#441,603 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just came from my second taking of the 70-462 exam. This time I passed it with a score of 788. A month ago I failed it with a score of 678. (700 is passing) So at 50 questions each, I have 100 questions fresh in my mind as I write this. This book certainly has good info in it and it mostly covers every subject I saw on the exam with the exception of a couple of Azure questions. So, why not 4 or 5 stars? For 1 thing, the exam tips sprinkled throughout the book were worthless. I made a point of knowing all the material behind every exam tip thinking that would cover me for maybe 3 or 4 questions and after each test I went back though this book and other than the few "generic" tips, the specific ones were not on either of my tests.Probably the biggest thing that annoyed me about this book was that I bought it after watching a youtube video by one of the authors boB Taylor from a Teched conference where he spends 90 minutes going over exam prep material for this exam. In that talk he pitched this book and made all kinds of erroneous statements about what would be on the test.Things like:All potential answers must be valid solutions. No made up syntax/options allowed. FALSEVery few of the "Choose all that apply" type questions. FALSE I think I had about a dozen on each test.Maybe 1 question on Mirroring since it's being replaced by AG's. FALSE Probably 5 or 6 questions on each exam. The format of the exam was not what he talked about either.Sitting for the exam the first time it really threw me off to see all these things (and a few more) that Mr. Expert insisted wouldn't be part of the exam.Overall, this book will help but for me it wasn't enough to pass the exam.I also used a CBT Nuggets subscription to study for this. I'd recommend that over this book by far.

This book is a great start to preparing for exam 70-462. You get a DVD with practice questions and practice exams, and you also get a voucher that take 15% off the price of the exam registration fee. The book is not big and not too small. It has good detail about each topic, and also has good walkthroughs that you can (and should) practice on a test machine. However, it is VERY important that you also review the MSDN links that are provided in every section of every chapter. If you rely solely on the book for your preparation, you will not have the full details about the subject matter. Microsoft exams are notorious for having questions on obscure little details that you might not encounter in your everyday work with the tested software. In addition, as the book points out, the exams will be updated as service packs and hot fixes are released. The only way to get the updated information is to go out on the web and review MSDN and other sites. My only criticism of this book, and it's a criticism of many exam guides, is that the review questions aren't detailed enough. If Microsoft is going to test us on obscure details, then their review questions should be detailed as well. I've found I have to write my own review questions to be assured of having a sufficient level of knowledge to pass the exam. I shouldn't have to do that, since that's the whole point of buying an exam guide.Other than that, it's a good book and worth the price of purchase.

Not a recommended purchase! Frankly, while this book does have a lot of information contained within, it's too poorly written, organized, and presented to be of any really help on the test. What is worse is that it is absolutely of no use beyond the test - while the 70-461 and 70-463 Trainging Kits provide some methodology guidance, and real world examples of implementing their content, this book is nothing more than a jumble of MSDN links, and screenshots. What it does well: Covered everything I saw on the exam. I thought this was the easiest of three MCSA tests - there were instances where only one of the options provided was even remotely possible. So in many ways, the very basic introduction this book gives to the topics is enough to get you through the test.Where it fails (deep breath): As mentioned, the book is a hodgepodge of screenshots, step by step guides, and actual feature descriptions. Admittedly for some this may be great - I prefer to read about the features, then use them. The book briefly defines a feature, then step by step, where to click to accomplish the task.Next, the screenshots are screenshots - there's no attempt to edit or enhance them. There are no notes, no highlighted, circled, or zoomed areas. They seem to assume you're following along on your own SQL instance... which has the same screens they print in low res all over the place.Information is repeated constantly. A chapter starts with an overview of features, then repeats the same information a couple pages later, hardly reworded. Rarely is any concept expanded upon, never do you get a recommendation on when something is worthwhile or when it's helpful. The new SQL 2012 Extended Events got a paragraph. One paragraph.**Worst** Terminology isn't consistent, and information is contradictory:Pg. 358 "If you need more than one listener for an availability group, it is possible to create additional listeners by using Windows PowerShell or the Failover Cluster Manager console."Pg.364 (Lesson Summary) "You can have only one listener per availability group."You get better explanations, and graphics that are actually helpful (not snipping tool) with the MSDN documentation (diagrams! imagine that, a depiction of the architecture of an availability group).Recommendation: If you want to actually learn anything then skip this book and read the MSDN docs. If you have experience with prior versions, you have to read less of the MSDN docs.Just check the test page - it lists what is tested, and what percentage of the test it constitutes. If you really have no experience, I'm concerned about the book's accuracy, but it does give you a wealth of walk through exercises and guides. It does do that! But again, you'll have to go else where to find out *why* you'd go through that list of steps.Final note! Search for Hyper-V disk differencing and save time and tens of gigs of HDD space when setting up the practice environment (yea they don't cover that either).

