I read This House of Sky not long after it was heralded as an award winning book by a Montana author. Then I reread it several times. I loved the story--all true. I loved the time period, a Montana of my parents' young adulthood, depicting the hard life just post-Depression, post-WWII. But most of all, I loved the lyrical language of Doig's straightforward presentation of the story of his life.He tells how his father approached his disapproving mother-in-law to help raise six-year-old Ivan after Ivan's mother succumbed to her life-long struggle with asthma. This most odd of couples worked together on ranches with scarce food or water for the stock, fought the weather in terrible plains blizzards, thunderstorms and droughts, drove sheep, ran a restaurant, did anything they could do to keep a roof over their heads. Even if sometimes it was only canvas. The two antagonists worked as a team because Ivan needed them to be a team. They gritted their teeth and tolerated one another for so long, that at last they learned to cherish each other.When I bought This House of Sky for my Kindle, I was facing tough times, frightened by the family budget, terrified of losing our home. So I read it once again to remind myself I might lose my house, as Ivan's father did several times, but like him, I would never lose my home. Home is family. No matter what, family is all that ever really matters. Just roll up your sleeves and start over again. Good advice in any era, any run of hard times. Any family.This House of Sky is Doig's masterpiece. Though he has written several other good books of fiction, I doubt anything will ever match the drama and raw emotion of his own life. Read it. It will change you. KL

The author writes beautifully about the raw and hardscrabble lives of real people in early 20th century southwest Montana. This is a real American story that should remind us of the greatness of forgotten "little people" who continue to help build this country. Doig's writing is a joy in and of itself to read, and he tells his story in such a way that it touches the human soul without being maudlin. Those of us who live spoiled and privileged lives by comparison to those people, need to stop and ask ourselves if we would be up to doing anything near what they had to do in order to survive.

I read this wonderful autobiography after reading Doig's extraordinary novel The Last Bus to Wisdom. .I won't stop reading until I've read everything he wrote... each book appears to be an examination of a puzzle piece of a life lived in one of the last frontiers. Can't recommend highly enough!

Having grown up in rural Idaho with a part of my family ranching very much as described here, I relate to his story in a very personal way. This is a remarkable telling of life in the rural intermountain west. The mountains. The land. The life. The work. Great piece of literature.

This is the third copy I've purchased after reading it myself. It's a wonderfully written autobiographical tale of a family's life in harsh rural Montana, and a man's remembrances of how the land shaped their existence and how the lives of three generations interacted and struggled together to overcome the obstacles life put in front of them.

Powerful, passionate and genuine...Ivan Doig has always been a great storyteller and his memoir is no exception.Motherless at the age of six, Ivan’s upbringing was a checkerboard of existence. His father worked various Montana ranches to preserve the continuity with his son. Most of these ranches were inaccessible in winter, so to secure Ivan’s schooling he would stay with whoever was obliging in the nearest town, or with his maternal grandmother in some ramshackle of a country house if the situation presented itself...seeing his father only on weekends when weather permitted and during the summer months. This father/son relationship was absolute.It is oftentimes said that landscapes can shape the human fabric and spirit...these Montana prairies, mountains and valleys did just that for Doig, his father, grandmother and everyone else in these environs.Sadly, Doig passed on in 2015...but his books will live on.A compelling read.

Most of us don't know much about real life in the American West. So, it took a while for this book to grow on me. First, being my hurried self, I wondered if I really wanted to read about the trying, demanding life of sheepherders in Montana. I was looking for excitement and insight into life or at least the land in the West. Then, as I kept reading, I found it. I realized that the life of Charlie Doig, his son, and his mother-in-law, held within it, the greatness, wisdom and love that only a few of us get to experience. And, although, I'm still not sure, I think that the greatness of the land around them somehow inspired them to be their best. They lived free of modern-day electronic gadgets, the race to make it to the top, and the ultimate disappointment and detachment that come from the worst cases of that kind of life. Instead, they were given the time to focus only on the next day and the world around them, including a few, manageable people they could understand and connect with in a meaningful way. There are surely lessons here for all of us and inspiration too.

