This book was a lifesaver for me. I use a pedagogy called team-based learning in which students are assigned permanent teams at the beginning of the semester and do most of their learning through team activities. I do little lecturing; most classroom time is activity-based. That being said, developing interesting, creative, and thought-provoking activities is not my strength. "Activities for teaching positive psychology" was released a few weeks before my spring 2103 Positive Psychology course, and I used at least one activity from the book each week. A weekly three hour session is a lot of time to fill with activities; yet students said that time flew by because they were always doing something interesting (I should note that there were 48 students in the class). By the end of the course I had tried 13 of the 25 activities in the book. Some of them needed to be modified for use as team activities; I used others as written. Some of them worked extremely well, others didn’t, but even those that didn’t work as planned still generated worthwhile discussions. For example, the “Heart rate variation with positive psychology exercises” activity didn’t generate a change in average heart rate as a result of the different stimuli I presented, which was disappointing. But the class had a great discussion about why the activity might not have worked, providing them the opportunity to make connections to what they knew about research methodology. Most activities were quite successful. Students completed “The savoring expedition: An exercise to cultivate savoring” and wrote about their experience in a journal entry. I was impressed by the seriousness with which they approached this activity and how much they learned through doing it. “Internalized motivation in the classroom” was a wake-up call for some students who were faced for the first time, it seemed, with the question of why they were in college. For the “Curiosity as a social lubricant: Transforming conversations” activity, students wrote on an index card a question that they would crave to know how somebody else would answer. They eventually paired up and asked each other their questions. The conversations that resulted were lively and loud! I keep the cards on my desk to jot quick notes on the blank side, and when I turn them over I discover questions like: “Do you find yourself searching for meaning in most situations you’re in?” “Do you believe in aliens?” and “When you think about space, does it make you feel small or insignificant?” I can tell a story like the ones above about each of the activities I used. As I said earlier, this book was a lifesaver for me; the activities enriched the class enormously. My thanks go to Jeffrey Froh and Acacia Parks for putting together this collection, and I am very grateful to the faculty who agreed to share their activities with us.

This book has been extremely helpful to me this semester - I used several of the activities and my students just ate them up! There is such a variety that it it easy to modify them for specific classroom needs. Great cooperative learning activities that are good on their own or to supplement more in-depth readings or explorations on the topics. I highly recommend this book.

Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. This could have been told much better. It uses stilted language that is used in so many pseudo-Native American legends. It makes it less accessible to kids. This is a very nice story. I don't know if it is a "real" legend or mae up but it is a good story with reasonable plot and good for cultural learning but it could have been better written. Illustrations are fine for kids, clear and descriptive.

I just read this story to my grandson and I must say it was beautiful. I'm not a mushy kind of person but this was awesome. He loved it too.

Wonderful little book about the story of the Paintbrushes seen along the hills and highways in the Spring. Enjoyed it.

This book is beautiful and I'm so glad I was able to buy a copy for my kids

I like this legend because it tells the story of a young boy who works hard to achieve his goal despite being unable to join his peers in some of their activities. It introduces children to a different way of life in words and with wonderful illustrations.

Very colorful illustrations that suits the title. I loved it as much as my kid.

These books were given as gifts to Texas cousins. I used them when teaching 3rd grade, in art projects, literature, and Soc. St. They are really wonderful. The characters in Legend of the Indian Paint Brush, and Legen of the Blue Bonnet are children so children can identify with the story. And, there is always a little lesson without being preachy.

First, this being a compilation of items that may have appeared previously in Fine Woodworking is a good thing, as that assures the content quality. Second, some have commented negatively about the print format (large book and paper grade). I view this as an asset, as with the typically low Amazon price, one is not apt to protect this book as a collector item! It is meant to be read, put down & then opened wherever and read again! It is meant to be taken into your shop, to try some of the techniques!I'm a very experienced woodworker-well over 45 years now, having served a 4 year carpenter's apprenticeship, then serving 15 years as a journeyman, before leaving the trade to start a manufacturing business (still there). I have a very well equipped shop and spend my spare time there. I have built most of the furniture in our home and also many for others. In this volume, I've found much that is still fresh to me, for just handtool users, for powertool users and for hybrid woodworkers. Cheap price, so who cares if it gets some tattered pages, saw dust in the binding or stains on the cover or pages! It is meant to give you ideas and if a single idea saves me from screwing up a $50 piece of lumber, then the $16 Amazon price has paid me quite the return!

Almost too much information overload. large book (10 1/2"x13 1/2"). Has 525 pages, printed on newspaper thickness paper. The content section is well itemized to almost anything wood related you can think of, Good diagrams, Good black and white pictures. Has front and back page areas to make notes. Covers the workshop, Wood (types, strengths, choosing), All types of woodworking, carving, wood tools (hand and power), Routing, gluing, clamping technique, joints(types, strength and weaknesses), molding, milling, jigs, sharpening tools, scraping, Sanding, Finishing and refinishing technique, Making tables-dressers-chairs-cabinets-bed frames-drawers and more, honing your skills, LOTS OF IDEAS, TROUBLE SHOOTING and TIPS (too many to list here). They tried to put as much info in here as they could, and they did a good job.

Excellent book, I knocked off one star because it is hard to read or store on the bookshelf due to the large size of the book and small size of the print. I would have gladly paid more to have it in a smaller form factor and larger print even if it required me to purchase in two separate volumes

This book has some great information but whats up with the formatting. Paper quality seems on the thin side, not a durable reference for the shop and the text seems a bit small. I feel that the design takes away from the quality of the information. Not one of Tauntons best. Just an "OK" addition to my woodworking library.

If you only get one book on woodworking, it should be this one. It covers a huge array of topics in an easy-to-read format, and I routinely return to this book for reference. It is not printed on the most durable of papers, though, so you have to keep it dry and protected from the elements...and stains, varnishes, oils, etc. All in all, I really dig this book.

I think this book is one of the best published on working with wood, but it does have flaws.The pictures are not good. They were probably taken for publication on slick paper, like Fine Woodworking Magazine, and were not changed when they went to newsprint for this book. Newsprint requires a much lighter photograph with less contrast to print properly. In woodworking, photographs are important in understanding the process being described. “One picture is worth a thousand words” is no joke.Nonetheless, the pictures are not totally black. Fine Woodworking tested the strength of wood joints. They were all glued with Tightbond 3 and the testing procedure was first-rate. The half lap joint was the strongest tested, which surprised me. The complete list is remarkable. The half lap took over 1000 pounds of force to break the joint. Many other joints are tested and the results will improve your woodworking.Get the book.AD2

Excellent guide for the begginer or long time woodworker. Great info on all facets from wood features and furniture design! Great on a Kindle as I can increase the font size and enlarge the drawings.

What I liked. The book from what I did read was informative. What I didn’t like is the books pages were very thin like tissue paper so you have to turn the pages gently as to not tear them and the font, xx small I looked it up. I have to use a magnifying glass to read and that was too hard to follow. It was a waste of money and I won’t read anymore.
