Chapter OneBy all accounts, my parents approached the time of my birth with great anticipation. My father was certain that I'd be a boy and had worked out a deal with my mother: if the baby was a girl, she would name her, but a boy would be named John.Mother started thinking about names for her daughter. She wanted a name that would be unique and musical. Looking to Italian musical terms for inspiration, she at first settled on Andantino. But realizing that it translated as "moving slowly," she decided that she didn't like the implications of that name. Allegro was worse because it translated as "fast," and no mother in 1954 wanted her daughter to be thought of as "fast." Finally she found the musical terms con dolce and con dolcezza, meaning "with sweetness." Deciding that an English speaker would never recognize the hard c, saying "dolci" instead of "dolche," my mother doctored the term. She settled on Condoleezza.Meanwhile, my father prepared for John's birth. He bought a football and several other pieces of sports equipment. John was going to be an all-American running back or perhaps a linebacker.My mother thought she felt labor pains on Friday night, November 12, and was rushed to the doctor. Dr. Plump, the black pediatrician who delivered most of the black babies in town, explained that it was probably just anxiety. He decided nonetheless to put Mother in the hospital, where she could rest comfortably.The public hospitals were completely segregated in Birmingham, with the Negro wards--no private rooms were available--in the basement. There wasn't much effort to separate maternity cases from patients with any other kind of illness, and by all accounts the accommodations were pretty grim. As a result, mothers who could get in preferred to birth their babies at Holy Family, the Catholic hospital that segregated white and Negro patients but at least had something of a maternity floor and private rooms. Mother checked into Holy Family that night.Nothing happened on Saturday or early Sunday morning. Dr. Plump told my father to go ahead and deliver his sermon at the eleven o'clock church service. "This baby isn't going to be born for quite a while," he said.He was wrong. When my father came out of the pulpit at noon on November 14, his mother was waiting for him in the church office."Johnny, it's a girl!"Daddy was floored. "A girl?" he asked. "How could it be a girl?"He rushed to the hospital to see the new baby. Daddy told me that the first time he saw me in the nursery, the other babies were just lying still, but I was trying to raise myself up. Now, I think it's doubtful that an hours-old baby was strong enough to do this. But my father insisted this story was true. In any case, he said that his heart melted at the sight of his baby girl. From that day on he was a "feminist"--there was nothing that his little girl couldn't do, including learning to love football.

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a coworker. I was hesitant to purchase this book as I had mixed feelings of why I was encouraged to read this book but I am so glad I did. Up until this book I did not know much of condelezza's accomplished life or her struggles. This book also gave me a different political perspective on various government programs and concepts. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Ms. Rice's career or her political perspective. Great read!

I have always loved Condoleezza Rice. So I knew that I'd love this book. However, I was totally enthralled by her writing; this book was an easy and natural read. Not a single part was uninteresting. One would expect to discover large events in such an exceptional life, and Ms. Rice's life was filled with such accomplishments. You can understand how her family's support and her personality combined to produce the successful, lovely person she is. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed this book, I intend to read her other books. This was one of those experiences where I savored the reading and was very sorry to reach the end. I'm just a deer in her headlights.

This is an extraordinary book written by a woman I've long admired. CONDOLEEZZA RICE: A MEMOIR OF MY EXTRAORDINARY, ORDINARY FAMILY AND ME won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Youth/Teens. But even an old white geezer like me was able to dovetail its messages into my ordinary life and realize that special people are inspirations to be listened to and emulate.Reading for enjoyment is my most important goal. But learning from what I read is almost as important and sometimes ignored. In Dr. Rice's book I heard three important messages; cherish your parents and the heritage they have given you, keep your vision strong and focused, and don't give in to lesser urges that threaten to disrupt your life's journey. I have bumbled through three-quarters of a century skirting the edges of all three.I have followed the career of this beautiful and skilled woman, never failing to be moved by her lifework. Her remarkable rise to be Secretary of State for the United States of America is a story every person, young or old, should honor. Her spirit, willingness to accept any challenge, and ability to overcome obstacles of race, gender, and age are traits unlike any other I've witnessed. I see pride, devotion, and a certain pugnacious attitude towards criticism that has propelled her to the forefront of world leaders.We may never know the true story of her behind-the-scenes comportment. I sensed a certain resistance to interference with her priorities in her writing. I suspect that she voiced opinions that were so strong and well-grounded that opposition was seldom exercised. Her racial opinions are reasoned and forceful, yet easily accepted by all except those who don't really deserve a platform. And she plays the piano beautifully, a talent not easily attained. I feel certain that there was immense respect for her with perhaps undertones of resentment and jealousy. Those negative feelings were probably shed by Dr. Rice with graceful ease.This book is important, I think, because of the message it sends to people everywhere that there's really only one right way to pursue life, and that's with a dedication to doing the "right" thing. We all know in our hearts the definition of the "right" thing. Following that knowledge without wavering is the answer to being a happy and valued member of this world. It sounds lofty, but is certainly identifiable and within reach. But it does take effort, something on which Dr. Rice didn't skimp.A big part of that effort is maintaining the love and involvement of your family. Dr. Rice's love of her parents is presented in the strongest and most unapologetic expression I've ever read. My grandson and I used this Bible last night to work on his Awana Bible Study. It is such an awesome Bible. I wish I had one for myself. So many pictures, lists and details. Just beautiful. He is so pleased.

