowly unfurls the complexity of the story and of the characters on the written page. Cherokee America is one such book that demands the reader follow the lead of the author as she fills in details that a quicker narration might leave unexplored.The main story is that of Check, a strong willed, soon to be widowed mother of five headstrong young boys who faces life with calm resolution and intelligence. But, more than simply the story of one character, the book gives each of the many characters in the book their own voice and their own view on the events as they unfold. The threads of events are carried forward from the point of view of changing protagonists and the cumulative effect is a story of real depth and beauty. This does mean that you need to keep track of everyone and this can be bit of a hurdle as you slowly get to know who's who in this massive tale.The story takes a long time to get moving but, if you can be a patient reader, is it a rewarding one. The first actual crisis doesn't arrive until around page 100 and there were times when I wondered if the book would simply be a poetic tribute to the life of the Cherokee people after the Civil War. However, the events begin to ramp up and, with the plethora of characters, it takes a good fifty pages or so just to keep the different characters straight in your head, so perhaps launching into full swing at page 100 makes sense! By the time the first crisis occurs, you have begun to care deeply for each player even as their flaws and frustrations and, in case of the young men, their shenanigans are exposed. The intertwined familial lines and histories are complex and often difficult to keep track of and I hope that the final book (I read a galley) will have a family tree to help the reader keep things straight! What does come through are the strong connections and loyalties between the families that are passed down in oral histories through the generations.The story is based on real people and it left me wanting to learn more about these histories that so little has been written about. I have not yet read Verble's Pulitzer prize winning book 'Maud's Line' but will definitely be seeking it out after this marvelous book.

This simple setting, the hub center of the town, serves as a surprisingly perfect opening. Not only do we get a solid sense of Check's no-nonsense way of viewing her neighbors and townsfolk, but also her compassion for the downtrodden. I felt like I was there with Check as she rescues a dying infant's life.This is the Cherokee Nation after the Civil War, after the land was ravaged for supplies from the armies, and the people are still attempting to cover the scars, both over the land and within themselves. There are people like Sanders, who walked the Trail of Tears and came out of the War with next to nothing, besides two wives named Nancy. There's Puny, a former slave whose grief turns into a desperate quest for gold and a way to change his circumstances. And Check, who misses her Tennessee home, who is raising her children with a dying husband waiting at home. They keep to the Bible, while not wholly believing in or trusting all it represents. Claiming the whites' religion hasn't saved them from walking the trail to this new land, and it can't save Check's abolitionist husband an early grave. Still, Check keeps her farm running and family together as best she can. Rather than split into chapters, the book is divided by titled scenes, interconnecting the story in a refreshing and fluid way. While usually told from Check's perspective, we also see through the eyes of secondary and even minor characters like Check's sons, Sanders and the two orphaned boys. As the story unfolds, pieces of a larger puzzle come together in an exciting way. The author, a member of the Cherokee Nation herself, uses the Cherokee alphabet and language through the book, which lends another layer of immersion to Verble's story. I loved learning about Cherokee culture, alongside the darker aspects on both sides of the Civil War and all that came after. Big events often have small beginnings. In the case of Cherokee America, a baby's death drives a man to gold, a fever that quickly encompasses the whole town. Check and her family learns they are some of only a few who weren't aware of the Wartime legend. And like it or not, the Singers are quickly embroiled in the inevitable conflict that comes after. Check struck me from the moment I first met her and I've found her character and spirit have lingered with me after. Great heroes aren't always the most obvious, and Check's determination, her love for her family and her people no matter their skin color or creed is what truly saves the day in the end. An expertly crafted picture into the heart of America after the Civil War, Verble's historical drama is sure to capture readers to favor strong characters and compelling plots. I recently returned from a waterfall getaway weekend to New York. This book was excellent in deciding which general area I wanted to go too and also several of the specific wateralls or "glens" with waterfalls. The descriptions were good, for the most part, and the pictures let you visualize the waterfalls.So, that is the positive. The negative is in the detail. Namely, maps and directions. A map showing how to get to the waterfalls for each area would have been very helpful in addition to the general description. I, personally, find maps more easy to understand than descriptions. Also, the directions were sometimes excellent, but sometimes convoluted or only good if starting at a specific location. Again, a map would have helped with the directions if they included a cross street to enter into a GPS.Overall, if you are not familiar with Waterfalls in New York, which I wasn't, this book was excellent in helping me decide that I wanted to make a trip here and that I wanted to go to the Ithaca region. It was also very helpful in selecting which specific waterfalls I would hike into. But once we got to Ithaca and were actually going to the areas with waterfalls, my friend and I primarily used another book that included maps to each waterfall.

