I love the Eyewitness Travel Guides and the one on Naples & Amalfi coast is great! I like the way the guide is divided, easy to read and follow.Very visual and for me this is perfect. I can see exactly where a museum or tourist place is on the street map. Also the high points are given more space and what to be aware of so not to miss.

When we travel, I use DK travel guides exclusively. They are always accurate and helpful.

Very useful guide. Not as fun to read as Lonely Planet but the maps are VERY good. In fact, the pullout map of the whole city was the best map we could find,

Well laid out book with mix of information and photos to see what you might enjoy.

Love all Eyewitness travel guides

Great tool for travel planning.

Colorful pictures and detailed information that a novice traveler would appreciate.

I'm on my way there this fall

The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela: Through Three Continents in the Twelfth Century, by Uri Shulevitz

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 4-8–Benjamin, a Spanish Jew, left his native town of Tudela in 1159 to embark on a 14-year journey across the Middle East. His Book of Travels, written in Hebrew, recounts his grueling, often-dangerous journey through what is modern-day France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Egypt. Encounters with warring Crusaders and Muslims, rapacious pirates, and bandits added to his hardships. Shulevitz re-creates this epic journey in a picture book of epic proportions, adapting Benjamin's account into a detailed, first-person narrative, accompanied by large, ambitious illustrations that evoke the landscapes, people, architecture, and history of the places that Benjamin saw. Darker, freer, and more impressionistic than Shulevitz's familiar work, the art is often indebted to medieval manuscript painting and Persian miniatures. Meticulously researched, with a long bibliography, lengthy author's note, and brief insets containing information that complements Benjamin's descriptions, this oversize picture book is obviously a labor of love. Wherever he went, Benjamin visited Jewish communities. Shulevitz's retelling stands as a testimony to the history, wisdom, and fortitude of those medieval Jews living precariously under Christian or Muslim rule. Both art and text will help readers imagine life during that time and, perhaps, provide a context for the contemporary turmoil in the lands Benjamin visited so long ago.–Margaret A. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 4-7. At first blush, the story of a bona fide twelfth-century Jewish wanderer might not seem the stuff of picture books, even for older readers. But this is so uniquely rendered that it proves, along with other recently published titles, that outstanding execution can draw readers to almost any subject. This fictional account follows Benjamin on a 14-year trip, which takes him from his home in Spain to historic cities of the ancient world: Rome, Babylon, Baghdad, and Jerusalem, among others. Illness, hunger, thirst, thieves, and assassins plague the journey. Yet there are also wonderful adventures, mystical stories, and fabulous sights, such as the pyramids. Told in an expansive first-person narrative, the book is filled with a bazaar's worth of detail, with unobtrusive sidebars explaining text references. In an extensive author's note, Shulevitz discusses how, beginning with Benjamin's actual diary in the original Hebrew, he faced the task of making the mostly factual reporting appealing by adding incidents found in other books. An extensive bibliography lists his sources, but, unfortunately, there are no specifics about the experiences he took from them. It's no surprise that Shulevitz, a Caldecott winner, provides splendid illustrations, but he outdoes himself here. The richly painted scenes, which vary in style and color according to their location, are highlighted by collage accents. Together with the evocative text, they capture the sweep of mysterious and faraway places. For other stories of intrepid travelers, see the adjacent Read-alikes column. Introducing primary aged children to history is essential. A well-designed picture book is one method worth pursuing. Anyone seeking information about medieval life should read The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela: Through Three Continents in the Twelfth Century (Douglas & McIntyre Publishing Group, 2005). This book is written by award-winning author and illustrator, Uri Shulevitz. It is a fictionalized first-person account of Tudela’s 14-year journey.Twenty-first century children are accustomed to a wide array of modern conveniences. Being able to imagine the primitive lifestyle of the Middle Ages is enhanced by the reading of first-hand accounts. Unfortunately, few pertinent documents have survived. Benjamin’s Hebrew account is among the most famous. Benjamin introduced his contemporaries to some places that were previously unknown while maintaining a nonchalant voice. These original writings are usually reserved for historians and adult history buffs.Using extensive research funded by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Uri combined many of the factual elements of Benjamin’s Hebrew writings with a fictionalized voice. Benjamin’s words and thoughts allow modern readers to visualize the perils of traveling during this turbulent time while learning about many historical events.Modern day adventurers have the luxury of traveling by plane, modern railroad systems, and via luxury cruise ships. Benjamin’s bare bones land treks were accomplished by traveling by foot and in wagons. Sea travel was faster, but limited to rudimentary barges and small boats. Pirates, diseases, and inclement weather were major concerns. In the beginning of the book, Uri provides a map of Benjamin’s travels. This illustration reveals Benjamin’s amazing accomplishments. He left his home in Spain and bravely explored Rome, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Baghdad, Persia, China, and Egypt before he made his way back to Tudela, Spain.Uri skillfully added many facts that provided a colorful and thought provoking overview of medieval life. He simultaneously put different events and places into historical perspective. Readers young and old will be inspired to want to learn more about the interactions between Christian Crusaders and Muslims. The role of the Assassins or Hashishin is likewise a noteworthy aspect of medieval history.Benjamin’s journey is seen through the eyes of a European Jew. Thus, his perceptions are based on a Jewish mindset that ties each place to Jewish history and survival. Uri’s illustrations add to the understanding of Benjamin’s journey. The vibrant colors help to engage the reader. The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela: Through Three Continents in the Twelfth Century would be the perfect book to share with anyone who is interested in the Middle Ages, notable European sites, and Jewish history.