Does Jesus love me? and other questions and answers. Lot time I hear a kid say How do I pray? It's in this Bible also. Wonderful Bible a child should have. Love it.

It also has sections throughout on Life in Bible times, People in Bible Time, Did you know, and Words to Treasure. And each picture and section is teaching our children and grandchildren about Jesus. I absolutely love this Bible! It's such an interactive Bible with so much that will encourage children to read and enjoy it. It's filled with wonderful pictures that will make your child smile. I love the penguins, polar bears and other cute polar animals used throughout - they are adorable and eye-catching! The translation used for this Bible is the NIV which makes it easier for children to read, enjoy and understand.I also like that the text is easy on the eyes to read and not too small. I had no trouble reading the text and I can't read really small text any longer. I think this is a huge plus and children don't really like small text either.One of my favorite things are the "Word to Treasure" squares throughout the Bible that pick special Scriptures from the pages you're on. This would be a good way to encourage children to memorize Scriptures. They are not long passages so they would be easy for a child to memorize.Another favorite part of this Bible are the full page color pictures that ask questions or give your child more information about a topic. For instance, there is on on Scriptures to look up if you're feeling a certain way and another one about Getting To Know Jesus and His Life. These put into one page important information that your child can refer to. There are full color maps in the back as well so that they can look to see where the certain stories are taking place or see where Jesus was.This is such a wonderful Bible and I love it! I think a child would love it, too! I've really enjoyed going through it and reading it and I love all the information inside. The recipes are great and uniquely detailed. However, there are very few photos and the recipes call for a tremendous amount of oil. The first time we cook a recipe, we start out cutting the recommended amount of oil in half.That said, we have nevertheless made great use of it. We have cooked 13 if the recipes within three months. Every single one was a winner. You can’t say that about many cookbooks.

Long ago I had this in hardcover, and a housemate left it on the stove and turned an electric burner on under it! Drama ensued, but everything turned out alright -- except the book was ruined and she said (years ago mind you) she couldn't find a replacement copy.Get this. It's delightful. I really don't enjoy the tone of the author, who is colonial as all get out, but the recipes and techniques are fantastic.Worth it just for the wonton soup recipe. You will become highly suspect of most wontons after this, lol.We used to have wonton parties and I'd teach my friends to make them, and put them up in freezer bags. So good!

Really good spicy recipes. Includes detailed instructions on making various spicy sauces, which you could combine with any meat or veggies you like or have around the kitchen. Get a cooking shovel as recommended in the book, it's a great tool.

Man, I love this book. The recipies are kinda long, but it's easy enough to follow. My fav in the book - 'Pock Marked Ma's Bean Curd'. The one recipie that opened my eyes to the fact tofu can be really, really tastey when the dish is well spiced and given the time to absorb the flavors around it (I think its even better and hotter the next day.)The hot and sour soup is also excellent -- more like a stew and completely unlike anything I've had in a run of the mill 'chinese food' place.My sister picked this book up first and one thing she regularly altered was cutting the oil in the recipies, about in half in most instances. Also, for recipies that ask for ground pork, grinding pork loin steaks (fat trimmed) gets you excellent flavor but less fat.When a recipie asks for fresh water chestnuts, I'd suggest not using canned. The flavor is completely different. Fresh jicima might be a better substitute if you can't get fresh water chestnuts.

One of the few cookbooks I've read cover to cover. I found this cookbook after cooking an eggplant dish from another Szechwan cookbook, Land of Plenty by Fuchsia Dunlop, that I found underseasoned for Szechwan cuisine. This sent me on a search for a Szechwan cookbook with more robust recipes. That's when I found Mrs. Chiang's Szechwan Cookbook. The first recipe I tried was Chicken and Cucumbers because I had a cucumber that I needed to use. Nothing wimpy about this recipe: 10 garlic cloves and 4 hot red peppers. Great depth of flavor. I am going to be trying a lot of recipes in this book.

