Review

"If there were any justice in this world—at least as far as historical memory goes—then Gustav Landauer would be remembered, right along with Bakunin and Kropotkin, as one of anarchism's most brilliant and original theorists."  —Jesse Cohn, author, Anarchism and the Crisis of Representation"Should be required reading for anyone with an interest in radical social change."  —James Horrox, author, A Living Revolution"The most influential German anarchist intellectual of the 20th century."  —Paul Avrich, author, Anarchist Voices"Wikileaks founder Julian Assange prefaced entries on a now-defunct blog with a quotation from German Gustav Landauer, an anarchist thinker who was killed by troops in Munich in 1919."  —CBS News"Landauer's work is not a systematic account of non-state socialism, but it is an interesting step in the historical evolution of such accounts, married to a sound awareness of the importance of instilling what might elsewhere be called an 'ethos'." —www.MarxAndPhilosophy.org.uk

This was s not really what I expected.. but nevertheless a great book .. when it said usable stencils I though it would have usable stencils not just pics which are stencils .. also smaller than expected a little lager than a novel rather than art book size ..

Interesting as a history book, but be aware there are not actual stencils in this book. These are the monotone images you can copy onto another medium, and then you will have to cut out your own stencils.

This book helped me stencil a bond between me and my feminist sister.

Not what I was expecting but I still was able to work with it.

One word Awesomeness

Real estate of life

Excellent resource for introducing a selection of the souls that hold up this earth-the land, and the people.

Impressive. The authors were not afraid to include women who were true revolutionarys--and who made a true difference in our lives.

Bicycle paths, co-existing with persons who enjoy walking and running.Naturally, as a very competitive person, Tillie Anderson often boasted about keepingclose to her racing physical ability throughout her life. Can you imagine the friendship born between aviation's Ruth Law and Tillie Andersonafter being introduced to each other.Fortunately, for further reading and research, Roger Gilles is the author of"Women On The Move: The Forgotten Era of Woman's Bicycle Racing"forthcoming in fall 2018 from the University of Nebraska Press. He teaches at Grand Valley State University.

Follow your dreams!

Cute Swedish tale

I used this book for classroom project so purchased a quantity. Kids loved the story and talking to the author during her visit with the students.

What a charming story! The author and illustrator combine their talents to create a wonderful, captivating story for all ages. Historically accurate, the story will educate and inspire readers in many ways. Simply amazing!

Such a great book about a strong girl that choses her own path. My girls love it! And my son too!

Tillie Anderson appeared to be a typical hard-working immigrant girl, laboring in a tailor shop. But when a man on a bicycle rides by the shop, she begins saving up her money to buy one of the new-fangled contraptions, despite warnings from her mother that bicycles aren't for ladies.Tillie wasn't interested in riding gracefully around a maypole, like other girls; she started training to get strong enough to ride fast, really fast. But there was a problem--her 19th century dresses. Soon Tillie designed herself a more aerodynamic bicycle outfit, one that scandalized the whole neighborhood. But Tillie didn't care if her friends and family thought she was "wicked"; she soon was entering her first cycling races, breaking women's records left and right and becoming the women's bicycle-racing champion of the world. She became famous, with poets writing her odes, bicycle companies looking for endorsements, and reporters wanting to interview her. Some male cyclists thought Tillie was "unwomanly," and doctors even examined her to see what the effects of all that hard exercise would be on a woman's body. They found her, not surprisingly, to be a "mass of muscle," and put a picture of her leg in the newspaper! Imagine how shocking in those days, when a mere glimpse of a woman's ankle was viewed as something sexy and forbidden. The reader can't help but be inspired by the story of this remarkable woman, a celebrity in the era before female athletes were accepted. Sarah McMenemy's bright and colorful gouache and collage illustrations are simply charming, and add immeasurably to the appeal of this tale. The opening end papers show the accessories of a proper Victorian lady, depicted in a soft, feminine lavender, while the end papers at the conclusion of the book feature a year-by-year breakdown of Tillie's records and her cycling victories, seen on a background of a vibrant lime green, decorated with trophies, Tillie on her bicycle, and swirls of speed. This is a great story to share with girls of all ages.

It's always fun for kids to read about passionate, determined, ahead-of-their-time individuals, and Tillie Anderson is the perfect example of that. In the 1890s, young ladies weren't supposed to get all hot and sweaty on bikes [or on anything else, for that matter], but that was just what Tillie wanted. She wanted to cycle and she wanted to win. She devised her own workouts during an era in which it was shocking for women to be seen exerting themselves in physical ways. Using her sewing skills, she devised her own bicycling outfit, and some of her neighbors stopped speaking to her, shocked at her for being unladylike. When she entered her first century race [a race of one hundred miles], she broke the women's record by a long shot. Winning more races, she became a star, and made some racing enemies who tried to stop her by putting tacks on the tracks. Calling herself Tillie the Terrible Swede, she even had a photograph of her muscular leg published in the newspaper. This was an entertaining, well told story of a young woman who was determined to do what she was passionate about in spite of societal disapproval. I loved the pacing, the anecdotes, and the retro illustrations. I would definitely recommend this juvenile biography to children in grades 1-4.

Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China, by Ezra F. Vogel

Review

“A masterful new history of China's reform era. It pieces together from interviews and memoirs perhaps the clearest account so far of the revolution that turned China from a totalitarian backwater led by one of the monsters of the 20th century into the power it has become today...Vogel has a monumental story to tell. His main argument is that Deng deserves a central place in the pantheon of 20th-century leaders. For he not only launched China's market-oriented economic reforms but also accomplished something that had eluded Chinese leaders for almost two centuries: the transformation of the world's oldest civilization into a modern nation...[An] illuminating book.”―John Pomfret, Washington Post“Ezra Vogel's new biography portrays Deng as not just the maker of modern China, but one of the most substantial figures in modern history...[A] meticulously researched book...Vogel knows China's elites extremely well, not least because of his years as an intelligence officer in East Asia for the Clinton administration. This book is bolstered by insider knowledge and outstanding sources, such as interviews with Deng's interpreters...The definitive account of Deng in any language. Vogel eloquently makes the case for Deng's crucial role in China's transformation from an impoverished and brutalized country into an economic and political superpower.”―The Economist“A lively portrait of the man...Vogel provides a wealth of fascinating material, from vivid accounts of Deng's political and organizational skills in reviving the economy in the mid-1970s to his up-and-down relations with Vietnam and its leaders. The author also offers astute insights into the reformist roles played by Hua Guofeng, Mao's immediate successor after his 1976 death, and by two of Deng's own associates, both ultimately purged by him, Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang. The book is at its best in portraying the tense interplay of personal relations and ambition among Mao's many lieutenants. On the surface, lockstep Communist ideology prevailed during Mao's rule, but behind the walls of Zhongnanhai, Beijing's central leadership compound, the dual drive for self-preservation and advancement fed a kind of political nihilism.”―Howard French, Wall Street Journal“When Chinese historians are able one day to ply their subversive trade without control or censorship, their judgment will surely be that their country should revere Deng Xiaoping way above his predecessor Mao Zedong...Ezra Vogel's massive biography assembles the case for Deng (1904-97) with narrative skill and prodigious scholarship.”―Chris Patten, Financial Times“Vogel has gone to enormous lengths to document his subject...Vogel's painstaking research provides plenty of fascinating detail. The description of the period after Tiananmen, for example--when the octogenarian was forced to call on a lifetime's accumulated political wiles to defeat an attempt by conservatives to almost completely reverse his reforms--is eye-opening. The pages in which Deng effectively threatens to have then Communist Party Secretary Jiang Zemin dismissed unless he throws his support behind renewing the reform drive are very nearly worth the price of the book alone...On the ways through which Deng set about the enormous task of rebuilding the gutted economy, shattered by decades of turmoil under Mao Zedong, Vogel is exhaustive.”―Simon Elegant, Time“Ezra Vogel's encyclopedic Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China is the most exhaustive English retelling of Deng's life. Vogel, an emeritus professor at Harvard, seems to have interviewed or found the memoirs of nearly every person who spoke with Deng, and has painstakingly re-created a detailed and intimate chronology of Deng's roller-coaster career.”―Joshua Kurlantzick, The Nation“A virtue of Vogel's book is that it collects and organizes a huge amount of material on the struggles within the elite power circles in China over several decades. In these accounts we learn how Deng tried to protect his allies and how he sought to undermine his enemies; he fell, rose, fell again, then rose again to the pinnacle position in the second generation of the Communist dynasty. Vogel's materials will be very useful to students of elite power struggles in China.”―Fang Lizhi, New York Review of Books“One of the virtues of Vogel's analysis is that he understands the thinking of Deng's rivals as well as he does Deng's own...Deng was infatuated with everything he viewed as modern, and wanted China to have it all. By entering into Deng's vision, Vogel helps readers see how the person who forged the world's most successful example of modernizing authoritarianism believed that such a combination would work.”―Andrew J. Nathan, New Republic“[An] exhaustive biography...Vogel's book is an encyclopedic look at Deng's career.”―Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore, The Independent“Deng was perhaps the most intriguing leader that I met while traveling with Mr. Blumenthal and President Jimmy Carter. I had to wait another 30 years, however, before a definitive biography would be written about Deng, arguably the most globally transformational leader of the 20th century. This year Ezra Vogel delivered it with Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China.”―Richard W. Fisher, Wall Street Journal

An interesting and very detailed book about a very interesting period in history. My main reservation is that I found the sequence of events confusing. It might have helped if there was a one or two page outline of what happened when.I had some reservations about the author's understanding of the relevant economics (my field), in particular the causes of the inflation that was a serious problem during parts of the period. For a different interpretation of the transition from socialism to capitalism, I recommend the book by Ronald Coase and Ning Wang. As they see it, neither Deng nor the other top people initially intended what happened—they were trying to get the bugs out of socialism, which they believed was a superior system. What they got right was the attitude that facts trump theory, with the result that when things they had neither intended nor approved of, such as the shift in agriculture to something close to private property (the household responsibility) system, initiated covertly from below not openly from above, turned out to work, they didn't stop them and eventually endorsed them.

