Kid Presidents: True Tales of Childhood from America's Presidents (Kid Legends), by David Stabler Doogie Horner

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—With cartoonish illustrations that will attract fans of Jeff Kinney's "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and Rachel Renée Russel's "The Dork Diaries," this informative offering leaves no presidential childhood rock unturned. Children will enjoy the parallels of these presidential lives and their own, from Franklin Roosevelt's helicopter mother to Hebert Hoover's friendships with Native Americans to Barack Obama's tumultuous years in Indonesia. Disorganized kids will be happy to read that John F. Kennedy was given a scathing report card that once stated that he "can seldom locate his possessions." Kids will especially enjoy the section on pranks pulled by previous presidents. Oddly, this book is not organized chronologically, nor is each segment broken down into any rational sequence. Overall, the style is funny and lighthearted. Being a kid isn't always easy, even for those on the path for greatness, like many of these men. The further reading at the end of book provides a nice resource for those who want to learn more about their favorite resident of the Oval Office. Give this fun and accessible title to "Who Was…" series (Penguin) fans or reluctant readers who enjoys history.—Keith Klang, Port Washington Public Library, NY

"Mom, this book is really good!" My daughter is in second grade, and she loves this book. This non-partisan book presents Presidents from all sides of the political spectrum: Reagan, Obama, Lincoln, and more. It even debunks the George Washington cherry-tree story, using humor to do so.The full-color book is filled with terrific illustrations, and the pages are not text-dense, making for easier reading for elementary students. The hardcover binding would make this a durable addition to a classroom or library.

I homeschool my ten year old son. This year I wanted to teach him about U.S. Presidents. Each day we read about one of the presidents (from another president book) and then read a passage from this Kid Presidents book. This book is funny, inspiring, informative, and extremely entertaining. Especially for my son. He looks forward to the fun facts we read about each president every day. If you're looking for a fun read for any kids interested in U.S. History, I highly recommend this book.

This book is full of relatable stories that help humanize our presidents for kids. We also have Kid Athletes, which is on heavy rotation in our house. We started reading them to our daughter when she was 5 but I think that she will continue to enjoy these books for several more years, especially when she starts learning about these important figures in school. These are our go-to gifts for birthdays. Yes, I am one of those awful adults that gift kids books for their birthdays and Christmas.

I got this book for my 8 year old because he loves presidents. The illustrations and stories are fun. However, he isn't able to read it all by himself. It's not a beginning reader type of book. And there is more text than I thought there would be. It's fine, but it's going to be a book we'll have to read to him until he's a bit older and can read it alone.

Ok, my son is 9 years old and loves History and has had this book for a couple of years. He LOVED learning facts about the presidents growing up. Some are very funny and sweet. I actually enjoyed it as well. This is one of my favorites, and there are several others that are must haves if your kids enjoy history.

This was one of those collections of information that my reluctant readers would just eat up. It doesn't linger on any one president's story for too long, and it's just enough to constitute a good source of information for kids. I'd happily recommend this book to my students if they were in the market for nonfiction. Both fun and informative.

I don't always leave a review for books. I think it might be a personal matter. However, my 2nd grader loved this book. She picked it up and read it herself. She found it very interesting. Very age appropriate.

This fascinating, fast read will take you through the lives of presidents when they were kids. It goes through their friendships, family relations, tough times, and fun times.

This is a really cool book! I was looking for a nonfiction book to read with my third grade LD students and happened upon this little gem. I love the stories - they are very accessible, not too long, but not too short. They keep the readers' attention and engage kids in conversation about the presidents. A really fun find!
