Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment

Review

“A master of medicine, a healer of souls, an awakener of hearts, Rabbi Gabriel Cousens has freed up Torah to free up souls, flinging wide open her rusty gates to enable her wisdom to gush forth unabatedly and in fullness of intent and application. … He skillfully weaves the wisdom of the sages through the ages into a cohesive and fruitful brew of lessons that speak directly to the deepest depths of our spirits. … [His] treatise of the Torah raises the decibels of her voice so that all souls, regardless of their external identities, can hear her message and experience her magic.” —From the foreword by Rabbi Gershon Winkler   “Jews and Torah have a symbiotic relationship: the life of one depends on the life of the other. For far too long Torah has been on life support because the Jews have been on life support. Rabbi Gabriel Cousens is about to revive the latter by resuscitating the former. His Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment reveals a level of Torah wisdom that few contemporary Jews know exits, and when they do, there is hope that they will achieve the very enlightenment Rabbi Cousens and Torah promise them.” —Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Tanya, the Masterpiece of Hasidic Wisdom   “In my book Times for Redemption I point out how important it is for us to prepare the vessels to hold the spiritual energy needed for redemption. Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment is an inspired offering to help us prepare our vessels.” —Rabbi Matityahu Glazerson, author of Letters of Fire, Above the Zodiac, From Hinduism Back to Judaism, and Times for Redemption“Rebbe Gabriel Cousens’s deep and profound book is reopening a door to Judaism and Torah that has been closed in my heart for a long time. Through Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment I can now begin to understand the spiritual teachings of the Torah, how inspiring and beneficial they are for me as well as for the many Jewish members within our Sufi spiritual community. I appreciate the rebirth into the Jewish tradition within my heart and experience.” —Jason D. Groode, senior director of Sufis Hawaii“Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment is a fascinating gateway into some of the most profound mysteries of creation. Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, MD, attempts to unlock the gate to give us a taste of some of the sparks of the inner Torah through modern science and Kabbalah. Thirty years ago I saw a similar work on Bereisheet called Beginning and Upheaval written by Rabbi Meir Leibush Malbim and translated by physicist Dr. Zvi Faier, a close disciple of Rabbi Dr. Chiam Zimmerman, one the great rabbis of the last generation. After seeing that work I am not at all surprised by what Rabbi Cousens is doing here. This book should be used as an eye and mind opener and we should all value what King David asked: Open my eyes so I can see the wonders of your Torah. For us there is no greater wonder than to see the integration of wisdom and Torah rolled into one.” —Rabbi Moshe Schatz, author of Maayan Moshe, Tikun Lail Shavoout of the Rabbi Shalom Sharabi, Keter Malchut on Seferot H a’omer, and Sparks of the Hidden Light “For years, as a Jewish woman separated from my roots, I have been seeking the doorway to Enlightenment through Judaism. And here it is. Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, MD, has brought the life and soul back to one of the greatest spiritual paths in the world in a way that has dramatically and profoundly touched the essence of my soul. Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment is a God-inspired door opener into the great ancient teachings, a guide to help prepare people to receive the messianic energies of liberation that have been prophesized.” —Trudy Green, current manager of Aerosmith and previous manager of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Heart, and Perry Farrell

This is a book that is a step above the usual "how to" books. This books tells you how to use the technical skills you learned from other tutorials to tell a story, to stress the key points in the story that move the story forward. The author explains how this is done across all the various skills that take to make a film - scripting, directing, camera work, lighting editing, audio and even producing. Highly recomended. The author alos has tutorials on Lynda.com (also a good investment...)and that's how I discovered the book.

The most useful take-away from reading this book is an take on the science of moving your audience with story.

An excellent compendium of storytelling and editing motivations. I used this in a storytelling class with much success.

Norm Hollyn is one of the premiere instructors at America's most prestigious film school, USC's School of Cinematic Arts. This book distills about $5000 of professional instruction and lectures that anyone can read and have access too. A marvelous book for getting your mind around cinematic thinking, what works on the screen and why. Highly recommend.

Bit too much waffle and the messages are often hidden. A lot of value is lost if you are not i possession of the numerous 'example' movies reviewed.

I'm a fan of Norman Hollyn. I frequent his website, I love his recent collaboration with Larry Jordan on 2reelguys, but this book was very disappointing.I went to film school, it was kind of fun, but ultimately pointless and a waste of my parents money. THE LEAN FORWARD MOMENT is exactly that: kind of fun, but a waste because it will bore you with theory that is not practical. That's the definition of theory: abstract thought, speculation. It's not real world tested. Some of the information in the book is quite valuable, but Hollyn should have just made a blog post. You can really just sum up all the main points in one blog. A book out stays it's welcome.THE LEAN FORWARD MOMENT constantly refers to The Godfather. That's great. BUT. . .who still watches The Godfather? That's for freshmen film theory students and dinosaurs. So don't buy this book. You can get much better information from Hollyn's 2reelguys website. It covers the same topics, but it's much more engaging and gives you practical knowledge, not just theoretical.

Absolutely amazing book.

Very informative Book.Even we learned a lot from it.Norman did a superb job not togo into "nuts and bolts" of Editing.TwK.