My daughter wanted this for summer reading and found it interesting. It's one of those books that she didn't take as an obligation to read.

Beautifully illustrated and lovingly redacted text, telling the fascinating stories of a remarkable man.Book arrive in excellent condition and has an honored place in the family library.

Beautifully written and illustrated, The Travels of Bejamin of Tudela takes us on an incredible journey through the ancient Jewish world into the Diaspora nine hundred years ago. As the story unfolds, we visit one enchanting city after another and experience with our imaginations and amazing illustrations the sights, sounds, and smells of each beautiful and mysterious location. Don't miss this great adventure!

I read this with my 7-year-old daughter, and we both loved it. It's a fascinating story that effortlessly weaves in history and geography. The pictures are beautiful.

It didn't meet my expectations. I thought I was getting the real manuscript, translated into English, of course. Instead I got a children's book...pretty but not helpful for my research....Neil Rolde

To say this is a picture book is misleading. This book is a work of art and history for readers 8 through 12, with mature 5 to 7 year olds enjoying this as a read-aloud in sections for a few nights running. Uri Shulevitz's captivating artwork always sets apart his books, but in this case, his writing is also truly magnificent. Told largely in a first-person narrative adapted from the Hebrew with additional historical sources, Shulevitz really runs with the voice of Benjamin. He becomes as compelling as the true-life adventure he tells. As a gift (or even as class project), it would make a neat paring with Demi's _Marco Polo_, which is less readable, though similar in theme and also with gorgeous artwork. Boys will particularly like this book, I think.

It is a fairly good item for small children. According to the description I thought it was for older children - but it will do for reading to my grandchildren (whenever they come along!). The format and colours are attractive.

