Excellent overview of the early Cristianities---proto-orthodox and its many heretical cousins.I've read 10+ Ehrman books, another 10+ historical/critical bible studies and dozens of pieces of atheist literature. I think those reads assisted me in fully enjoying and understanding this book; my previous reading experiences "greased the rails" for this book. Perhaps you won't need that assist, but I'm glad I had it.Again, this is MANDATORY reading for a person who wants the true story, rather than faith's cockeyed version.Ehrman doesn't say it, but he certainly suggests that the following idea is true: Today, no one practices the religion practiced by Jesus, and Jesus never practiced any of the religions practiced today. Christians today are generally clueless regards their roots, but through no fault of Ehrman's. He cannot force people to read well-researched and authoritative texts.Score another point for Ehrman on the playing field of religious research geared toward the common man. Please write another, while I track down the dozen-or-so Ehrman books I've yet to read.Thank you, Bart.

The book was content-heavy. Not a difficult read, but I did need more breaks than when I read a couple of other Ehrman's books, such as, Misquoting Jesus and How Jesus Became God. Sometimes books have what I call, "filler" in them that take up your time but have no meaningful content. This book had no "filler". It was jam-packed with information about the different sects of Christianity--Ebionites, Marcionites, Gnostics, etc... It explained what each Church Father believed was the "right" way to view Jesus' divinity and what each one of them considered heretical. The pacing of the book was steady and maintained my interest all the way to the end. Excellent book.

I saw this book recommended by Matt Dillahunty of The Atheist Experience. It's a well written book, unbiased and doesn't come across as trying to undermine Christianity. Instead, it gives voice to early Christian groups that were sincere and trying to understand Jesus' messageb but who had very different interpretations than the group that formed the new testament.I'm no longer Christian, and the book helped me to see the early Christian groups in a more understanding and positive light , as they sincerely looked to grasp and interpret the teachings associated with Jesus. I found it very helpful to see that the interpretations and theology that's in the new testament are just one group's take on things. Other sincere (and very sizable) early Christian groups had very different interpretations based on the same teachings from Jesus. These groups were reframed by the group that won as small in size and representing some wild, heretical perspective; this book corrects this and shows the truth. Interestingly, I thought of how my rejection of what's in the new testament may very well be rejection of a specific group's misinterpretation of Jesus & that I could find alignment with other early Christian groups. It also served to resolve a question of mine with respect to the historicity of Jesus (so many different and sincere groups with different interpretations and their own Scriptures make me fall squarely on the view that Jesus was a historical figure).

For any one interested in the history, authenticity of the New Testament books, this is a must reading. The author successfully makes the reading interesting and, more importantly, very readable. There are occasions of repetitiveness but aside from that I highly recommend the book but it needs to be approached with a great deal of openness and an absolute lack of religious bias. This is not a book for the dogmatically religious person for whom any writing that deviates from a perceived perspective is, a priori, false and inaccurate. The author gave me a wonderful sense of the inner conflicts and dynamics that early Christianity had to endure before becoming the standard and established religious dogma. It also gives an invaluable perspective on the various prejudices and struggles that religious leaders had to encounter in order to retain their views of historical truths as they interpreted the existing documents at the time. I personally could not put the down and was enthralled by it. Highly recommended.

One of Ehrman’s best, I think. Thought-provoking and speculative, yet grounded, this book explores alternative early Christianities before “Proto-Orthodox Christianity” won the battle and shoved the rest aside. You’ll read about the Ebionites, the Marcionites, Gnosticism, and the evolving orthodox church. Ehrman puts all on even ground so that each has an equal voice, because recent discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls have proven just how diverse Christian practices really were back in the first and second centuries.Ehrman doesn’t mince words when he discusses the “forgeries” both in and out of the Bible, so do be aware the topic gets plenty of ink. This does lead to some interesting conversation, though. The Secret Gospel of Mark, the Pastoral letters in Paul’s name, and the Gospel of Thomas come under scrutiny. Small wonder that in the battle for supremacy between the various Christian branches, the claim for apostolic succession played a central role. Quickly in orthodox church tradition, our 27 books of the New Testament are all tied directly to the apostles or companions, while other Christian writings are denounced as inauthentic. So what are the repercussions of the victory of proto-orthodox Christianity? How has our world been shaped by this? Ehrman feels the significance of this victory can scarcely be overstated. Christianity would surely have no doctrine of Christ as both fully divine and human, and of course no Trinitarian doctrine. But the effects would have been felt far further than Christian debates, and the book’s final chapter left me with much to think about.Definitely recommended.Oxford University Press, © 2003, 294 pagesISBN: 0-19-514183-0

