I had read Herriot's series on his veterinary experiences many years ago but was prompted to revisit it again after reading the latest book by Jan Karon where I became reacquainted with Father Tim and the small town of Mitford, NC. Not yet ready to leave so charming an atmosphere, I happened upon a kindred reader in the waiting room of a medical office who was in the process of reading Herriot's little gem and I recognized it at once as "just what the doctor ordered."Herriot's books, of course, are set in the northern English countryside, complete with all the "delicious" dialects that are characteristic of the region. He captures the local atmosphere brilliantly -- in recalling all the colorful characters (both animal and human) he meets while conducting his rounds and they are "delicious." As in the Mitford Series, there are squabbles and courtships, trials and triumphs and an endless number of humorous anecdotes to enjoy and you will come away feeling you've had a lovely vacation in the North Country amid some of the friendliest folk around.

I have not seen the BBC series - one of the most popular of all time, so this was all new to me. What a delight. Just one great story after another, as James Herriot, aka James Wight, learns the ropes of the veterinary business. I don't know how I made it to age 63 without read this book. James Wight is a fun and funny writer. The stories feel so real, but apparently are loosely based on real events and stories, not necessarily commensurate with the time period in which they are portrayed, all wrapped in the guise of an autobiography. But it really doesn't matter. This a truly a 5 star masterpiece. It's no wonder it has withstood the test of time.

What is not to like...I have read this at least twice before as a book, now it is on my good old Kindle, it is like visiting an old friend..This is James first book, where he tells about meeting his employer, the area, the people and of course the animals he deals with. After all the trash we run across daily what a breath of fresh air.Herriot is a good writer and keeps things moving along..A word to the wise, do not loan out your James Herriot books they don't find their way back, people like and keep them because theyare so good to read....I recommend them for all ages, read to those too young to read, those who like animals and someone who needs a lift at theend of the day...One also learns of the language of England and the mountain folks...Those of us who have worked around animals most ofour lives really enjoy what James needs to deal with daily..You have not lived until you have run across a muddy pen wearing big overshoes in 30 degree below zero with a mad cowblowing snot in your back pocket, nope ..Dutch........

Inspired by my father's love of the Herriot books, I watched the TV series on the Beeb from its first broadcast and enjoyed the adaptations. I thought that 2018 would not be too late to introduce my Tennessean wife to the books, and she's devouring this, the first in the sequence.I'm not unfamiliar with the life and characters as portrayed in the books, but she's finding it a new experience that perhaps goes part way to explain some of the little idiosyncrasies that she's come to expect. I never could read the stories without hearing the accents (and dialects) in my head; although I'm not from Yorkshire and was born after the events described in them, but they still manage to create a wistful remembrance of things past (that are probably less common in the 21st century) and with a little experience having seen a vitnery at work on a farm, doubly so.I suppose that somebody with a little experience of farm animals or even pets would feel an empathy with one or more of the situations described in the books; that's the way it is for me, but what stands out more than that are the characters. If you've been around long enough, no matter where it has been, you probably recognize the characters of Siegfried and Tristan, and the way that Herriot has to deal with them in the midst of four-legged characters who can be even more cranky or wanton.I know somebody who's read the book and feels that all he needs then is a good Yorkshire pint or three, a view of the dales and drinking partners with dry wistful humour to make it through the day. Sometimes, I agree.

I bought this for my adult son because it was one of my all time favorite books when I was much younger. He is usually into mysteries or thrillers so I wasn't sure he would like this. He ended up reading the whole book in just two days. He loved it. His comment was "I tried to make it last, but I just wanted to keep reading." He is anxious to read some of Herriot's other books. This book is filled with wonderful accounts of many of the situations country vet Herriot (pen name), gets involved in while building his practice. Herriot had both large and small animal patients (hence the title) and the animals were often easier to deal with than their owners. He writes with a great sense of humor and with his attention to detail and great descriptions, the reader feels like they are there in the chilly barn watching him work on a cow or in his examining room working on a sick dog or cat.