Review

“A chilling account of trolling, misogyny, racism, and bad history proliferated online by the Alt-Right, bolstered by the apparent authority of Greek and Latin Classics. Zuckerberg makes a persuasive case for why we need a new, more critical, and less comfortable relationship between the ancient and modern worlds in this important and very timely book.”―Emily Wilson, translator of The Odyssey“Explores how ideas about Ancient Greece and Rome are used and misused by antifeminist thinkers today.”―Time“Zuckerberg characterizes the ‘Red Pill’ online community as the corner of the internet dominated by men’s-rights activists, the alt-right, pickup artists, and the sex-eschewing communities known as Men Going Their Own Way…Virtually all these subgroups appropriate classical literature for their own purposes.”―The Atlantic“Zuckerberg presciently analyzes [‘red-pill’] communities’ (and sections of Silicon Valley’s) embrace of stoicism as a self-help tool to gain confidence, jobs, and girlfriends. Their adoration of men like Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Ovid, whose Ars Amatoria earned him the reputation of being history’s first pickup artist, is founded in a limited and distorted interpretation of ancient philosophy, she writes, lending heft and authority to sexism and abuse.”―The Nation“The book is an achievement… An admirable foray into the difficult and often distressing terrain of far-right politics, and an important contribution to the growing collection of essays, archives and discussions centered on the place of classics in today’s thorny political landscape.”―Times Literary Supplement“Traces the application―and misapplication―of classical authors and texts in online communities that see feminism as a threat.”―Bitch Media“Zuckerberg argues that it is important to study why classical texts have been weaponized by [The Red Pill] and how, regardless of their ‘appropriation of antiquity,’ the ancient texts are already problematic themselves.”―Los Angeles Review of Books blog“Not just an incredibly important book that teaches readers about the tactics of a far-right, antifeminist online community, the ‘manosphere,’ but also demonstrates ways in which experts can use their knowledge to deconstruct the use and abuse of history.”―EuropeNow“A clear explanation of the machinations of the red pill community…Offers some sense of how individuals with an interest in progressive politics might respond to not only the abuse of ancient works, but also to the works themselves. In dissecting the far right’s misuse of these texts, Zuckerberg opens the door to a reconsideration of what is and isn’t the ‘foundation of Western Civilization.’”―Ploughshares“Aims to take back the writings of the ancients from misogynist online communities.”―Publishers Weekly

Not only a useful corrective to alt-right misreadings of classics, but just as importantly, a really excellent appreciation of the Greek and Latin originals. Reading this, one learns a lot about Red Pill virtual communities -- and also a lot about Ovid, the intellectual history of Stoicism, Latin poetic structure, and more. A very worthwhile read.

I've just finished reading the chapter on misogynist websites' appropriation of Ovid's Ars Amatoria. Zuckerberg's book really illustrates the power of bringing ancient material into dialogue with the contemporary world, even when "contemporary" means disturbing online communities like the ones she documents here. Zuckerberg has worked through all these disgusting sites so that you don't have to in order to find out what new perspectives the comparison gives on debates about the poem. Just one example of many: Scholars sometimes argue Ovid is just joking or being intentionally outrageous when he appears to advocate rape, but when we see modern readers taking it all literally it makes us ask whether scholars are working too hard to make Ovid politically acceptable because we assume ancient = admirable. Few scholars are bringing ancient and modern material together in such a critical, interesting, and revelatory way.

An informed and nuanced explication of Red Pill communities. If you ever wondered how ancient history is manipulated so as to support the purposes of modern far right groups, then read this. More than that, this book gives insight into the misogyny characteristic of many of these groups.

Looks like everyone who rated this 1 star is a dude. Probably a white dude. Don’t listen to them! This book is fantastic!

A book with academic chops and an approachable writing style. Fascinating, engrossing, and so important.

Enjoyable read, well researched and thoughtful. Would recommend.

Very interesting read, worthwhile if you’ve ever seen someone use the classics as precedent for misogyny and thought “wait a sec...”, well-written and original

Fascinating critique of alt-right and feminist politics and their use of ideas from ancient Greece and Rome. There are some sick ideas out there on the internet that claim authority from antiquity - this book was great guide to both.

This is a book that has been on my to be owned list for a while and when it finally arrived in the mail today I was over the moon and of course re-read the whole thing in one setting. So what makes this book so amazing?Well if some of you somehow missed this news flash, I am mixed. And I am married to a man who does not share the same racial heritage as me. So our kids will be even more mixed. Mexican, Native American, German, Caucasian, Irish, Austrian, Czech and Prussian to be exact.Growing up mixed was interesting for me. While most of my life was spent in areas predominated by white culture, at 17 I moved into a household that primarily spoke Spanish and ate Mexican food everyday. In both areas I felt as many of the parents and Kip expressed in Mixed, that I was always pressured to chose one culture over the other. "Choose one" on the demographic forms. So what I loved about this book is how it embraces a new generation of mixed kids and paves the way for them that they don't have to choose one race over the other. They won't have to choose to identify with one race but can embrace their Heinz 57 of cultures and be proud and beautiful. If I had to pick one complaint with this book, it's that is wasn't as diversified as I'd like to see. A few mix combinations were displayed over and over again with some not pictured at all (Where are the strictly Latino/Caucasian kids?).Overall this is a book I am so happy to have as part of my permanent bookshelf and definitely plan to share it with my children in the years to come.

