There was a meeting in 1963 between Robert F. Kennedy and James Baldwin and a few of Baldwin’s friends. When you think of an example of speaking truth to power, that meeting as described by Dyson here, will indeed standout as definitive.Dyson writes “I heard over the years how explosive it was, how it brought together other folk I had admired, including Harry Belafonte. The gathering pitted an earnest if defensive white liberal against a raging phalanx of thinkers, activists, and entertainers who were out for blood. I’ve always wanted to read a book about that historic moment, and more important, about its meaning for us today as we struggle with many of the same issues America confronted 50 years ago.”Dyson has not written that book, but this one has enough details about that meeting to give a clear picture about what took place. He manages to put the reader in that room while brilliantly filling out the book with looks at the various communities represented. There are chapters on the Artists, Activists, Intellectuals and the Politicians. And Dyson doesn’t just lock into 1963, he brings the discussion current because....”racial and political truths that we still confront today.”So while that very important and volatile meeting sets the foundation for the book, the actions or inactions of our current community leaders-not in the geographical sense, but community in the sense of interest groups, i.e. Artists, Politicians, etc.-are the brick and mortar that makes this a must read. The melding of the historical with current day concerns and challenges qualifies this work as one of Dyson’s best.Dyson’s prose and criticism is as always, electric and sharp, “the enshrinement of ignorance as the basis of power and authority, is the personification of white supremacy and white arrogance.” The indictment of white supremacy while encouraging Whites to wake up and recognize is a continued effort from his most previous work, Tears We Cannot Stop. As evidenced by the subtitle here, Dyson is of the belief that the historic meeting in 1963 was an important conversation about race that no doubt needs be to continued and expanded because it remains unfinished. However in this book he has turned up the volume so it’s clear what truth sounds like! Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced DRC. The publishing date is June 5, 2018. Mark your calendar.

I read Michael Eric Dyson to be challenged and to get a different view of life in America, and this book does that. At times it is a challenge toread his brutally honest opinions of life in the USA this long after the end of the Civil War, reconstruction, and the Civil Rights movement, butif we ever hope to heal the deep wounds of slavery we have to face the hard truths, and Mr. Dyson certainly is not afraid of hard truth.

I cannot honestly claim that I have found all the works of Dr, Dyson exceptional. I have sometimes found myself disagreeing with something written or questioning something written or squinting one eye tightly and saying to myself, " I don't really think so". However, in "What Sounds Like Truth" (see book underlining), I find Dr. Dyson to be the voice of a rhythmic brilliance composed of preacher, intellectual, and brother across the kitchen table who valiantly attempts to slay those dark, white phantoms of hatred, of fear, of ignorance while giving voice those of us with suffering from the ambiguity of lexical failure. When Dyson, rather early in the book writes, ". . .all that made sense no longer held in place, and it appeared that the cosmos had gotten drunk. . .teetered off course and hurdled madly into oblivion", it echoes precisely how I felt hearing the news of Dr. King's assassination. That feeling was mine, and once again my eyes became misty. What Dr. Dyson says, once again, is hear me, see me. And one man, Robert Kennedy, among many, finally did which enabled him to speak truth, and thus, prevented one city engaging in the fury that erupted across the country upon hearing of King's assassination. What Kennedy did was, "Listen and listen and listen".

Michael Eric Dyson amplifies the need to address the systemic racism with in the United States. He allows the reader to be in the room where the conversation with some of the leading black activists and RFK took place. He addresses the leftovers of racial bigotry that starve this nation of its notion of being "one nation under God." It is a must read for those who fight for justice, but more importantly, it is a handbook for those who just do not understand the perpetual angst of black fook.

The author is an absolutely wonderful speaker. I bought the book seeking more of his piercing insight into the difference between reality in America and the national narrative. But this book just wanders all over the place. It begins with a discussion of the relationship between James Baldwin and Robert Kennedy, and a famous meeting he held with some black leaders. That was interesting and revealing. From there he just jumps around discussing various pop culture people and some of the things they have said or done in the way of black activism. It's relatively interesting, like a literary, socially-aware Entertainment Tonight. But if I would have known how scattered and disorganized the book is I would not have bought it. I don't mind that I read it but have other things I would have rather read, like re-reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

Loved this book. It is so informative and enlightening. To say MED is prolific is a major understatement. I highly recommend this masterpiece. Buy and read this book.

