If you are looking for a book to provide the ins and outs concerning refractors, stop here. And if you like to read a well written book would like to acquire knowledge concerning refracters, you have the right book.Unlike a lot of offerings in this area, this book is well organized, well illustrated, and well written. We are provided with a good, abridged history lesson on the subject of the refractor. Then the writer gets a bit technical without losing the reader. He explains how the refractor works, the inherant problems concerning that type of scope, and how those problems were addressed by various craftmen. He then provides reviews of various scopes.Nothing is perfect, so I suppose there had to be problems. And it was at this point some strange issues appeared. I am somewhat confused by the scopesvthe writer choose to review. Now, this maybe due to the approach and style of writing the author choose to use, an informal approach to the subject. None the less he neglects some scopes that I feel should have been included in his reviews. An example is the 90mm long tube achromate. The 90mm is a very popular choice for a beginners instrument and also for observing planets. Yet this scope is not mentioned. On the other hand, he spends an inordinate amount of time on some scopes that are so rare it is doubtful they should rate that much written space. This approach was confusing to me and forced me to backtrack through the book to see what I must have missed. Unfortunately, I have not missed a thing.It’s hard to see the writers purpose given the inconsistancies in his choice concerning the scopes he choose to review and the space allotted to each scope. It would have been helpful if he had provided some type of chart or list with some stats. Even more to be point, shorter more concise reviews of a wider scope selection would have been more pleasing to the reader.Even with those misgivings I still rate this as a very good book. You seldom find an offering in this area that provides this level of info.Do, Anyone wanting to know more about refractors or would like a nice short reference work, would do good to get this book.

Neil English has a passion for refractors and he isn't afraid to sing its praises!Nowadays, it would seem that refractors have taken a back seat to more popular, compact designs like the Schmidt-Cass, Maksutov, or amateur astronomy's workhorse, the Newtonian. But Mr. English pleads the case for the iconic refractor and the quality of its still superior images. He covers every design type with in-depth chapters ranging from; the history of the refractor, the traditional classical f/15 refractor, instruments of faster ratios, special dispersion glass, apochromatics, and the future of the refracting telescope. English also devotes chapters to the refractor's peculiarity of design and presents a strong case as to why the venerable, classical f/15 refractor still reigns supreme. The closing chapter covers the classical refractor's more recent popularity and quiet comeback.Neil English loves refractors and his enthusiasm sometimes leaps off the page. But, his work is methodical and he backs his observations and examples with hard evidence, calling on optical experts and professional astronomers to rally for his cause.If you are a hardcore refractor man, Neil English is preaching to the choir. If you are considering purchasing a refractor, this book is a revelation. If you like telescopes, this book is simply a joy to read.I have been a dedicated refractor owner, and user, for more than 34 years. Looking through a long focus, "classical" refractor for the first time is an experience that is truly sublime. And, it stays with some amateur astronomers for a lifetime.

Books in this series are about 10%-20% too expensive, but the size of this publisher's market is small, and given the quality of the information, the images and the author's style, I would definitely purchase this book again. I was planning to read it through systematically, but my curiosity for what came next drove me rapidly forward, and now I must go back and move ahead with pen in hand, underlining what's important for me. The author details carefully the differences between models and types of optical tubes that virtual beginners like me might too easily gloss over or overlook entirely. Refractors are but one of the three basic types of telescope; newcomers should learn about all three types before making a serious purchasing decision. This text belongs in every amateur astronomer's library.

If you are a refractor affectionado you will love this book. I have used telescopes for over 45 years and I thought I knew everything about refractors and I was wrong (e.g. defocus tolerance and the affects on seeing). The book has a breezy writing style that is upbeat and fun to read. Mr. Neil English is passionate about refractors and it is infectious! My only complaint is that the book places too much emphasis on reviewing telescopes (which will become outdate over time) and I would like to seen more emphasis on testing and optical performance theory. To the author's credit he did an excellent job explaining complex optical theory in a very digestable manner. A few typos were noted and some of the graphs were hard to decipher (due to lack of a color legend). Most of the books emphasis is on visual observing and not digital imaging. Some readeres may not agree with the author that the old telescopes were in many cases better than the new genera of APOs. I do agree with the author's statement that a properly made achromat with a slow f/ratio is really hard to beat for depth of focus, sharpness and contrast. I have seen it with my own eyes! When the book came to an end I found myself wanting more.

I love the patterns in this book. Great color schemes! I thought it was very easy tracing these patterns onto fusible web, adhering to fabric, and then placing on my quilt top. I made a 50" x 50" quilt in a weekend utilizing 14 of the butterfly designs, and everyone that saw it raved.

