I am so glad I read this follow-up to the first book by this author, written as her family moved to Costa Rica with a great deal of excitement. After reading a lot about moving to Costa Rica from various sources, I was starting to doubt the appeal, particularly with regard to protecting your belongings - there are far too many stories of people having their homes stripped while they are away, and sometimes when they just leave for several hours. The author tells it like it is. In short, why move somewhere - at great expense - that in order to live within your budget, you have to make sacrifice after sacrifice of the things you are used to, and like. You might as well stay where you're at! I came to the same conclusion as the author. Sure, I will continue to visit Costa Rica, it's wonderful to visit, but I have given up on the idea of moving there, there are too many drawbacks.

Just finished reading this practical book. As Arden repeatedly asserts, she is not so much advising, as offering specifics about the many aspects of living in Costa Rica on a full-time basis. Anyone thinking of re-locating there should definitely read this as part of their due diligence. Her wealth of details and links will be invaluable. My husband and I had a CR house-building/-owning experience, which we don't regret, but in retrospect would have not embarked upon had we known what we have learned along the way and which we would had more of a clue about if this book had been written sooner! It turned out to be an adventure and a way to become immersed in Tico culture, and we dearly loved our house, but it would surely have been easier to rent from the beginning. To me that is the biggest takeaway from the book. We sold our house there last year and came out about even, and really don't regret the whole experience overall, but we certainly learned for ourselves that for a seasonal home, renting is definitely the way to go.You can't go wrong with this book if you are seriously leaning toward moving to Costa Rica. You will get a good taste of what is really involved.

This book brought some good points to my attention. I've read several books in preparation of relocating to Costa Rica. Most give all of the advantages. This book covers all of that and in addition the disadvantages. I appreciate hearing the ups and downs of people who have already made the move. Not just the ups.

I have read both of Arden's books. They are very well written and easy to read. I feel like she's in the room explaining the pros and cons of moving to Costa Rica to me. If you are thinking of moving to this country this would be your #1 choice for an honest overview of the good, the bad, and in between.

Excellent, sober look at moving to Costa Rica. Should be very helpful to anyone contemplating a move to CR.

This book is a must read for someone considering a move to Costa Rica. It is balanced, tells a lot of truth about the good and bad of a life in Costa Rica, and is based on real-life reports of people's decisions.

Good practical information with unbiased opinions concerning researching possible destinations; choosing, moving to and living in Costa Rica by expats.

Arden's book came along a few years too late for us. Not her fault. She wouldn't have imagined she'd be writing it, I'm sure, as she and her family were living in Costa Rica and we were doing our due diligence 5 years ago.We read her first excellent book ( "Unraveling the Mysteries of Moving to Costa Rica") and it was very helpful as we made the decision to move to Costa Rica---permanently, we thought. The book was honest and thorough and addressed many of the concerns potential ex pats need to consider.But. Had we read "Reality Check" prior to making the commitment to move, we likely STILL would've made the move, but we would've saved 10s of thousands of dollars by (1) not purchasing a home and (2) not immediately applying for residency. Just 2 (pricey) examples.Arden makes it clear that she does not regret the experience of moving to Costa Rica, and we do not regret our decision either. But "Reality Check" will give you so much food for thought prior to making a move, permanent or temporary; we thought we were going into the move with eyes wide open, but no one had ever written a book like this one. Just skim through the table of contents to get an idea of the subject matter."Reality Check" is an essential part of anyone's due diligence. Arden writes with humor, shares her experiences both good and not-so-good, and provides information about all aspects of living in Costa Rica----which you honestly cannot understand until you have lived there. We blithely ignored advice from other ex pats to rent, rent, rent for instance, but Arden gives real life statistics of what can happen if you do choose to buy---and then need to move back to the US.We're ex ex pats. We loved Costa Rica and will always treasure our experience living there for 2 years. The country is beautiful, the Ticos are friendly and helpful, the ex pat community welcoming. We'd do it again, but in retrospect, we would research some "non rose colored glasses" accounts from those who have returned.