Let me start by stating what this book is not. It's not a book, which covers all the waterfalls in NY. It doesn't cover even 1/50s of the waterfalls in NY. For that you need to go to the web sites (including the ones made by the authors of this book) and/or buy Scott E. Brown's "New York Waterfalls: A Guide for Hikers and Photographers". This book's goal is to show only the main waterfalls of the state and provide their photos and good descriptions. Each photo covers the full page and is amazing. One can learn how to photograph falls from them! Highly recommend!

Decent photos and good descriptions of the falls. Many of the photos were taken during periods of low water so were not as appealing but I think the purpose of the book is not to entertain you but to help you go out and see them for yourself. Maps are helpful for general locations but not so much for exact locations. There are specific directions but personally I find a small detailed map to be helpful.Something I didn't like or understand is that they broke up the state into 6 regions but only covered 5 of them.

Great book; what a nice way to see various falls in NYS; who knew there were so many,It makes a great armchair travel log or it can be used a a trip planning book.Photos are great; that is; beautiful.The description are very helpful as well. The descriptions give good directs ( I hope) to locating each fall by car and then gives detailed information about how long of a walk or hike it would be from parking spot to the actual falls.Worth the money. Could be a good "coffee table" book over the "holidays". Our local library featured it and I'm glad they did.

I like the book is separated by geographic area. I don’t like that some great waterfalls are left out. This is definitely for informational use and it’s not a coffee table book.

Wonderful book. It includes some old photos which show what some of the falls looked like around 1900, but not today. The photo on the cover shows the walkways through Watkins Glen; my grandfather did the survey work to design those walkways.

I have nothing bad to say about this book except I wish everything was written and laid out like this - ie hiking trails. It has just enough of the important history, a full page photo, maps, walking times, general waterfall information and breaks it out into regions instead of alphabetical so you can easily assess what's in the area without a lot of flipping around. Love love love it! In fact I had to buy another one because my visiting friend stole my copy ;)

Really enjoy the color photos by Ed Smathers.

i am no architecture student, but a good number of these seem like bungalows. I bought this book because i liked looking at the photographs of the homes. i like craftsman style homes and there are a lot of those in here. it is a pretty book and I still enjoy flipping through it from time to time.

I see a lot of books about Craftsman style bungalows, but this one is more about interior design than the actual style of the house. It gave me tips for how to use things I already have in the home to decorate my house.

I love this workbook! We have a very scholastic 3.5 year old and it’s just the right amount of reading an math for her, lots of letter practicing, alphabet, and critical thinking. We jump around through the book but it’s designed to be done in sections, as in cover to cover. I really like how many different types of activities there are: coloring, less and more exploration (addition and subtraction), color by number etc. teaches kids how to follow directions.There are so many different things to do, that it constantly keeps her engaged for long periods of time. She doesn’t want to stop the activity book, which is a great sign. I’m so pleased with the book. Also, there are little ‘end of chapter tests’ which are short and designed to test what was covered in that section.There are some stickers at the end of the book, but as there are over 300 pages, there aren’t nearly enough stickers. They got used up within a few days...because kids love stickers!

This book is awesome!! We originally got this book when my son turned 3 and it became clear he wasn't quite ready for it- he didn't have the patience for all the tracing. I waited a while and tried again, and now he loves it! He's almost 4 now and he can write his name, identify all his letters and numbers, and his writing is getting better every day. I feel like he will be more than prepared for starting school next year (his birthday is in October, so he's past the cutoff for starting this year.) I definitely plan on getting my daughter her own copy of this workbook when she's old enough.

I'm a stay at home Dad and taking on the task to educate my youngest . I'm happy to say that this booklet is a great starter . My youngest and I have been working through this book everyday . I have taken on a reviewers idea , which is to use a binder with clear plastic pockets . This has allowed use to use white board eraser pins and am able to continue to reuse the pages out of the booklet . Not only has my youngest enjoyed using the pins but has progressed very well . I really do think that this booklet has what any Pre-K starter needs . I'm very pleased and impressed with my youngest achievements . I would diffidently recommend this well put together booklet for your Pre-K starter . I will look onto Scholastic for more educational booklets.

Perfect for my 4.5 year old that loves to do "school" with his sister. We homeschool and this will be perfect for him to keep busy and feel like he has his own school work too!

I was very excited to receive this book and was extremely disappointed in the format of it. It looks like test prep for preschoolers. "Bubble in the answer" They are little kids! I honestly don't think a 4 year old has any business bubbling in anything! They should be working on skills- writing, coloring, math, cutting, not bubbling in answers. Highly inappropriate for this age group, if you ask me. I am a former teacher and this just really disappoints me. I will be returning this item.

Great learning tool for my 3 year old grandchild who loves to work in this book. She can't get enough of this one it is very easy to teach her skills that are for older children.

I purchased this book to work with my PK4 student over the summer. We worked on several pages a day in addition to reading. It covered a lot of great skills and my 4 year old enjoyed it.

Very good for preparing student before kindergarten but just a little to hard for pre k but i still use it i would recommend more for a kindergarten student