If you love to cook and like Chinese-Szechwanese food, you will love this book.There is great clarity in the writing and instructions, and the story behind the book and Mrs. Chiang are a joy to read.There has not been a single recipe I did not enjoy - so far I have made about 1/3 of the recipes listed. Some are just excellent and addictive - like Bon Bon Chicken, Pork in fish style, Anise Chicken. Be prepared to make lots of trips to your (Asian) store, as you will be going through a LOT of star anise, szechwan peppers, ginger, scallions, garlic, etc.. And try to find a good source of pork.Hard to believe it has been out of print for so long. I have Dunlop's book as well, which is very good, but a bit more convoluted. I would recommend this book first, then Dunlops Land of Plenty.

I am an Executive Chef with an extensive collection of cookbooks, and this is by far by favorite. This is the single best work on the subject I have ever read. There is no finer Chinese cookbook available. A little dated, perhaps, but still invaluable. I enjoyed this one so much I read it novel-like from cover to cover and refer to it frequently. I can't say enough good about this book.

I do a great deal of Chinese cooking and this cookbook has some of the more authentic recipes found in Westernized cookbooks. With the online and increasing local availability of true Chinese ingredients and sauces really great, close to authentic Chinese cooking can be done at home - and if you do you should have this cookbook. My reference to authentic is from trips to SE Asia.

Trina Schart Hyman (1939 - 2004) received one Caldecott Medal and three Caldecott Honors during her distinguished career. From the age of four she knew that she would become an illustrator. I had read others reviews and I am not one to shy away from traditional versions of fairy tales. In fact, I prefer them. But, the addition of the gun and the description of "slashing" was a bit too much for me to read to my preschool class. I did see it is suggested for 5 and up. I would probably say 7 or 8. The illustrations were beautiful, but it was not very well written for keep a child's interest regardless of age. I will have to keep l looking for a good one.

A bautiful book. note, its a longer tale and more appropriate for 5 and older. Beautiful pictures and sticks true to the original storyline. If you don't mind the sight of a hunter with a gun then you will be ok with this book.

The art work is better than most. There is several non-traditional elements to this version. IE the woodsman calls the wolf "sinner"Before he dispatches him and cuts out granny and Lil' hood... The inclusion of the word evokes a moral tone and seems like a non-sequitur. IT IS a morality tale but the wolfs morality should be static, and needs to be static, to dialogue about Little red's trail obedience. Weither he "sins" (missing the mark in archery) or not he is a WOLF who eats red meat, it's his nature. SEE the title 'little red riding hood and the sweet little wolf'

I'm a nanny. I got this for my kids for Halloween. I remember reading an edition almost exactly like this one when I was little! Its the perfect amount of "scary" for my kids, but might not be a great fit for all young children, depending on their sensitivity. This is the traditional tale of the wolf eating the grandmother and the girl and the huntsman cutting them out of his belly, complete with pictures. It was fine for us, but I know some families for whom this would have been "too much too soon."

Parents vary on the version of Red Riding Hood they want to share with their kids. So, let me say up front, I wanted the one where the grandma gets eaten (not hides in the closet); where Red Riding Hood gets eaten (not rescued at the very last minute) and where the wolf gets killed (not runs away). If this is NOT for you, pick another version. Personally, I get mad when grandma hides in the closet (what....and doesn't jump out to intervene between her granddaughter and a ravenous wolf? She's either deaf or heartless......) I think Red Riding Hood needs to get eaten (natural consequences are great learning lessons.) And unless the wolf is killed and hauled off by the woodsman to be hung on his door, how do you know for SURE that he'll never, ever, ever return? My daughter is 3 and this is one of her very favorite bedtime stories. The illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman are lovely, with little homages to her Mimi hid within.

Beautifully illustrated classic story book! My 2.5 year old daughter loves it. I like throwing extra commentary of what can happen to a young girl if she does not obey mommy's directions! LOL

I read through the reviews and product details and was led to believe that this would be the book and disc. We only received the disc. I can't figure out where to get the book now. We love the story and wish we had the book as well. I would love to rate this item higher, but the misleading information prevents me from doing so. If you plan on purchasing the book and read along disc. This item is not that.

Don't talk to strangers unless you want very bad things to happen.This is the fairytale as it was told to me as a child. The author/illustrator tells it like it is and doesn't sugar coat it. When i was in elementary school i fell in love with her illustrations in Snow White, so much so that i checked the book out of the library often. One day it was checked out by someone who never brought it back. I found & bought that book decades later and relived my fascination with the beautiful, dark pictures which mirrored the rendition of the fairytale. I am thrilled to find other tales illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman and happy to add this one to my collection.