Professor Dyson offer a powerful and much needed history of how moral leadership id developed through forthright, clear, and direct communication. The book details the critical engagement between key African American figures and Robert Kennedy in which those figures told Kennedy the truth in love about race relations that forced Rober Kennedy to have the coursage to confront his mental models concerning race relations. Kenedy's character was strong enough to face the reality with courage and then to take leadership in advancing civil rights in the years before he was murdered.Professor Dyson continues his significant contribution to our civic discurse and understanding in this book! Iy recommend with enthusiasm What Truth Sounds Like!

Review

"Olyan's book is thorough, meticulous, judicious, and nuanced; and he succeeds admirably in accomplishing what he sets out to do."---Byron E. Shafer, Fordham University, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly"This is a significant book that uses anthropological approaches in a clear, non-flashy way to advance our understanding of biblical cult, and especially our conceptions of holiness. . . . Olyan is to be congratulated for writing a very readable, clear and interesting book on a topic that is central to biblical scholarship."---Mark Z. Brettler, Jewish Quarterly Review"This study is clearly written, well researched, and methodologically up-to-date. [Olyan] has given painstaking attention to textual details, yet has succeeded in presenting the results in a manner that helps the reader to assemble these details into comprehensible notions. He is also sensitive to the complexities of social differentiation in ancient Israel. Olyan has presented us with an excellent scholarly achievement on a par with his previous studies."―Douglas Knight, Vanderbilt University Divinity School.

Amazon.com Review

The typical image of South-Central Los Angeles doesn't lend itself to peaceful and productive high schools. But as Los Angeles Times reporter Miles Corwin chronicles in this troubling yet uplifting book, the ills of the inner city have not completely defeated Toni Little's advanced-placement students at Crenshaw High School, with whom Corwin spent the 1996-1997 academic year as a silent observer. Having grown weary of writing about gang violence, drive-by shootings, and drug arrests, Corwin wanted "to find a way to write about the other children of South-Central, the students who avoid the temptations of the street, who strive for success, who, against all odds, in one of America's most impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhoods, manage to endure, to prevail, to succeed." He also wanted to show "how truly slanted the playing field remains, how inequality is built into a system touted as a meritocracy." Though 98 percent of the students in the gifted program go on to attend college, it takes a near superhuman effort for them to reach graduation day. In And Still We Rise, Corwin details exactly why. Corwin's poignant portraits of the students and his sensitive evocation of the effort it requires for them to pursue their education are among the many strengths of the book. There's Olivia, the abused former runaway, ward of the county, and gifted student; Sadikifu, the promising Muslim rapper who constantly fights the gritty allure of gang life; and Toya, who lost her own mom to domestic violence and who struggles to balance schoolwork and motherhood. Corwin further explores the intricate intersections of affirmative action, educational expectations, urban neglect, and racism. By turns shocking and inspiring, this is journalistic work that gets to the core of its subject to reveal students who "value education, sacrifice much to further their educations, and overcome many obstacles--including even their own teachers--in order to obtain their educations." It shouldn't be so hard. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly

Los Angeles Times reporter Corwin offers a viscerally affecting glimpse inside the world of an inner-city high school. Hewing to the approach of his first book, The Killing Season: A Summer Inside an LAPD Homicide Division, he followed the seniors in an Advanced Placement (AP) English class from their first day of school in 1997 to graduation. Overcrowded, underfunded Crenshaw High School has a dropout rate of almost 50%. Notorious as the setting for the movie Boyz 'n the Hood and as home base for one of L.A.'s worst gangs, Crenshaw is located in the impoverished and crime-ridden South-Central district. The struggling students whose stories Corwin adroitly interweaves face trying circumstances: some have parents on welfare, in prison or addicted to crack; many work at part- or full-time jobs; several cope with the scarring effects of physical or sexual abuse. Yet most minority students in Crenshaw's "gifted magnet program" manage to get As and go on to college. Corwin succeeds admirably in avoiding the cliched image of inner-city schools, with wide-eyed, altruistic teachers and menacing students. For example, he describes Toni Little, the white AP English teacher (nearly all of whose students are black), as a volatile, histrionic personality who frequently involves students in her bitter ongoing battle with administrators. California voted to end affirmative action in 1997, and Corwin passionately argues that affirmative action programs are an imperfect but necessary measure to level a grossly uneven playing field. His profiles of high achievers who shun the temptations of the street are sure to inspire. Agent: Barney Karpfinger. (Apr.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This gripping immersion into inner city school life makes the perfect companion read to Tracy Kidder's "Among Schoolchildren". From a nice, safe, concerned, caring enviornment, where the problems are understandable and manageable in "Among Schoolchildren"; to a place where success is measured not merely by acheivement but by the tremendous obstacles students must overcome merely to be in school, in this gripping, similarly styled work. The two books are a startling picture of the tremendous gulf of opportunity and enviornment at the spectrum ends of our society.I strongly recommend both books, to everyone; not just parents, teachers or those who are usually associated with "education" interests. "And Still We Rise.." is not merely a vision of a brutal social/educational reality that must be addressed, but a poignant drama, as well. The young people whose stories are followed are the heroes of the most brutal battles raging today; crime, drugs, racism, and a culture of despair and degradation. These are the best and the brightest ... they are forced to face obstacles that should be reserved only for those who have transgressed horribly against society. The incidental intrusion of the writer into this jouranlistic narrative is the only jarring note to be found in an otherwise seamless view. The unfortunate, even tragic circumstances that cause that intrusion, however, are understandable, from a human standpoint, even if they are inexcusable as viewed through the prism of journalistic purity. An emmimently readable, engaging work. Recommended.

Excellent read concerning student trials, tribulations and successes of students and teachers in South Central LA.Excellent insights revealed about lives of folks living in poverty areas.

I purchased this book simply because it was required for a School Social Work class I'm taking. I ended up finding it very interesting and highly recommend it. More people should educate themselves on the public education system in the United States!!

This is an extraordinary tale following children who, against all the odds, seem to find comfort and safe haven in their desire to learn. I was fascinated by the struggle to see the next step for some of these kids, however. Even though they clearly value the education they are getting, the giant leap from the struggles of a neighborhood High School to a distant College Campus seems to really define how hard it is for these kids to break the cycle of poverty and broken homes most have experienced.I am not an educator. I was motivated to buy this book after hearing it recommended on Imus. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and wonder what it will take to overhaul our dismal education systems.

Great book! Definitely will recommend this to others!!! A very rich story behind students of color in Los Angeles.

This book is very inspiring, and offers a great perspective for teachers and others who work with kids in inner city environments. Some chapters can be a little dense and a little political because it teaches a lot about affirmative action and other more political issues, but if you're reading this to learn, it's absolutely wonderful.

I lived in Suburbia my whole life and I heard about these kinds of stories all throughout my life. Corwin did an amazing job illustrating every student's life. These students go through so much to get intellectually stimulated and to have an education with their peers. I enjoyed how he also dedicated some chapters to the administration and the teachers and all the things that surround the students and the teachers lives -- Affirmative Action, the school, the city, etc. It was a bit confusing since the chapters are named after a student but in between are the daily class stories so it can be a bit confusing. But this is a definite recommended read.

I just about almost cried towards the end of the last chapter. I am sure if this was a movie I would cry watching it. The struggles these teenagers go through are what makes them want to strive in school. Some are in foster home to foster home and others were abused or in a deadly gang and changed to be a better person for his own life. I liked the character of Ms. Little as I read the second half of the book. She is a teacher who does care about her students being successful and preparing them to pass the Advanced Placement Exam at the end of the year. All-in-all, this book was a great read and I'm glad my teacher assigned it to me! Read it in 5 days with pauses in between to eat and shower and eat of course and going to my religious service.

Love her poems, especially with the fairy tale influences tirmed dark and brought into gritty real life. I really connect with many ways writers and artists of many kinds bring fairy tales into the modern world or put twists on them. Fairy tales have a universality, amd it is fascinating to connect these stories that most people think of as for children with morbid and important "adult" issues.Though I do feel sorry for the autor's suffering, she was seriously abusive to her daughter (I don't want to go into detail). That isn't relevant to her work some might say, but it saddens me becaise I get invested in the creators of work I admire. It is all very sad, and maybe soemday I will try to study Anne more. For now I prefer to just enjoy these poems. One of the first amd only poetry collections I bought.