I am so glad I read this follow-up to the first book by this author, written as her family moved to Costa Rica with a great deal of excitement. After reading a lot about moving to Costa Rica from various sources, I was starting to doubt the appeal, particularly with regard to protecting your belongings - there are far too many stories of people having their homes stripped while they are away, and sometimes when they just leave for several hours. The author tells it like it is. In short, why move somewhere - at great expense - that in order to live within your budget, you have to make sacrifice after sacrifice of the things you are used to, and like. You might as well stay where you're at! I came to the same conclusion as the author. Sure, I will continue to visit Costa Rica, it's wonderful to visit, but I have given up on the idea of moving there, there are too many drawbacks.

Just finished reading this practical book. As Arden repeatedly asserts, she is not so much advising, as offering specifics about the many aspects of living in Costa Rica on a full-time basis. Anyone thinking of re-locating there should definitely read this as part of their due diligence. Her wealth of details and links will be invaluable. My husband and I had a CR house-building/-owning experience, which we don't regret, but in retrospect would have not embarked upon had we known what we have learned along the way and which we would had more of a clue about if this book had been written sooner! It turned out to be an adventure and a way to become immersed in Tico culture, and we dearly loved our house, but it would surely have been easier to rent from the beginning. To me that is the biggest takeaway from the book. We sold our house there last year and came out about even, and really don't regret the whole experience overall, but we certainly learned for ourselves that for a seasonal home, renting is definitely the way to go.You can't go wrong with this book if you are seriously leaning toward moving to Costa Rica. You will get a good taste of what is really involved.

This book brought some good points to my attention. I've read several books in preparation of relocating to Costa Rica. Most give all of the advantages. This book covers all of that and in addition the disadvantages. I appreciate hearing the ups and downs of people who have already made the move. Not just the ups.

I have read both of Arden's books. They are very well written and easy to read. I feel like she's in the room explaining the pros and cons of moving to Costa Rica to me. If you are thinking of moving to this country this would be your #1 choice for an honest overview of the good, the bad, and in between.

Excellent, sober look at moving to Costa Rica. Should be very helpful to anyone contemplating a move to CR.

This book is a must read for someone considering a move to Costa Rica. It is balanced, tells a lot of truth about the good and bad of a life in Costa Rica, and is based on real-life reports of people's decisions.

Good practical information with unbiased opinions concerning researching possible destinations; choosing, moving to and living in Costa Rica by expats.

Arden's book came along a few years too late for us. Not her fault. She wouldn't have imagined she'd be writing it, I'm sure, as she and her family were living in Costa Rica and we were doing our due diligence 5 years ago.We read her first excellent book ( "Unraveling the Mysteries of Moving to Costa Rica") and it was very helpful as we made the decision to move to Costa Rica---permanently, we thought. The book was honest and thorough and addressed many of the concerns potential ex pats need to consider.But. Had we read "Reality Check" prior to making the commitment to move, we likely STILL would've made the move, but we would've saved 10s of thousands of dollars by (1) not purchasing a home and (2) not immediately applying for residency. Just 2 (pricey) examples.Arden makes it clear that she does not regret the experience of moving to Costa Rica, and we do not regret our decision either. But "Reality Check" will give you so much food for thought prior to making a move, permanent or temporary; we thought we were going into the move with eyes wide open, but no one had ever written a book like this one. Just skim through the table of contents to get an idea of the subject matter."Reality Check" is an essential part of anyone's due diligence. Arden writes with humor, shares her experiences both good and not-so-good, and provides information about all aspects of living in Costa Rica----which you honestly cannot understand until you have lived there. We blithely ignored advice from other ex pats to rent, rent, rent for instance, but Arden gives real life statistics of what can happen if you do choose to buy---and then need to move back to the US.We're ex ex pats. We loved Costa Rica and will always treasure our experience living there for 2 years. The country is beautiful, the Ticos are friendly and helpful, the ex pat community welcoming. We'd do it again, but in retrospect, we would research some "non rose colored glasses" accounts from those who have returned.