Outstanding resource, don't know why I didn't buy this before. You can get all kinds of DIY info on the 996/997 all over the web and YouTube, but this book compresses a great deal of detail into one place. You might think it's silly (I did too, at first) to devote a "Project" about how to jack the car up. Who doesn't know how to jack it up? Well, all the points including two along the center line, and which jack, stands, and why is not something I knew right off. Almost every "Project" has those little pointers that make the work much easier. Having done a few of the projects and figured them out myself before getting this book, I could quibble with a few details and photo quality, but not many. And each project has a URL to get larger photos. With this book as a guide I feel much more confident starting a significant project, and even a simple one for the first time, because I'll avoid the mistakes that are usually learned the first time. Example: if replacing wheel bearings, put the bearings in the freezer before installing. Another positive is specific recommendations for tools, including a number of unusual ones that the author's experience has shown are valuable to have (not expensive ones, just unusual). I think this will become my go-to first reference for 996 DIY.Other reviews mention disappointment in the book that you need a full tool set. I think if you want to go past the super basic projects, yes you will need a significant tool set but you don't have to invest a great deal. Many bundled sets from Home Depot for example (mine) are plenty good enough, with a few specific other items as mentioned in the book. To do anything beyond the basics (about 90% of the projects in the book), yes you need a good tool set. The bottom line, though, is that if you do even a single ONE of the larger projects in this book yourself, you have already recouped much if not all of the cost of the tools. My guess is $500-$700 for the tools, plus whatever you want to spend for a good jack and stands ($300 - $700). Taking the high end of those, it's about 8 hours of a mechanic's labor. As also mentioned in the book, I would also highly recommend getting the Enthusiast Durametric tool to do diagnosis through the ECU fault codes and resetting check engine light, etc. But then, I have found that the 996 is pretty enjoyable and easy to work on, more so than most cars, so I will easily get back many times what I've spent on tools. But even the simple projects requiring few special skills or tools can save you a lot of money and let you become more familiar with the car: changing oil, air filter; changing serpentine belt; replace plugs and coils; replace oxygen sensors; replace battery; replace hood shocks; replace window regulator and motor; install an aftermarket stereo head unit for example. All these will require just an hour or two and under $200 in tools although a couple will require at least a usable jack and one jack stand.

This book is a must have for all 996 and 997 owners. Even if you don't plan on even attempting repairing your Porsche yourself, this book will give you an idea and appreciation of the work being done by your Porsche mechanic. I was surprised at how many repairs that can be done at home with minimal tools required. Nice to have all info in one place instead of searching online and having to spend hours in forums taking advise from "Joe Schmo" on how to work on my Porsche. Pictures are clear and useful. Detailed step by step instructions. The book also outlines how long the job takes, tools required, cost of parts, skill level recommended, tips, performance gained and important repairs to do while car is apart. At the price of this book, it is a steel. I was afraid this book was going to be too general but that is not the case, better than some dedicated repair manuals I have used. With this book you will have the confidence to tackle your repairs yourself or at the very least let you know if a repair looks over your head.

Well presented book as reference. It has many hints and tips on working on your Porsche. It is not as detailed, but is more of a general reference on any upgrading projects for the car. After glancing through the book, it gave me all kinds of ideas to upgrade my 997.2. Although the book only covers the 911 all the way to 997, but other than some slight differences it covers just about 90% of the 997.2 Porsches. As I said it is not a detailed step by step how-to guide for working on your car, but after referring to the topic, I have no problem finding additional detailed information through the forums and internet for specific details.

This book is superb. It is in essence a color workshop manual. If you do your own maintenance, especially any engine work such as replacing camshafts or dropping the motor, this book is perfect. Although some of the information is available in various places on the web, it is much more concise and easier to pick up with this book rather than spending hours sifting thru rennlist posts. Clear differences in explanations between the five chain and three chain engines isn't in most of anything you might read online. Glad I got the book.

This book is a great resource of practical information on the 996. I keep it in the trunk so it's with me all the time. It covers so many areas of the car and it's laid out very well. My sunroof malfunctioned and wouldn't close a few months ago, Porsche dealer starts at $200 to look at it, the chapter covering the sun roof suggested I re-set or reboot the actuator. ...and it was fixed!! Tons of ideas, practical information.

Great but some of the estimated times must be based on previous experience accomplishing something similar. Add a good 2-4 hours to estimated time if it's your first run at some of these mechanical repairs. Also take note that this is a Porsche and as such you will need "special" tools not available at your local auto parts store ($$$).