To be a great poet, one must possess the soul of a poet as a prerequisite, and the honesty of a human being who is unafraid of revealing their soul to its essential bareness. Anne Sexton does that with natural and admirable ease. Perhaps exactly because she possessed those necessary qualities, she was well aware that it takes more than just the beautiful aspects of life, to create poetry that touches forgotten strings in our hearts. Strings that each on their own may produce sounds we would rather close our ears to, but used in the inspired and ingenious way as she does, and as a compilation, sound off with a flare, expressing the opus of Anne's life and resonating within our own hearts and lives. Great poetry turns on "lights" in our minds and awakens dormant feelings in our hearts. Anne artfully proves that the ugly and the frightful, the ridiculous and the humorous, and not just the beautiful, all find their perfect place in poetry. The creativity and wit of her poems, like facets of a gem, reflect life's elements of joy and anguish, and clearly demonstrate that soul's journey inevitably passes through the muck of life, yet, in the end, and deep in its core, it remains unchanged, in its purity and reflection of the Devine. In two words: Great poetry! Anne Sexton, you ARE loved!Anna Leda

In this remarkable collection of poems, Anne Sexton offers readers seventeen transformations of classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales. As she makes clear in the first poem "The Gold Key", Sexton assumes the persona of the storyteller for this collection, calling herself a "middle-aged witch" with "my face in a book and my mouth wide, ready to tell you a story or two." This device allows her to write about intensely personal topics, such as a sexually abusive father, through the detached voice of a storyteller. The use of fairy tales also provides Sexton with a shared cultural framework that enables her to communicate her own experiences and perspectives in a universal language that readers already understand intimately.Fairytales have a power few of us realize. The stories shape many of our fantasies as children; they also condition us to accept traditional gender roles as we grow up. I believe that Anne Sexton understood their power and influence. She brilliantly tapped into that power and transformed the tales in a way that forces the reader to look at them with fresh eyes. Before launching into the tales themselves, Sexton set the themes of the stories in a modern or personal context. These connections, along with the interlacing of 20th century details (like soda pop and jockstraps) and her use of modern syntax in the fairy tales made their subversive commentary on the burdens and fears of women in a society shaped by male dominance startlingly clear. In her transformed tales, Sexton examines the female archetypes they depict: the docile virgin, the wicked stepmother, the aging witch. She also sheds an illuminating, feminist light on the themes of female competition and the idea of happily ever after which pop up often in fairytales. It is significant that Sexton uses the gritty Grimm versions of the tales, instead of the child-friendly Disney versions we grew up with. Their original form reveals the subversive nature and insightful symbolism of the fairy tales, many of which were crafted by women. While this collection is a departure from Sexton's typical confessional style, the poems of "Transformations" are unabashedly naked and intimately introspective--a wondrous achievement by one of our greatest poets.

This compilations is full of details that reflect the author's loss of innocence as surely as for the characters in Grimm's Fairy Tales. A must for modern poetry lovers and students of the darker origins of children's literature that was often more about cautionary talecrafting rather than entertainment.

Amazingly original and disturbing reinterpretations of traditional fairy tales. A single spoken word of dialog will change your thinking about Sleeping Beauty forever.

Thanks!

I was fascinated by Sexton's reframing of fairy tales in poetic form. They are psychologically powerful and stay with the reader long after they have been read, They also demand constant re-reading as each time uncovers different thoughts, ideas, and philosophies. If you have an interest and appreciation of what the traditional tales have to offer in contempory times, then its worth checking this book out.

Received merchandise in a timely manner. Am very satisfied with it. Great experience!

The whole Roadside Geology series has become important to me and as I travel, they have given me local information I'd either not known at all, or been unclear on. Who'd have imagined that in the soft, Mississippi River Delta, amid the swamps and bayous, there are major faults whose track you can see on the terrain?

used for research and loaned out to geology college student for a course study excellent!

My only regret is that the photographs aren't in color. I'm a visual person.