Great biography of one of the most important historical figures of the late 20th century. It helps explain China's incredible rise from a backward agricultural society to one of the most advanced countries. As we - USA- wallow in the mud, we can learn from China, which turned itself around after years of bad and destructive policies, to lift its people out of poverty. Help, helps. Deng wasn't afraid to ask Japan's help dispite the long animosity between them. The go-it-alone approach (Mao) didn't work for China and isn't working for us. Deng's pre-Tiananmen square approach worked miracles. Great read.

A wonderful biography of Deng Xiaoping. There is more emphasis on the later as opposed to earlier years of his life. He was a survivor, having been purged twice by Chairman Mao Zedong. But Mao was not to be finished with Deng--keeping him on the backburner in case he needed his skills later on.The book provides background for his ultimate leadership of China. Deng was "taken down" during the Cultural Revolution, an enormous upheaval of Chinese society orchestrated by Mao. Deng and his family were essentially "exiled." When the time came for Mao to recall him and address excesses of the Cultural Revolution, Deng was slowly put back into harness for a short period of time. The time came when, again, Mao began to distrust Deng and even put the cold shoulder to Zhou Enlai, Mao's long time lieutenant. After a brief exile, Deng was again readmitted into a leadership role. The book then goes on to outline how, through political acumen and skills at coalition building, slowly became the # 1 leader, leaving Mao's successor out of power. The book has several areas where it explores Deng's career as leader. His role in upgrading the state of science and education is one focal point. There is a nice discussion of his reaching out to other countries to bring China up to speed in modernizing its economy, its military, and so on. The book also considers economic his economic policies, as Deng tried to jump start China's economy, based on fairly rapid growth (with the risk of inflation). His tactics to do this are described well. There is also discussion of his role in the military. He knew that the army was too large, too many senior officers had outlived their usefulness, and the war technology was not up to modern armies. How he was able to make progress in these (and other) sectors is fascinating. The book also addresses what appear to be some difficult choices that suggest some problematic decision making by Deng. His invasion of Vietnam is portrayed by Deng as a major factor in addressing Vietnam's aggressiveness. I think that the book's author might have had a somewhat more critical take on this event. Too, there is Deng's decision to bring the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to Beijing to put down the Tienanmen Square protests. After his retirement, his successors became, in Deng's mind, too cautious with the economy. There is a fascinating tale told of how he used his political skills to get China on a pathway toward more rapid growth. It shows Deng as a wily political figure, who even in his eighties could bend events toward his desires. All in all, a detailed biography, overall well done, of one of the most important figures in the late 20th century. The book might have been even better with a more critical assessment of Deng's work at some points. Still and all, an important work.

A great book, reads very smooth, Deng is criminally undercredited and undercovered in the United States. This covers all the trials and tribulations he endured before he became the paramount leader. It's a bit over apologist on Tiananmen Square, but otherwise reads pretty fair from my perspective.

I read this book prior to a tour of China a few months ago. I remember the old videos of China in the '60's and '70's showing the Chinese wearing Mao suits and riding bicycles. Now Beijing and Shanghai have freeways like L.A. filled with Audis, Buicks and other modern cars polluting the air. Much of the population dresses stylishly, particularly the young (many of them the "spoiled children" resulting from the one child law). They have a railroad that is an engineering marvel that goes to Lhasa, Tibet reaching an altitude of 16,000' on the way. Shanghai is the busiest port in the world and has spectacular skyscrapers. Do they have problems? Yes, huge ones including pollution of all sorts, lack of individual freedoms, a restless population among both the poor and well to do, rebellious minorities, and corruption throughout the ruling communist party. Still the changes in the last 30 years are astounding. No one man is responsible for all this but Deng must get the credit for leading the country to a more pragmatic economic path. No small task after the multiple debacles left behind by Mao and his ideological fantasies. It seems to be that the more ideological a political leader becomes the further he becomes separated from reality - whether the ideology is left or right. And if the ideological stance is extreme they soon begin killing people. Mao killed some by intent and millions by incompetent leadership and egotism. Deng and his supporters led hundreds of millions out of poverty. He was no angel and was part of a bad system throughout his long adult life. But his life is a great story and I would recommend this book strongly to anyone with an interest in modern China.

Deng Xiaoping is one of very few autocratic leaders in modern history that were able to drastically improve their country during their reign. Understanding how and why he was able to do that is critical, and this book does an excellent job of helping answer that question.
