These things are only as good as your willingness to stay with the program. I don't have that much will power, but it is good information to have and use.

Despite the 230+ page format, author and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Harvey B. Simon's premise in "The No Sweat Exercise Plan: Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Live Longer" takes a page out of lifetime exercise guru Jack LaLanne's recipe for a healthy and long life. The idea, so simple that it really isn't necessary to spend $21.95 on the book, can be summed up albeit it gratuitously with the catch phrase, "Keep on Truckin'" So sorry, Harvey.Okay. Now you might have the inclination to want to `read all about it' and Dr. Simon does provide a semi-interesting format immersed in enough medical no-how to satisfy all those out there who have a need for those special credentials that validate information as `expert testimony.' Keep in mind that Simon as a medical doctor demands the requisite tests that the medical community deems `preventative medicine' and he elaborately explains the dangers of certain body signals like BMI, hypertension, high cholesterol, HDL levels etc. to help the reader to understand just how exercise as a panacean solution in general helps to slow the aging process. Mainly, Simon debunks the need for heavy-duty sweat-inducing aerobics and prescribes a European lifestyle without the saturated high fat cheeses, (although he uses strictly American examples) of moving about rather than relying on the couch potato contrivances and conveniences of modern life.Simply said, Simon advocates four types of exercise where what he calls CME---cardo-metabolic exercise---wins as hands down most important. Using an elaborate point system he rates any exercise that elevates your heart rate and stokes up your metabolism, suggesting that around 1000 points a week should maintain good health for those without special needs. He sites 2000 points a week for those who may seriously want to lose weight. Typically, one would receive 200 points for jogging at the rate of 12 minutes per mile for 30 minutes as opposed to 165 points for 30 minutes of golfing while carrying your own clubs. Whether or not you sweat or not, Simon says is not the issue. Moving around (walking) for sustained periods of time on a daily basis remains paramount to insure good health. In his No Sweat Basic Pyramid, Dr, S suggests that good eating with an eye on nutrition provides the fuel the body needs to sustain itself---here the standard approach of watching calories in a 15% protein - 25% to 35% fat - 50% to 60% carbohydrate breakdown, avoiding sugars, trans-fats and processed foods maintains optimal vitamin and mineral intake. Following a substantial CME block on the pyramid, the three other types of exercise gain the spotlight, beginning with strength training as a separate component then a shared block of flexibility and balance training. Simon details all four types of exercise with actual diagrammed routines, establishing what he preaches as an undeniable "no brainer." Anyone who has been keeping active for years already knows what it takes the bulk of the book to say. I repeat, `just keep moving----use weight bearing exercise to keep up your muscle mass, stretching to keep your body limber and balance to prevent falling.At the pinnacle of the No Sweat pyramid, Simon places preventative medicine and hoists a flag atop to alert one to the perils of too much stress in modern life. No real new news here, however Simon does take out the time to help you construct a `my-pyramid' of your own to help you realize your personal health goal and spends a few extra chapters explaining some of the common complaints people may initially have about adding a daily exercise regime to their life. For those who have perspired routinely in gyms and in the outdoors for over the last 25 years, he lists the types of sweaty exercise machines one can utilize to maximize the burn.Bottom line: if your thing is to read about what you already know and have heard about for years, check this tome out of the library and get down and dirty with expert medical information about the whys and wherewithal-s pertaining to what you are already doing to maintain your health. If you haven't started yet - shame on you---this book can provide some grist for your exercise mill and set you on the right path for the future. With that in mind, I can only recommend this book to those who have been living under a rock for the last 30+ years----everyone else need not spend the going rate to vindicate their own common sense.

I read about half of this book and there is nothing new in it. It is very outdated and mainly states that any exercise is good.

I bought this book on a whim after hearing about it on the radio or someplace. I'm not even sure.

Why do I consider this work to contain the best exercise- advice at all? The answer is because the advice it gives does not require 'exercising' as a special block of time taken in a gym, or with some special instrument. It thinks of exercise as a possible extension of everyday life- activity. We can do much exercise simply by increasing the pace at which we walk, or by lifting a few cans in the proper way each day for a few minutes. Whether we are gardening, housecleaning, shopping, mowing the lawn, climbing stairs, washing the car, playing with children , we can benefit physically by increasing the level of our activity. We can no matter, it seems , where we are, and almost in whatever we are doing, find a way to excercise a bit more, to get ourselves moving physically in a better way. And these little bits of motion are not insignificant but can add up to better health.As Judy Siegel writes in the 'Jerusalem Post' "The latest scientific studies shows conclusively that people can get the full health benefits of exercise with only slight modifications to their daily routines."Simon also in this work provides a more thorough analysis of different kinds of exercise, and specific steps for improving functioning of different areas of the body.This work would seem to have something for everyone who cares about improving their health.Most highly recommended.

