and, very timely book as well... considering how the rise of Nazi sympathizers keeps growing in USA. Just last night on the news, another CA High School, giving Nazi salute with beer cups placed in Nazi lay out...I have always been fascinated by the rise of Hitler... how could anything like this happen? How could go ignored for so long?So the story of survivors piece meals this together, the more books the better, as history always repeats itself, as I guess humans are tooo busy to focus on history... things fade too fast...The Bill Baily story is great, the author is amazing, although I had to keep googling some words ;)When reading the book, it kinda puts me back in that time period... marveling, how can this be going on, how can the world not be outraged...but then I think, it happened in Africa not long ago again...while touring a Holocaust musuem years ago...their was a quote on the wall that said.... (from memory)what you are about to seeis the result of good people, looking the other way..A great lesson that prob. never gained any traction...anyway, if you are a Nazi history buff, another great book...

I couldn't put The Agitator, by journalist Peter Duffy, down. The title indicates that the hero of this book was more than just a vandal. He was one of the early fighters in the war against Hitler, and in struggles after that.William Bailey was a seaman who worked in engine rooms. In 1935, just after the Nazi regime in Germany started persecuting Jews. Bailey was also a Communist. When the German ship Bremen docked in in New York, William Bailey engineered what came to be known as the Bremen Riot or the Bremen Flag Incident. Bailey and other antifascists stormed the ship and tore down the swastika flag. They threw the flag into the harbor.Bailey and his comrades were beaten and arrested. There were plenty of American authorities who sympathized with the German government, but many Americans, including the judge in the case, did not. Bailey's defense attorney said that the swastika was odious to the world and a hateful symbol to many Americans.Hermann Goering admitted what the defense counsel said. He said the swastika was an anti-Jewish symbol for the world.William Bailey spent the rest of his life fighting for freedom and against fascism. Like many, he was persecuted in the McCarthy Era.William Bailey said if he was remembered at all, it might be for his actions on the Bremen.

This author has written other books and is a great at verbalizing his thoughts. He is following up in the story about William Bailey, but there is far more depth to the book which describes the ship which was the darling of the German people as a passenger ship. There was a crew of 950 who took care of 2200 passengers. This in today's thoughts would be unheard of as there would be too many crew. One of the things that I got a great kick out of was the book starts out with the old time song, "Won't you come home Bill Bailey, Won't you come home". An interesting fact was that he came from a large family and the mother was from Ireland and took care of 6 children all by herself as her husband abandoned them. She did whatever she could to support them and the help of neighbors was really a lot of her good fortune.Bill Bailey was not his real name as it was fictionalized. He went off to sea as a youngster and grew up to be a man!Great book and highly recommended. You will marvel at the choice of words and probably will have to dig out your dictionary to learn some new ones. High recommended as an interesting read!

A rather unique story... how one man defied Hitler years before the war started. William Bailey organized a group of men to take down the swastika on Hitler's prized passenger ship, the SS Bremen in 1935. Eventually a trial would come about with all involved acquitted.Bailey was obviously against everything Hitler stood for, which makes the fact that he was a Communist for a long period of time a bit perplexing. To his credit, Bailey eventually quit the Communist party. Two of the unsung heroes of the book in my opinion are Bailey's mother, who raised 13 kids, and the Jewish detective who defended the Bremen crew's right to fly the swastika flag. Probably the most ironic part of the whole book.A bit bogged down in spots, but overall a good read about an important time in the nation's history.

A must read story about William Bailey's courage and vision. He spent his life battling fascism. Many Americans were indifferent to Hitler at the time. He of course was not indifferent and is remembered for his actions in cutting down the Nazi flag in New York Harbor. He ultimately was acquitted for his actions.I highly recommend this book for a study in not looking the other way.

A wise man once said that history is often colored by the viewpoint of survivors, and such is the case with this book. It is a fascinating read about a brave act on a New York dock at a time when Americans were not paying a great deal of attention to the outrageous behavior by Nazi Germany. William Bailey was a dock worker and a political activist who joined with others of a like mind to rip the German flag from the bow of S.S. Bremen as it prepared to sail. The act outraged the anti-Semitic mob of Nazi sympathizers at the dock, and a conflict and trial resulted. The publicity gained by Bailey certainly helped alert America to the ominous mindset of Nazi Germany. This book is pretty much a tale of an ordinary man who stood for the right in days when the wrong was pretty much having its way internationally. Today as anti-Semitism is once more raising its ugly head in radical right-wing politics, Bailey’s tale shows how the courage of a single person can make a difference.