A few months ago, I saw the museum exposition based on this book at the Japanese-American Museum in Los Angeles. I was so delighted and inspired by it that I very nearly bought the book immediately, but I figured, "Well, c'mon, how often am I going to look at it?" But I've been haunted by these photos -- in a nice way -- so I finally gave into temptation and bought myself a copy. You probably should indulge, too.The book is, as the title implies, primarily photos of kids from mixed backgrounds. Each portrait includes the child's background, so you can see that Kieli is Chinese, Scottish and Irish. (You don't need to be told that she's a cutie.) The children are all under the age of 12; as the author said in the museum show, that is young enough that the children don't yet define themselves primarily in terms of race. For example, he asked each of them to write or draw answers to "Who are you?" and most said things like, "I like baseball" rather than "I'm Chinese."The book would be worth it simply as a cool collection of kids' portraits, and as inspiration for anyone who wanted to see how to take better pictures of their kids. But where it transcends "interesting" and approaches "magical" is in the text that accompanies many of the photos, and in the essays at the beginning of the book. Many of the photos include the "who are you?" essay or drawing ("I play soccer. I am amazing."...) or notes written by one of the kids' parents, nearly all of which are upbeat ("....I have struggled for years to come to terms with my racial identity, but I don't believe my children will have that problem").There's an engaging essay by the author, who pointed out that until the U.S. Census of 2000 he had to "choose one" when it came to identifying his race, and that such choices could make someone feel as though he's rejecting one of his parents. (Plenty of forms still have "check one," I've since noticed.) I was also inspired by the long forward by Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, the sister of President Obama, in which she wrote about the self-perceptions of those who grow up as mixed race. "The newly visible and active presence of mixed-race youth offers interesting opportunities for discussions about identity," she writes, and she explains the importance of "appreciation for complex identities and [the need to] thereby usher in a more truly inclusive understanding of 'diversity.'" The afterward by Cher is nice but it's only a page -- just one step above a book blurb. This is a wonderful book, and it will cheer you up immensely. Recommended.

I purchased this book for my church children's library, as they are expanding it to include books featuring justice and diversity. I think this book is great on several levels. The photos of the many children are wonderful. Each one looks different, of course, yet all are appealing and "approachable." There is text included, and older children may be interested in that, but just looking at, and talking about, all of the portraits will be enough for younger children.

This book is simply amazing. For anyone who has mixed race kids or who are interested in mixed race issues, etc. this book is perfect. Each page features photos of a different mixed race kid and you get to see what different races/ethnicities each kid is too! It is great for showing people that you can't always put people into one racial category or box and also helps to break down barriers and expectations in how we "think" people should look. I love this book and try and give it as a present whenever possible. It is always a great conversation starter.

I just had to take the time to review this book, because my daughter (1 year 1/2 old) loves it and so do I. I had it on my wishlist for awhile and brought it a few months ago. Wish I had brought it sooner. Every night before bedtime we have to look at the book and she will give kisses to the babies pictures. Oh and she loves the baby on the back flap (the photographer's baby) - he should have put a bigger picture of his baby in there too, because she loves that baby. If you are thinking about buying this book - just go ahead and do it - I don't think you will be disappointed - we weren't.

Mixed race kids tell their stories...a fun read...and encouraging to know that our grandson is not alone. A good read for everyone...mixed race or not.

I bought this book out of curiosity because my daughter is biracial. There are photos of children of many ages, sometimes with a little drawing or note from the child, sometimes with a note from the parent. These are all very positive, the parents talking about how great their kids are and how much they love them. Not a lot of commentary on difficulties kids may face... it's definitely a book with a 'we are all human' type of message, which is nice. Each photo also lists the 'mix' for each kid, which is interesting. I am not sure I believe all the claims, as some parents seemed to view having a mixed heritage as being like collecting Pokemon -- gotta have 'em all. Fun book, overall.