The only thing that budding activist/misfit Jesse and perfectly polished student council member Emily have in common is how much they both enjoy kissing each other, every Tuesday afternoon in an out-of-the-way corner of the public library. No one knows about their weekly rendezvous and Emily plans on keeping it that way, despite Jesse's desire to be open about her feelings for Emily. When Emily manages to hook a corporate sponsorship for school events and a number of the student body protests--led by Jesse--the relationship between the girls becomes more about their differences than about the few things they share. The Difference Between You and Me is a thoughtful, funny, and memorable novel. The story alternates between the Jesse's and Emily's perspectives and although their romantic entanglement is what brings them together, it isn't the focal point of the book. With an excellent balance between humor and gravity, George explores how Jesse and Emily handle standing up and speaking out about their beliefs, how they each deal with conflict, and how far they are willing to go to be themselves. For the protagonists, their reactions to the conflict mirror how they view their sexuality and how much they each value their relationship with each other. George resists putting a label on any person or situation while posing an important question to readers: Is it harder to go with the flow and live with the consequences, or to stand up to stifling ideas and people, no matter the consequences? All of the characters are vibrant and multi-dimensional and the dialogue rings true, making for a smart, humorous, and important book that demands to be read in one sitting

The character voices are great, though you really only get to meet one character for one chapter and never have her point of view after that - so that's kind of pointless. Overall, a heartwarming story but the ending leaves much to be desired. It kind of just...ends. The description of the book implies some huge crossroads turmoil plot point, but it literally just ends, and you kind of sit there like "Oh...I guess that works." Not a bad book by any means and I'd definitely recommend it, but it wasn't great, either.

Finished this in one day, and hoped until the very end they’d end up together. It’s definitely for a high school audience, but was a beautiful love story still.

My daughter read this in school and wanted to have her own copy to reread. She loved it

Good book for younger teens but don't expect too much if you're 16+

I really, really enjoyed this thoughtful, empathetically written coming of age story. Especially loved Jesse's voice.

This is a great coming of age/gay story. I'd say it's best for high schoolers, and for the reading level that's true, but it's also a warm heart pulling story that teaches great lessons for all ages.

Bought this book after reading a glowing review by Malinda Lo but I was underwhelmed by it. I felt that the story didn't fully unfold. It was just okay.

#109,450 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was more interested in the secondary romance. The heroine was a lot nicer than Sage. I wanted this book so much, waiting for it to be at a good price, and really wanted to read Roak's story. The story itself was written very nicely, but not the characters.Roak deserved someone better than her. Sage was just mean and selfish. I wanted to like her, because I liked her in the previous book. But she was so rude here! I couldn't believe how different she acted. She kept referring to Roak as a "kid", and it annoyed to me to no end, simply because he was 3 years younger than her. He certainly acted a lot more mature than her.Bonnie was a great character, and I wish there could have been a whole book for her romance. She was real, respectful, selfless, and not stuck-up.Also, the ending for this was crappy, like some of the reviewers said. They reunited in less than a page.

This author never disappoints with her western series. I only happened upon this author in the past year and I cannot get enough of her books. Luckily, she has written several. I have enjoyed them all.

I could not wait to read this book. I knew Sage's story would be filled with her wanting her way and fighting with Drum, but I think it went a little over board in that area. She fought with him over everything. And I was tired of her constantly seeing him as a kid the first half of the book. I did enjoy the book and if you have read the others you will want to read this as well. It's a great addition to the series. When Sage finally see's Drum for who he really is, the book starts geting better and better. All in all it was kind of a slow start but is very interesting and ends good. Bonnie and Brad were a nice addition to the book. Texas princess was my favorite, and I was disappointed Tobin was the only brother not in this book. But it was nice to visit Whispering Mountain again, and even hear from Martha:)

If you read Jodi Thomas's books. Read the whole series they are wonderful. You fall in love with her caharacters and don't want to leave them hanging.

This time Safe and Drummond were the story and like in the other books there was lots of excitement, killing, kidnapping a slimy saloon owner, this is a great story.

I got this book and many others by Jodi Thomas; but all of her books are no longer available in print. Have to either get them for kindle or buy them used. Wish I could find one store where I can buy them all in one place! Much prefer that Amazon can sell them besides the kindle version. This and all the books I was able to order arrived quickly and are in great shape! My wife is very excited about this author!

I agree with the one reviewer that gave the book 2 stars. Sage runs hot & cold with a touch of spoiled brat; actually I think Drum could have done better than give his heart to someone so childish. Nurse Bonnie Faye Pierce & Brad Summerfield was the true love story in this book. They were 2 people who had never had much and through adversity and unlikely circumstances came together with a sweet story. I loved the other Whispering Mountain books and this was good also but when Drum risked his life to save Sage from the count and all she did was berate him I thought what an ass; my opinion didn't improve as the story progressed. Teagen should have tanned her hide when she was a kid. I felt for her when she lost Michael Saddler the Ranger she loved but was killed in book 2 that was so sad and how she cared for him. But for this she went away to medical school in Boston and endured the rigors of being a woman in the 1850s wanting to be a doctor, she didn't show much maturity in her dealing with Drum. diamondgirl