I loved this book. This House of Sky is an elegantly written memoir about Ivan Doig's hardscrabble upbringing in rural Montana that often soars into sheer poetry. It's also a love letter to his father and grandmother, who transformed an uneasy alliance into a relationship of deep affection. If you enjoy fine literary craftsmanship, you'll find this a memorable read. It's the kind of book you won't want to put down yet won't want to finish. It's that good.

Beautiful book well worth adding to any glass collector's library.Good photos of glassware produced during the depression period and beyond that doesn't get included in Depression Glass books. Good detailed photos of various crystal patterns that would be hard to tell apart without a resource like this. That I got a bargain on a nearly mint book was a bonus.

Being in the hobby of collecting glass as I am for over a decade, becomes alot more interesting when you have a fantastic book like this to refer to.This book offers tremendous return for your dollar as far as what it gives you. Concisely written, easy to read, well planned and designed value guides on the same page with the pattern you are researching, are ideal. The number of pictures you get of any pattern is by far, more detailed than any other reference I have seen. The number of pieces made that are listed ALSO seem more complete. You will see a wide array of all the patterns in all the colors which is incredible as well. As much as I am a fan of Gene Florences' wonderful glassware references of which I have many, THIS beats his Elegant Glassware of The Depression Era. It just is more complete. Zipped thru this one rather fast for me (and I am reading another book). My 2nd Bosch novel, as I am reading them in the order they were published. Got hooked on the Harry Bosch character thanks to Amazon Prime. Loved Season 1 and wanted to knock out several Bosch books before I tackle Season 2 (and maybe wait around until Season 3 is announced). These are well written detective thrillers. Kept me guessing. I will knock out a couple of other books and sometime in late December start on The Concrete Blonde (Harry Bosch, #3; Harry Bosch Universe, #3) by Michael Connelly. A digital library loan (and they have most if not all of the Bosch thrillers).

I have chosen to delve fully into the Bosch series...all 23 and counting. It will take awhile but as I dig into this persona, I can't help but feel Connelly has given his character a solid, real ( well, as real as fiction can get), texture....warts and all. I am reading them sequentially to follow the timeline of Harry's perslnal/professional life. Next up: The Concrete Blonde...sounds intriguing...recommend highly this series.

The crime, if it is one, is puzzling. Did narcotics officer Calexico Moore commit suicide by shooting himself with a shotgun? The physical difficulty of even doing in one’s self like that is daunting. Harry Bosch gets this case along with another one, seemingly unrelated at first. It involves a dead body found by a dumpster identified only as Juan Doe #67. Moore left a wife and Bosch often reflects how beautiful she is. Lucky for Bosch he has a contact in the coroner’s office, one Teresa Corazon. She an attractive woman, available, and soon they are sharing some pillow talk at Harry’s cottage. Wonder if she’s whispering sweet details of the autopsies? Even worse, did Bosch fantasize about Moore’s wife during all this? Bosch’s cases involve the drug traffic and require him to make a trip to Mexico where one of the most powerful drugs is something called black ice. It’s being made down there somewhere and somehow gets across the border in large quantities. Once he is south of the border, Bosch gets involved in various activities with Mexican police authorities, even taking time to see a bull fight. This kind of plot movement is a bit unusual for author Michael Connelly and seems to dilute the momentum of the story. The most redeeming feature of this book is the surprise ending. I was tempted to give up the book earlier but I’m glad I persevered.

Will Bosch make it out of this book with an intact relationship?And how do the deaths of a dealer, Moore and another LAPD homicide officer all tie together with "Black Ice"?This is the second Bosch book. Connelly keeps us watching all the balls as they fly through the air. Bosch comes across as the iconoic tough loner with a heart of gold, committed to seeing justice done and truth uncovered, even, though, he doesn't necessarily want the law to interfere with his investigation or truth to be revealed if it means that a widow may lose her pension.The story was entertaining and kept me turning the pages.