Why am I writing this review? Because I felt it would be a disservice to anyone out there who was looking for a great exercise plan if I didn't rave out Dr. Simon's book. I felt compelled to let everyone know about this wonderful book that has changed my life. I was ecstatic when a close friend told me about Dr. Simon's book. I had no idea that such a book existed and I was anxious to get my hands on it. Somehow, with two children, I found the time to read the book. With two very young children, I had absolutely no time to go to the gym. I was feeling sluggish and even guilty for not exercising. After reading his book, I realized there were so many other options I was not aware of. Dr. Simon's book opened my eyes to a whole world of fitness programs that would be most beneficial to my health and well being. I learned about MY body and MY personal health needs and was able to create an exercise plan that fit into my schedule. I have even involved my four year old in some of my activities. I want to suggest to everyone to check out the section on stretching. I can't go a day without doing each and every one one of Dr. Simon's ten basic stretching exercises. They leave me feeling rejuvenated and flexible! They are simple and quick, yet highly effective.I also have a better understanding of proper nutrition and what diet works best for me. I have made some serious changes to my eating habits, thanks to Dr. Simon. I follow the TLC diet and can say that it has made a huge difference in how I feel. I am a healthier person now and will continue to be for years and years. My life has taken a turn for the better since reading this book!!

Welcome to your world is an intriguing book which explores how the environment we build around us affects us, as well as how we navigate that reality. What IÂ find really fascinating is how the author integrates cognitive and bodily experiences into the book so that we're not just looking at the environment, but also our own place in space. If you want to understand space, building designs, or how you navigate the world around this is an excellent book to read because it provides you a way to look at your environment from a unique perspective and consider how you situate yourself in the world around you as well as how bring good design into your life and improve your circumstances as a result.

Really compelling overview of the ways our homes and urban settings are affecting us. What I found most interesting is the author's ability to tackle this topic from so many different angles: cognitive psychology, neuroscience, real estate, urban planning, politics, and architecture. It's a great introductory book, if you're interested in the topic of how poor public planning is affecting our lives. I suggest reading it after "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs. Goldhagen's book doesn't give an answer to the problem. Rather, she provides an extremely brilliant and thoughtful rewording of the original question. We still have lots of work to do.

Words have finally been put to everything that we always knew but couldn’t quite articulate. Many “ah ha” moments and “well of course we can do better” realizations lace easily comprehensible reviews of cities, buildings, and architects who do it right by reconnecting humans with nature.

Welcome To Your World is an excellent study in the environment around us - how it effects us, how it shapes our feelings, how it impacts our wellbeing. You don't have to be an architect, designer or builder to understand the incredibly interesting examples that Mrs. Goldhagen clearly illustrates (often with fantastic pictures). She dives deep into both well and poorly designed environments, both uniquely interesting in how they positively and negatively impact everything from feelings to energy to recovery time in sick patients. A very interesting and informative read!

Well written with great explanations of design and functionality. I wish I had of read this book prior to employing an architect on my latest project. It obviously is worthwhile to seek out the best and ensure they have the capability to deliver what Sarah Williams Goldhagen suggests.

This brilliant book opened my eyes to the world around me and helped me see my environment in new ways. Goldhagen is advocating for better design, design that is more human-centric and connects us to nature. She's a former professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design and a well-known architecture critic, and she has spent her entire life trying to understand the process by which the built environment affects us emotionally and psychologically. Here she is writing for a general audience, and sharing what she has learned during a lifetime of interdisciplinary exploration with people like me, who do not have a background in art or design or architecture, but who are curious to learn about how our surroundings affect our lives. Imagine the treat of being able to go on a tour of the world with a guide who is so smart, insightful, entertaining, witty, deeply informed, and passionate about her subject. For what it's worth, this is also a beautifully produced book with gorgeous illustrations. It's a book I will save and treasure, and go back to again and again. I wish I could give it more stars.

I had high expectations about this book because it was mentioned in an extremely interesting article about architecture in The New Yorker.I found it boring, very vague and abstract, almost spiritual. I hate using that word but I had the impression I was reading a book about self help instead of a book about architecture.I was expecting something more focused on architecture and full of examples, I got a book about neuropsychology and cognitive science instead.