This is one of the best books on management out there. Like many officers, Pagonis thinks a little to highly of himself (in my opinion) but it is not overwhelming. I wish he explained in greater detail how his 6" x 9" card system worked because I didn't fully understand it (could have just been me though).This is probably the best treatise on the subject of military logistics out there. As a vet suffering from PTSD, I have met many young vets who have returned from the Mid East who are angry at the waiting they had to do before going into battle. I have shared this book with them and they have come back telling me "I didn't know it was that complicated". This book is a testament to all the behind the scenes work that is necessary to field an army.

Book arrived in excellent shape. Very pleased. This was a replacement for my library as this book has great value to future military logisticians.

Had been meaning to get this book for a long time. Finally have. Will be used when I get back into Logisitics Leadership

There are not a lot of books related to Army logistics out there and this is a great read. I would suggest it for any logistician. It is an easy ready and has some great information.

First, let's clear something up. This is NOT a textbook on logistics, nor is it a history of the first Iraq war. Rather, it is a book about effective leadership. It is also about change management. If you want to improve your leadership skills, then I highly recommend this book. I first read it in 1995, as I write this review in 2010, the notes I took then still resonate.If you are faced with a monumental task with a short timeline, then this book should be relevant to you.For example, General Pagonis writes about the importance of building a vision, acting upon it, setting goals related to it, then getting your directs to set objectives that support those goals.He also discusses the importance of communication. Although the book was written long before the rise of social media, his points about communication are still valid.But then he goes further and covers points I don't often seen discussed in other books or media.All in all, a good investment, especially since it's available in paperback now.

Great story about supply chain management during the Persian Gulf War

I read this book during the time I was doing my MBA. Many of the sources in the course of study having to do with production management referenced this text. Consequently I read it of my own volition. The techniques and tactics that Gus Pagonis detail are invaluable to anyone dealing with mentoring subordinates, coordinating multivariate product flows and needing to beat Murphy at his own game.I bought another copy for my nephew who (as of this writing) is now a first Lt in the US Army.

I didn't know as much as I would have liked about Passover, and these books were extremely helpful in becoming more familiar with it. Finding new perspectives on the traditional story and ritual was an exciting way to go about learning, and it really helped me connect to the holiday. In addition, the books just provide a great take on women's roles and accomplishments today. I would recommend this book and the Women's Passover Companion to everyone, whether you have thought a lot about Passover and are looking for fresh insights, or are just starting out and looking for meaning in the traditions of Passover.

This was an incredible book. The contributors were very passionate about Judaism and women's issues and incredibly well informed about Passover and connected themes. Some of the pieces were funny and some were serious, some were academic and other were more relaxed, creating a divere mix. Love this book already bought 3 times in the last month after my first buy at a bookstore. Great gift for young parent activists who want to impart good values to their kids.

This book is perfect!It is a compilation of photos and quotes from children that attended the Women's March in January 2017. It goes through issues like equality, democracy, activism and feminism and avoids all political opinions. It sticks to the core issues without turning it into a debate over party lines or presidents.For being a book with such small dimensions, it is full of inspiring and amazing quotes, explanations of key words and photos. I highly recommend it as a book to read to elementary children and up to connect at their levels on these topics and encourage them to be the voice of their generation.

Used to be indoctrination starts at College-University level. Now they're starting them as early as 5 years. Check them out from your local indoctrination library.In one page, it states: "If there is a mess, it's our job to fix it." Good enough, and so on the opposite page, a child is carried aloft on an adult's shoulder with a child holding aloft a sign with nothing in it---just a bunch of scribbles. In one page, it states: "Adults are harder to convince than kids." Exactly right! It is so much easier to convince these kids about what they know nothing about!! After all, adults pay taxes and the vast majority of them still don't believe in the tooth fairy!Then a picture of a really small child who most likely can barely talk is now holding up a sign stating "WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED." ??! On another page, a toddler is holding a sign "I DISSENT" (what could a 5 year old possibly be dissenting about?) then another page states "Fight For Those Who Don't Have A Voice." (which is good...millions of animals are used and horribly abused, but I doubt this book is what it is after.)Now we know what all those Californian gender studies majors are up to. I think books like these are meant for 18-50 yr. old far-left adults...with the mentality of a 5-9 yr old. They even mention feminism. But would books like these point out that females have more rights and "heaps & heaps" more privileges in countries like Canada and the USA? NOooo! Heaven forbid!!This book is a perfect example why Liberalism is a mental illness. Many Americans like to claim that they live in the freest country in this planet, but how free are we really when the very young are being mind controlled even before they're able to actually write?

WOW. I can't imagine how this was published. It is terrible, and it encourages kids to resist, campaign, and just be angry. Why not let kids be kids and form their own opinions when they are more mature? Let kids read fun books and enjoy life.

