I tend to automatically download any book that is about time travel and is free so I am used to the quality being hit or miss. After reading the first 10% or so I was afraid that this would be another miss but since I love time travel anything so much I decided to stick it out and I am glad that I did.The story does not get to the point, there is a lot of intro and development and some jumping around that you have to get through before it gets good. Once we hit the climax, all of the initial boring stuff is worth it. I was amazed at how quickly the author wrapped everything up given how long it took to lay everything out, I was truly expecting a big cliffhanger when I saw how close to the end I was and how much was still to be seen but I am glad that I wasn't left hanging.
Most time travel books seem to be leisurely, allowing the protagonists to explore part of their old lives, or sample the forbidden future, or tour a life totally in a different era other than their own. Not this one! It reads like a spy thriller, particularly near the end. In what amounted to be a good sign of the book's appeal, I found myself wanting to push forward and read some more, so I can discover what happened.The super ability of Sam's was fascinating and I imagined what I would do if I had his ability. He was like his own time machine! The author was also wise to put some limits on this super ability, so that he had to scheme or rely upon others to pick up this ability. This shows the main character's resourcefulness.The only drawbacks I could think of (but those did not distract from my enjoyment of the book overall) were; a) some jarring moments where I would have to re-read and figure out what had happened (I do realize time travel novels can get quite complex easily; this is a fun read however) and b) the violence imposed on loved ones at the very end seemed a bit out of proportion to the level I grew accustomed to throughout the book (but without giving away the ending I can state that the author managed to pull it off such that I forgave him easily).One landmark of a good thriller is a villain I could easily boo and hiss. That was fulfilled in spades by the antagonist, Dr. Lara MacHayden, who had so many self-imposed positive attributes that I could fear her (and not snicker at her like other cartoon villains in other stories). She is also steeled to her mission, without one iota of hesitation.There are many moments when the book is like magic, the plot just soaring to new heights. Highly recommended.
Here's another book that kept me awake into the night. I am a big fan of the time travel concept and wishfully read any story that has that kind of action. Lately, I have become enthralled with the Thriller genre. This story felt like that to me. I enjoyed the characters and at times wanted to go up to them and tell them what I thought about their behavior. I guess I really got into the story and became a part of the progression as it unfolded. I think this is the highest praise I can give a writer to tell them I felt as if I was a part of the events. You might assume that talking to a book's characters saying things like, "Now why did you do that? Can't you see what's going to happen to you if you do that?" No, I am not crazy or even eccentric. What I am is a writer myself and I really appreciate an author who is able to evoke such a reaction from me. I tend to attempt to analyze the process and admire it as both a reader and a writer. I sincerely recommend this novel The Pages of Time. I am sure most readers would enjoy it.I plan to read the next book in this series and already have it standing by to begin as soon as I finish my comments here.
I really liked this book and am waiting for the next one!!! The explination for the ability of time travel was so well constructed it was believable. I think that the characters were written deep enough for the storyline. This is, after all, a science fiction/fantasy and not a heavy duty novel. The whole idea was great fun and describing it like the pages in a book was spot on making it almost realistic. Sam was someone I liked. I think Chrissie got almost too good as things progressed. Nobody changes that much, do they? But she at least became likable. Loved the characters that he slipped in and then "lost" them until the very end: Michael and Isaac. The end was good as it definitley wrapped the story up but also left room for the next book which I will be reading.
I love time travel stories. This one is based on a drug that was discovered back in the 60s in San Francisco. The drug causes the brain to perceive time differently allowing the user to review past and future events. But can the drug be controlled? And who wants to control it? The author weaves an interesting plot, though the climax gets a bit too violent for my tastes. I was hoping for a more clever end game instead of a swallow the pill and save the world scenario. The romantic part seemed to get lost in this story. Some might feel cheated.
I think it's a credit to the author's character development to say that all of the main characters appeared vulnerable and the villains made me angry for the way they were treating the main character. It's an exciting story that challenges thoughts about time and alternative realities.
Time travel. Beginning to think real life is like that. Technology is moving fast. Too fast for a senior citizen's mind to fully grasp. I am becoming spoiled for life as I have always known it.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Pates of Time:A Time Travel Thriller. Time travel has been fascinating people for eons and the concept in this book is a little different to the usual and and added a lot of drama. The plot was interesting and sinister in the 'mad' scientist Dr Lara McHayden. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
