This is #1 in The Miami Jones Mystery series.I was given a free copy of this and I am reviewing because of the free copy.I felt the editing could have been better. Words were missing and a few misspelled words were found. Perhaps because it was an e-book, the editing wasn’t well done. For me this was way too much like Myron Bolitar and Win. I also didn’t think things were very well defined in the book. Miami just ends up places and you wonder why he made the jump to there. Anyway, that is the way I was reading this. I see retribution for those guys in the book that needed it, like Win does for Myron. We even had the mob in on this and that didn’t seem to be defined either. We were to assume this?I am giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. I would have liked more originality. I did like the setting as I do live in Florida. Hopefully the next book will be better and not so much like Harlan Coben.

My top literary detectives are Spenser and Travis McGee. They follow a moral code that is far more important to them than what their clients want, they are tough, they are funny and they inhabit a world filled with interesting characters. Put these two guys together, and you have Miami Jones, the protagonist of Stiff Arm Steal. I don't mean to suggest that A.J. Stewart is the next coming of Robert Parker of John D. MacDonald. It's way too early for that. But he's off to a good start. In short, if you like good detective stories, give this one a chance. Jones is a compelling, fully realized character, his supporting cast is interesting and believable, his wise-cracking is top-notch, the South Florida setting is a ripe one for story-telling and Stewart pulls off this first story in the series as if he has been writing this character for a long time. Great stuff.

I went through Amazon's free kindle books. I picked out eight books. I tried to read four with out good results. Then I started this tale. I really like Miami Jones, Ron, and the Deputy Danielle. The characters have wit and personality. The story was interesting. I recommend this book and this author.

The dialogue is good but the plot is weak and it moves at a very slow pace until the final 70 pages. Also, does anyone proof read anymore? Examples include "to much" rather than "too much". Also, there is a reference to a former MLB player and his name is spelled correctly the first time but mispelled every subsequent time. These are just few of the annoying mistakes in this book. I doubt I will I read anymore offerings from this author. There are many other authors in this genre to choose from.

Stewart is a good writer and he has a likable cast of characters who act and speak convincingly. I was reading along having a fine time when it happened -- the really preposterous coincidence. Unbelievable, implausible, ridiculous. It was like tripping over something or stubbing a toe. Annoying. Embarrassing. Yet the story moved confidently along and the characters continued to be believable and likable. Except that he expected me to be a little stupid and a lot gullible, Mr. Stewart kept me entertained for most of the book. However, I won't read any other installments in the series as I feel disrespected. I guess the theory is that readers today aren't really that smart. Hmmm.

I wouldn’t call Miami Jones a “Spenser, with an s” or a Jack Reacher. The Robert B. Parker and Lee Child characters spend time telling the reader what it means to be a bad-ass. Jones is too laid back to be a bad-ass. At the same time, he’s not going to take any more grief than he has to.Miami Jones doesn’t have Spenser's’ “lit. wit”. Jones is a smart-ass of a different color. He knows he has to play the game. However, his lead is a bit longer than most.I like the character. Enough to have purchased “Offside Trap”.I can't say anymore without giving the reader too much info but, there is a turning point in the book where one feels Jones needs to step up to the plate, and he does. I found myself feeling this character deserves resolution more than Jones' client.I don’t normally bring up typos or anything grammar related. There is always someone around eager enough to tell the world his grammar is better than the author's.One thing though and I hope it’s a typo. A sentence on page 210, Kindle version, reads, “Hands better suited to light opera then pro football.”“Then” should be “than”.These days, “then” is used more and more where “than” should be used. One sees this so many times, one thinks it’s an epidemic.I'll let Grammar Girl take over.""Than" conveys a comparison. "Then" has an element of time. For example, it can mean "next" or "at that time."" From, Mignon Fogarty, Grammar Girl. at Quick and Dirty Tricks, online.

These stories never get old. Miami Jones joins a pretty big group of former athletes who wind up as private investigators (or lawyers) and who are constantly finding themselves in trouble.Miami Jones does a good job of being one of these guys and A.J. Stewart does a pretty good job of weaving a storyline that's fun to read and easy to follow. And the cast of characters is well constructed as well, with flaws as well as good things going for them. And the way the characters work with each other makes for a well done beach read (even if the players in the book are the ones going to the beach instead of you.)This was book number one in the Miami Jones series, but was done well enough to get THIS reader interested in other storylines. If you like cop thrillers, this series will probably be a good place for you to spend some quality time reading. It works for me.