I absolutely love this little book that shares photos of children at the Women's March on Washington, along with quotes from kids and explanations of words such as "feminist" and "democracy". Many times when a novel portrays every day life circumstances and relationships it reads slow and, unless saved by incredible diction, is a bore. Cherokee America manages to both portray real people living in real times and still COMPEL you to keep turning the page.Verble has meticulously researched this book and it shows. But it never feels like you've suddenly been plunged into a dry lecture about 19th century Cherokee society. She indeed shows and doesn't tell. From beautiful things like how a question is answered with a story from the past to how Tribe is an entity both past and present to ugly things like the life of blacks at the time within the Nation to the limits placed on women (black women more so than Cherokee women). In all ways, it was balanced, nuanced, and empathetic. I enjoyed it greatly!

This wonderful novel is full of fully-detailed characters, suspenseful and exciting plot, and beautiful descriptions. It is a revealing look into a too-often ignored time and place in American history. As her essay on lithub.com (and the novel's afterword) reveals, the story is based on the author's family history -- one can only hope for more from her in the future!

Some books need a bit of patience as the author slowly unfurls the complexity of the story and of the characters on the written page. Cherokee America is one such book that demands the reader follow the lead of the author as she fills in details that a quicker narration might leave unexplored.The main story is that of Check, a strong willed, soon to be widowed mother of five headstrong young boys who faces life with calm resolution and intelligence. But, more than simply the story of one character, the book gives each of the many characters in the book their own voice and their own view on the events as they unfold. The threads of events are carried forward from the point of view of changing protagonists and the cumulative effect is a story of real depth and beauty. This does mean that you need to keep track of everyone and this can be bit of a hurdle as you slowly get to know who's who in this massive tale.The story takes a long time to get moving but, if you can be a patient reader, is it a rewarding one. The first actual crisis doesn't arrive until around page 100 and there were times when I wondered if the book would simply be a poetic tribute to the life of the Cherokee people after the Civil War. However, the events begin to ramp up and, with the plethora of characters, it takes a good fifty pages or so just to keep the different characters straight in your head, so perhaps launching into full swing at page 100 makes sense! By the time the first crisis occurs, you have begun to care deeply for each player even as their flaws and frustrations and, in case of the young men, their shenanigans are exposed. The intertwined familial lines and histories are complex and often difficult to keep track of and I hope that the final book (I read a galley) will have a family tree to help the reader keep things straight! What does come through are the strong connections and loyalties between the families that are passed down in oral histories through the generations.The story is based on real people and it left me wanting to learn more about these histories that so little has been written about. I have not yet read Verble's Pulitzer prize winning book 'Maud's Line' but will definitely be seeking it out after this marvelous book.

The cover art for Cherokee America drew me in before I picked up the book. A lone woman on the prairie, with the wind tumbling through her shawl. It evoked that same sense of loneliness and longing as Andrew Wyeth's painting, Christina's World. I wanted to know this woman's story, and after reading the synopsis was hooked. Cherokee America opens in a late 1800's small town, as Check (Aunt Check to most folks) runs errands at the local general store. This simple setting, the hub center of the town, serves as a surprisingly perfect opening. Not only do we get a solid sense of Check's no-nonsense way of viewing her neighbors and townsfolk, but also her compassion for the downtrodden. I felt like I was there with Check as she rescues a dying infant's life.This is the Cherokee Nation after the Civil War, after the land was ravaged for supplies from the armies, and the people are still attempting to cover the scars, both over the land and within themselves. There are people like Sanders, who walked the Trail of Tears and came out of the War with next to nothing, besides two wives named Nancy. There's Puny, a former slave whose grief turns into a desperate quest for gold and a way to change his circumstances. And Check, who misses her Tennessee home, who is raising her children with a dying husband waiting at home. They keep to the Bible, while not wholly believing in or trusting all it represents. Claiming the whites' religion hasn't saved them from walking the trail to this new land, and it can't save Check's abolitionist husband an early grave. Still, Check keeps her farm running and family together as best she can. Rather than split into chapters, the book is divided by titled scenes, interconnecting the story in a refreshing and fluid way. While usually told from Check's perspective, we also see through the eyes of secondary and even minor characters like Check's sons, Sanders and the two orphaned boys. As the story unfolds, pieces of a larger puzzle come together in an exciting way. The author, a member of the Cherokee Nation herself, uses the Cherokee alphabet and language through the book, which lends another layer of immersion to Verble's story. I loved learning about Cherokee culture, alongside the darker aspects on both sides of the Civil War and all that came after. Big events often have small beginnings.