Connelly expertly grabs the reader's attention in a few pages then begins an intriguing and compelling story that belongs in the first rank of the noir genre in the modern era. With all due respect to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, Connelly weaves a tale that rivals their best work. The novel begins with a corpse and balances the storytelling with a corpse at the end. What happens inbetween is storytelling of the highest order.

I first learned about Bosch from the Amazon Prime show (free plug Amazon!). Often when I go back and read the source books of show I like I am disappointed because they are often very different (I'm looking at you, Bones and Justified!) However Black Ice, the first Harry Bosch novel, felt very familiar to me. Yes there were some differences, but they made sense story wise, like moving the timeline up 20 years, merging plots of two books, combining characters as needed.I was also glad that reading the books wasn't a retread of the show. I definitely feel like I can enjoy the books, and enjoy the show as well.

"The Black Ice" is the second novel of the Harry Bosch series and I really enjoyed this book more than "Black Echo", the first novel of the series. This book was amazing! I couldn't put it down.In this novel, Harry Bosch,(the detective)is looking into the apparent suicide of a fellow officer who had been investigating the appearance of a new drug on the street scene called "black ice." Superiors want the investigation wrapped up as soon as possible, but the more Bosch digs, the more mysteries he finds that lead him south of the border for the final confrontation. This was an excellent and multi-layered story, unpeeling like layers of an onion. Connelly is an excellent storyteller, and he is patient enough to let the story develop at its own pace, with believable characters and a well designed plot.The ending has a real twist, that I didn't even see coming.For anyone that loves reading Mystery-Suspense-Thrillers...don't miss out on this one. This book was amazing.

This is one of several books that rose to the top of the list while researching the subject of desert gardening in southern Arizona. Mielke's book turned out to be better even than expected. Very well organized, well edited, and full of useful information for our purpose (landscaping and gardening a new property in Ajo, Arizona). The book begins with very helpful general introductory material related to growing plants in the desert. It then gets into species by species accounts, organized alphabetically by species name, which is very handy. Scientific and common names for each species are given, and for each species there are terse, informative sections on: general description; native distribution; tips on culture; and uses in the landscape. The tips on culture and uses in the landscape we found particularly useful. Each species description is paired to a color plate, and the photography is well done. There are useful appendices in the back of the book related to picking plants for particular circumstances (wildlife, for ex.), and a list of resources, plus a good bibliography and index. The book is in a format that can easily be used as a 'field guide' for nursery visits, or hiking in the desert, which is amazing considering the amount of information packed into it. Note that the term "native plants" in the title is used broadly; Mielke includes plants that are natives of three American deserts: Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan. So the range involved is extensive, from SE California to West Texas, and south into Mexico as well. Not all geographers recognize a Great Basin and Colorado Plateau desert type, but a number of the plants described in the book are native to those regions as well. However, plenty of information is provided to allow the reader to narrow down the plant choices to those most appropriate for his or her particular provenance. We are focused on low water landscaping, and it is now difficult to imagine trying to put in a xeric garden without this book.

This is the best book I've found on Southwestern Landscape and desert plants. My Library consists of 5 desert landscaping books and I always end up with Judy's Native Plants. Thank you so very much. My original Native Plants book is getting a little on the ragged side so I ordered a new one and I ordered a second one for my yard maintenance man. Since we are mandated to cut back on water usage there is more of a demand on planting Southwestern Desert plants and their care.

MOON PORTLAND is a great book about Portland, Oregon, and its environs. It tells you all you need to know about the city, from where the best Asian food is to the top shopping areas, where the best activities for kids are, and even which radio stations are willing to give music by average-looking people a fair break. One radio station listing (KUFO 101.1) is outdated, but that doesn't make this book any less wonderful. Buy it in any format you can get it in, and if you can, get both the paperback AND Kindle editions.

This is an excellent resource on Portland! A must have for any Portlander or anyone visiting the city. Well written and well organized!