#55,134 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Page-turning suspense, profound human interest, a remarkable narrative arc, and shocking violence. Subject: geology. I'm not kidding.I am a complete newbie to geology. But even if, like me, you don't know schist about the subject, you will enjoy this wonderful book. Other reviewers here have pointed out some outdated information or subjective emphases. Okay, but he's writing a narrative, not a textbook. Before charging off on this book -- which, BTW, is great value for money -- be sure you're familiar with Kindle's look-up feature. I used it literally dozens of times to get definitions of unfamiliar terms. What you get out of this book depends on the effort you put into it.

I've read McPhee's geology books all the way through twice now and plan to read them all again a few more times. I was an art major, so the science is all foreign territory to me, but you couldn't ask for a better guide. I loved learning about the reasons why the landscape is the way it is, about the ways geologists work and think, about their different histories, personalities, and views. Plus, having read about two-thirds of McPhee's whole oeuvre, the prose here is the best of the best (which, in my opinion, is always excellent and fun, anyway). The world looks different to me now, but not just now, but also deep into the past and the future. In any case, I definitely feel this is one of those books that ought to be on the shortlist of "must-reads" for everyone, just because it's such an amazing, mind-expanding adventure that also happens to a true story (albeit a story that's always under review and subject to amendment, in the way of all science).

I most enjoyed "Basin and Range" in this tetralogy of geological nonfiction, as that is also the physiography of the land where I live. John McPhee is your best guide and storyteller of our immense, vast, and deep continental history. I cannot properly review the work in a short space, but let me disclose a rather astounding little surprise of the book: While traveling through the Nevada desert at night, McPhee and his companion (a geological expert) witness a large hovering vessel--a vehicle looking very alien and extraterrestrial--fly and propel itself in the most unusual and technologically unique way (but too advanced and luminescent to be military, especially 35 years ago). The next morning the local paper had comments from a number of locals who also reported seeing it.The incident is described in less than a page, only a short aside in the progressive, westward description of the continent, numbering hundreds of pages on an otherwise unrelated subject (or is it?). But by this point, McPhee has already established his credibility with conscientious articulations about his subjects, as well as restrained and informed expressions of the Earth, so that this aside cannot be dismissed so easily. For me, it caused a tumbler to fall in my brain, which seems to have had cascading effects, to the point that I have re-assessed possibilities for such phenomena on Earth.Which ironically brings me full circle to McPhee's subject. If I accept McPhee's account (and I think I just might) it is impossible to not think of the time it must take to travel to Earth from distant origins. Even with incomprehensible technology, the time in travelling must have been immense. And the conclusion emerging from both McPhee's written descriptions, and the cracks in the rocks themselves, is the breath-taking sense of deep time. (Could it be that if visits have occurred, they were only by artificial life forms that can physically endure thousands or even millions of years? Would they have been created by organic life forms? Did they rule over them? But I digress.)The point is that reading McPhee's book and the study of geology give me the sense of how recently we have come along. How even the oldest of the rocks we see, the Precambrian gneiss or schist, could well have come a billion years after other rock planets had been left by those who sought to gather and collect rocks on other planets. If you visit the Grand Canyon you get to see rocks that go back almost half of the 4.5 billion years that span the age of our world. These are the real documents of our Earth's history. And maybe even reflections of eras that coincide with glorious ages of exploration by others in our universe. Maybe that brief blip about a possible alien encounter, in the middle of a lengthy and conscientiously-described account of the geological history of our land, is not so out of place.

As someone with a technical background but virtually no geology, this well written book is just a bit too much for me. I love the way McPhee writes and his descriptions are masterful. Still, the quantity of geologic periods and the terms that accompany them left me weary. Maybe I'm a visual learner and would need to take a geology class in the field where I could see just what he is talking about.

This is a collection of 5 previous books by this iconic Geologist/writer. Highly technical but for the reader who will stick with him, the best way to gain insights into global geologic history. A good refresher and teacher for geologists whose educations or experiences are dated. Keep a dictionary handy, but stick with it to become re-educated or refreshed in how the world got this way.