The narrative is very fluid and I like the way the author swings between (i) the history of financial markets in 70/80’s, (ii) the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers and (iii) his own personal experiences inside the firm. The amplitude of the themes changes a lot, from broad to narrower topics, but the author manages to crisscross between them while holding the links and maintaining the flow. Besides, it is interesting to see how transparently the author shows that some prejudices people have about banks and financial markets professionals were intensely true. The book made me wonder how it may have been to live in such a unique work place and to regularly sleep and dine at places perhaps as impressive as some salaries mentioned: Le Périgord, Bristol, Tante Claire, Plaza Athenée, Claridge's, everything charged to the firm’s expense account. As the book mentions, some traders viewed the expense account as a soft-dollar compensation system.

Michael Lewis wrote this, his first book, in 1989. I was thirteen years old when it was released - it was one of the rare nonfiction books that received enough fanfare and furor that it penetrated my world. I didn't read it, of course, but I was aware of it because it was talked about on a variety of TV shows and news broadcasts.I didn't read a Lewis book until Moneyball, but after that I was hooked and gobbled up The Big Short, Flashboys and the Undoing Project. After finishing his book on those Israeli psychologists, I picked up Boomerang, The Losers, The New New Thing and now Liar's Poker. Despite enjoying all of the aforementioned books (The Losers is a dream for people that follow politics), I was hesitant about Liar's Poker because I figured it was a dated book about Wall Street in the 1980s.I am pleased to say that my concerns turned out to be unjustified. After graduating from the London School of Economics, Lewis fell into a job at Salomon Brothers (it was eventually absorbed into Citigroup). His first few months were spent with 120+ other young professionals with newly minted premium degrees (lots of Harvard and Stanford MBAs) in the Salomon Brothers highly regarded training course (an indoctrination series, really).A few chapters covers the training course and the various professionals they were exposed to, as well as a history of both Salomon Brothers and the bond market. Lewis goes to work in the London office, where he was moved from a lowly trainee to a lowly geek. He learns at the heels of two extremely gifted salesmen and within six months, after completing a major trade, grows from a geek to a BSD (read the book).Lewis was sitting next to the CEO of Salomon Brothers on the day of the Black Monday Crash and provides us with the helpless reactions of the traders on the floor, as well as the calculating response of his two mentors. Less than a year after the crash, Lewis left Wall Street because the belief in the value of money and those who made it had been shattered (he also acknowledges that he made enough to be comfortable and obviously wanted to write a book).The housing collapse and stock market crash of 07-08 had it's roots in the 1980s scenes where Lewis describes the unscrupulous taking advantage of customers and the belief by the Street that the government would always bail them out. 28 years after it was first published, the book is still relevant and quite entertaining.

Michael Lewis has an uncanny ability to take a subject----any subject----even one as typically "mundane" and boring as the financial world, and somehow bringing it to life in such a way that the reader is riveted from start to finish. I first read this book when it was new and was utterly astounded by his humor and ability to explain even the most convoluted economic concepts and turn them into "page turning" reading. I have since read/purchased all of his books, as well as having read his articles in Vanity Fair, and have yet to be disappointed. Whether he is entering the world of Silicon Valley's techie boom, NFL football, or the economic crisis in the Euro Zone he never fails to deliver a brilliantly written, absorbing, and somehow humorous take on his subject. I am certain that there is no topic which he cannot investigate and write about in the most entertaining yet informative way. This is a replacement copy of my original book which has been lost in our library's cosmos, but it is one that I simply must own. Long before Leo's "Wolf of Wall Street" or Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" portrayal, there was Michael Lewis' spot-on depiction of the crazy 80's Wall Street boom and its excess. I really can't speak highly enough of Mr. Lewis' talent and writing ability.

I am a huge Michael Lewis fan and this was the one book of his that I had not read. The book, in my opinion, is by far his weakest one - which is understandable as I believe this is one of his earlier works. The book follows his short career at Saloman Brothers in the 1980's. It is interesting to see inside of a Wall Street firm at that time and to see the ethics (or lack thereof) - only on Wall Street is it acceptable to use your "customers" as a place to offload junk product that you do not want to keep for yourself. The book is really a timeline of his employment at Salmon Brothers and, unlike his other books, really lacks any other central theme to hold it together. It is mildly entertaining, but if this had been the first book of his I read, I would have missed out reading all his other fantastic books.

Lewis is prolific and entertaining. I have read only half of the books he has written but someday I will have read them all - he's that good. This book describes his early days, just out of college, as an investment banker. The locker room language may be a bit coarse for some readers; this book was not on my church's book club list. It is funny, probably 97% true and mainly a good read. The mammoth-sized egos which are depicted are similar to what I have seen in many sales environments and the military where everything seems and may even be, bigger than life.On more than one occasion, I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard, wondering, "Did he really say that?! Wow! Are there really people like that?!" My early life in Manhattan, right after college was an adventure, but a mild one compared to the stories in this book.