This is one of the finest books i have read in Security. It gives details on some of the best security principles every major industries must follow to achieve data protection and user authentication/authorization for their web applications. I am a security professional so I could finish this book in a few days but for a first timer or new to the world of security this will be a great book to get an idea on how things work in enterprises.

Book goes thru various security concepts, history and approaches, has javaScript/Node.JS/NPM code for reference. If your looking for a good detailed overview of web security for web development, then this is the boo for you.

Not what I expected. The book is more of an example for implementing OAuth and OpenID Connect with Node and Express. If you are looking for an in-depth explanation of OAuth or OpenId, then this is the wrong book. The book starts with a very high level overview of security concepts. This is rather basic, and most of it I already knew (and I am not a security expert). Then it has a closer look at OAuth and OpenID Connect. But the explanation is just 5 pages, and one page is a diagram. The diagram is worse than the one you find in Wikipedia (there should be 3 actors). The rest is mostly code (which I was not interested in).At that point I stopped reading, as it wasn't what I was looking for.

Everyone who found "No Way Down" interesting should also read "One Mountain Thousand Summits " by Freddie Wilkinson for further insight into the events at K2 in August 2008 . While Graham Bowley's "No Way Down" contains a very helpful chronology and is an admirable attempt at presenting a balanced view of the participants ,his obvious ignorance of climbing simply hampered his ability to tell the whole story . Freddie Wilkinson is an experienced climber and because of that is much more able to understand and communicate the signifcance of the events and how Himalayan climbing has evolved to the point that a disaster like K2 in August 2008 could happen in the first place . That is why Jon Krakauer in "Into Thin Air" was able to interest the non-climbing public in a way non-climbing authors couldn't . I'm glad I read Mr. Bowley's book first but found that it left too many unanswered questions about too many things .

Books about climbing on the highest mountains are most often "as told to" accounts. Since mountaineers tend to be athletes of limited education and literary talent, their accounts are written by ghost writers who describe the events from the perspective of the climber, defending his (or her) actions, or lack of them, on the mountain. No Way Down is different in that the author was not an actor in the debacle that took place on K2 in 2008, in which eleven climbers died and several others suffered injuries. A New York Times reporter, his account is based on multiple interviews with participants, their friends and families. Thus, while not an an actual witness to the events, his story presents a fuller, better balanced and more objective view of what happened than could be learned from a single actor in the drama. Even so, he has a difficult time sorting matters out when confronted with the self justifying or self glorifying, but conflicting, versions of events related by participants and their supporters. Although climbing at high altitudes is often portrayed in romantic terms, everyone knows - or should know - by now that the reality is far from glamorous. The adventurers who seek out the highest mountains are a diverse group, but seem to contain a high proportion of drifters, layabouts and self promoters without solid professional careers. Much has been written about what motivates individuals to undertake the dangers and discomforts of climbing. Motivations undoubtedly vary widely, but ego, narcissism and craving for attention and glory certainly play a heavy part. The actual material costs are high, but the human costs are higher still. Those who fail to return leave sadly broken families behind. Those who return with severe frost bight, amputations or other such common climbing injuries bring home other forms of trauma. All of this is done in pursuit of what? To anyone not obsessed with climbing, the objective seems at once selfish and devoid of anything that could be considered even remotely useful or productive.