Very well done reference manual. If you own a car that this manual addresses you need this even if your not a wrench. This is good for reference when your talking with your favorite mechanic.5 stars

There is a sameness about many true murder stories, often it is just the time and place that differs. This one is REALLY different. The killer's degree of evilness hidden behind a normal façade is the worst I have read about (and I have read everything I can lay my hands on in this genre!). It is a clichéd term: "it defies belief" but that term applies to this one. The most imaginative writer could not conjure up these characters (killer and associated personalities) if they tried. William Phelps always delivers a good product but he has surpassed himself this time. Don't miss this one.

Let the book and story speak for itself William Phelps is an excellent writer and draws you in from the first page of this book. It is unbelievable what one women’s obsession with another man will lead her murder and attempted murder. we get up close and personal with a sociopathic mind. This crime was especially heinous in its senselessness and absolute disregard for anyone but herself. Sheila Davalloo's obsession for a man who didn't want her led her to kill the woman standing in her way and then later attempt to kill her own husband - who did love her. Anna Lisa Raymundo the innocent victim whose only crime was to go out with a two timing looser called Nelson. It was equally unbelievable the way Shelia, her husband and "boyfriend" of the killer thought - especially since they are all highly intelligent and educated people! It makes you wonder about trust and communication within relationships. Can people be that gullible when Shelia talks so openly about the 3-way triangle to both her husband and friends and nobody catches on. Paul you should have opened your eyes their where plenty of red flags warning you. The way your wife carried on and got you to leave the house so she could be with her brother who was supposedly suffering from a mental illness. No matter how many times you asked her to tell him about the two of you, her excuses should have been a warning and you never got to meet him. Why didn’t you confront her parents? Removing all trace of you from the house night after night when she was seeing her lover not her brother and you coming home to find men’s clothes in the house that were not yours.Nelson didn't tell police about his affair with Sheila, because he didn't want anyone to know what an unfaithful bloke he delayed justice for years, hurting Anna Lisa's family and Paul. Paul did not catch on to Sheila lies and deception before she played a game handcuffed and tied him willingly to a chair and stabbed him in the chest. Nelson you can take some responsibility here for hiding your torrid affairs which would have alerted police much sooner.Readers You simply have to read this book to believe people like her actually exist. This stuff can't be made up. The courtroom drama into the tangled web of deception gets unravelled and the prosecution does an excellent job. Only Shelia who has the narcissistic tendencies would represent herself.I loved this book but I am still shaking my head in disbelief of the gullibility of 2 men who are supposed to be bright but are nothing but stupid when it comes to believing one women’s word.

OBSESSED by M. William Phelps is an excellent true crime read.It is the story of the murder of Anna Lisa Raymundo. Thenarrative encompasses a wild toad sort of ride to the ultimate identification and conviction of the killer, Sheila Davalloo.Nowhere is a better example of the bizaarre behavior of a true narcissist evident than in this story. It not only speaks to the egotistical grandeur of this type of individual but also to the desire to "win at all costs" even at one's own expense and ultimate demise. Phelps does a superb job of capturing this personality disorder in its multi faceted complexity.

About this book anyone reading this will already of looked at either in other reviews or the book synopsis, so I won't bother adding more to that rather large pile of raving reviews. What I will say is if you enjoy true crime novels, then you'll love this one, & if you have never read one and/or think you won't enjoy one, then I'd suggest spending a few dollars on any one of Mr Phelps novels, doesn't even matter which book really, make a drink & sit yourself down, and prepare to be surprised as I'd wager you'd find yourself immersed in the book and wholeheartedly enjoying every minute of it.

The book is in dire need of a competent editor. As a fellow reviewer wisely pointed out, this convoluted, disjointed account of a true crime, is hard to follow, and hard to enjoy. Too many pages for a story that jumps around like a disoriented kangaroo, and even though the crime is one of those too crazy to imagine it could happen, it is at the same time way too predictable for the veil of mystery the writer tries to convey initially. A sentence, out of so many found in the book, that goes like this: "There were several kids in the distance playing basketball. They did not seem to notice what was going on. Paul put an eye on them, however." After a while the reader realizes that maybe this author thinks he can write, and really believe it, but not so, and as I put an eye on the pages in this book, I realized that the best part of the book were some of the photographs included, showing some of the protagonists in this bizarre true crime story. 2 Stars.

The case itself was very interesting, I was not at all familiar with the story. Mr. Phelps writes well enough, but needs a better editor. Especially at the beginning he jumps around a lot. There was also some unnecessary repetition of descriptions of the main characters. While talking about the initial investigation of the crime scene he refers to "the victim" or "the woman" and then abruptly begins referring to her as Anna Lisa without explaining how the police discovered her identity. Obviously, the reader knows who the victim is, but this is another example of the choppiness of the narrative in the beginning. I did enjoy the book, and have read several other books by Mr. Phelps. This one just seems to have been presented as many of the true crime stories on Discovery ID and other tv channels - with too much recapping of the story after every commercial break.