Usually, being outdoors is more fun than reading about being outdoors. The exception, for me, is when it comes to climbing mountains. With an Ice Axe. Dependent upon canned oxygen. At minus-twenty Fahrenheit. These experiences are best read about with book in hand, fire burning in a wood stove, labradors sleeping at my feet, a single malt in a glass on the table by the Lazyboy. No Way Down is written by a New York Times journalist. Graham Bowley (the author) is not a mountaineer. As such, this book does have a pedantic style to it. It plods along, objectively describing the details. At times, it seems wooden, much like the journalist was just trying to put his notes down on paper without much livening up of the text. Not that it is a bad book; it isn't.What it lacks is the ability to convey the passion of being on a mountain. It doesn't fully explain why anyone would do such an adventure (although it is clear that for one of the mountaineers, it is the money that motivates). The author is tactful in his descriptions though. Books like these can have a "watch the car accident" feel to them. This one doesn't. It is classy. Highly respectful to the eleven people who perished on K2 back in August of 2008.But compare this book to Jack Turner---who not only climbs mountains but also talks about conserving mountains. "Teewinot" and "The Abstract Wild" are both descriptive and profound. Far superior to what a NYT journalist can do to the subject matter. The feeling the book gave me was that here's this NYT journalist who comes across a story. He gets some attention from the story---so, well, of course, we must turn it into a book! And it is a fine book---just that it reads like so many other journalistic snap shots from people who aren't in love with the whole topic. Or the experience. The book feels like something that had to be written because it would look good on a resume'. And as such, it reads much like that.Yet, I am touched by the author's reporting of the lives of the good people who perished, and survived, that tragic unlucky trip up K2. I just wanted more than biography and story. I wanted that feeling you get when you read a story written by a man who loves the subject matter. Not just reporting what happened on that awful August day in 2008.

The Eloise Wilkin Treasury: Favorite Nursery Rhymes, Prayers, Poems, and Stories

From Publishers Weekly

Since 1927, Wilkin's books have been enormously popular with parents and children, primarily because of her inimitable pictures. She is hard to beat at evoking a response to the young boys and girls, flowers and wild animals, that she captures in color and essence. Here are choices from Wilkin's earlier books: nursery rhymes, prayers, poems and stories. One section features babies from different ethnic backgrounds, alike in their "specialness." They are cuddly and little; they enjoy splashing in a tub, shaking a rattle, "Peek-a-Boo," brothers and sisters to play with. The short stories include a dandy about Georgie. His wish for a grandfather is granted when he finds a good friend who yearns for a grandson. Rounding out the collection are poems by Shelley, Christina Rossetti, Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Blake et al., plus the words and music to "Kumbaya," an African hymn. I ordered three books by Eloise Wilkins because my son had so loved one of her books 30 years ago and I remember being melted by the pictures. Opening the first, I was startled as it seemed ALL the people in illustrations are of European descent, and I had planned on including the books with shower gifts -- and the first mother-to-be was of a darker ethnicity. Looking at this particular one again, it seems to have tried, with limited success, to incorporate non-'Europeans' in illustrations. I love the combining of nursery rhymes, poems, prayers and stories and expect the family I give the book to will have hours and hours of enjoyment from their favorites. I am especially delighted with the very last selection, from "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner": "He prayeth well / Who loveth well, / Both man and bird and beast. / He prayeth best who loveth best / All things both great and small; / For the dear God Who loveth us, / He made and loveth all." This is a message I think children cannot hear too many times.

so cute but was disappointed that they stuck inside a newer more modern story which did not belong in this traditional book. I guess the liberals couldn't handle the old fashioned stories and had to put in their little propaganda.

Wonderful book. The most beautiful illustrations of children.

My parents used to read this to me every night before bed, and it quickly became one of my all time favorites. The stories are well illustrated and simple for young children to understand. I was happy to find it online here on amazon as, now, I can read the stories to my children. They love it, of course, they're always more drawn to the older classics ;-)

brought back memories of my childhood. thank you

I had the My Good Night Book as a child and it was one of my favorites. I searched for it today in a used book store for my newborn daughter but couldn't find it. However I did find this book and I am thrilled to have it. The illustrations are precious and the stories are so cute. I hope it will become one of her favorites. Already she was enthralled by the illustrations at only 8 weeks old.

I bought this book years ago when I was single because I am an artist and loved the children's illustrations. It is a beautiful book filled with beautiful and colorful illustrations on every page that coincides with each of the poems and short stories within. I am now married and have a little girl and this book is currently part of her library. I hope she will treasure it as much as I still do.