A good read. A detailed, well researched account that re-writes history as far as the "who" in the discovery of or attainment of the North Pole. The lead and most well-known characters, Peary, Cook, and Henson clearly could not prove their claims to reach one of the coldest places on earth, but the efforts they undertook were lessons in human endurance and singular commitment to what amounted to a lifelong compulsion costing thousands of dollars(millions of dollars today) that came up short. The significant part of this account is the business relationship between Cook and Peary that turned into a competition that ended in a lie to the nation and the world that neither could disprove. Although mentioned in several places in this account with some personal background, the undereducated Matthew Henson, had he possessed the technical skill, could have proved that the march to the North Pole had been attained. But because of the times in which this all occurred, who would have believed him? This book is well worth reading in tandem with Hampton Sides' "In the Kingdom of Ice" and the teleflick "The Terror."

I had always been taught growing up that Peary had discovered the North Pole. It was very interesting to read a non-biased view on the two expedition leaders who had raced to be the first to discover it. The book was well written and leaves the reader captivated. I was left feeling sorry for Cook and wished History had treated him differently.

The attempts to be the first to reach the two Poles are riveting stories. The South Pole race is the more well-known of the two with the great publicity that sparked feelings of pride between the competing nations, the different styles of exploration involved, and the ultimate tragedies. The race to the North Pole is also an exciting story with much intrigue and, as became apparent in reading "True North" by Bruce Henderson, has a definite good guy versus bad guy element in addition to the controversy as to who actually won the race. It begins with an excellent prologue ending with a line that really draws the reader into the story. This reviewer had recently read "Fatal Passage" by Kevin McGoogan before beginning to read "True North," and soon saw parallels between the protagonists in both stories: John Rae in the former and Frederick Cook in the latter. Both started their careers as doctors and both became highly competent and successful explorers, in part, by learning from and adopting methods of the natives of the North. Rae was an inspiration on South Pole race winner Raoul Amundsen and Cook was a mentor and good friend of Amundsen and worked with him in the Antarctic where they showed a knack for innovation in lighter and more efficient exploration equipment. Cook would use such innovation in becoming the first to scale Mount. McKinley. Rae and Cook both had their most heralded achievements challenged by rival factions who damaged their reputations and took their glory. Rae's main antagonist was Lady Jane Franklin, Cook's was Robert Peary, his only competition to the North Pole.Peary comes off in "True North" very badly. Henderson paints him as an arrogant, domineering man so hungry for glory he was more than willing to resort to lies and deception to exaggerate his achievements and smear those of his chief rival, the humble Cook. Many of Peary's discoveries or milestones were questioned by members of his own party (i.e. Perry Land and Perry Channel in Greenland, pg. 75) and were later discredited. Peary, however, had friends in high places and did not seem to have to defend his claims as vigorously as Cook. Peary also used his political clout to relentlessly attack Cook, including his reports on Mount McKinley. As in "Fatal Passage," Henderson is very bias in his championing of Cook and vilification of Peary. Upon finishing the book, most readers will probably see Cook as a victim who never received his due and Peary as the bully who hogged acclamation he did not earn. The worse cases against Peary are the incidences detailed where Peary endangered the health of others to achieve his individual greatness and sabotage the work of Cook. Was Peary really a heartless villain and Cook a pristine hero? Such things are usually somewhere in between. Not having read other books on the subject, this reviewer does not know if Henderson's stance is the norm among historians or is an unfair, one-sided account. Still, "True North" makes for a solid case and is a well-written examination of one of the most exciting events in the age of exploration.

If you are a lover of Arctic adventure and history this is a must read!Bruce Henderson does a great job comparing the two men who claimed to be first to the North Pole. Was it Peary? Was it Cook? This is so well written and interesting you'll find it hard to put down. I have always had my opinion as to who can rightfully claim the title of "First", but after this book, I changed my mind. You may do the same. Each explorers journey is detailed along with a close look at thier personality and inter-action with others. I guarantee you will love this book!

Great book. A lot of detail about both Peary's and Cook's life and adventures. Haven't got to the actual journey to the north pole yet. Very enjoyable reading.

This story of the conquest of the North Pole by Cook and Peary held my interest to the end. It's an all too common tale of human conquest and jealousy. A well-told story.

It is often difficult to translate history into a compelling story. Bruce Henderson, however, managed beautifully in True North. It was a terrific read, with all of the action of a adventure novel, but wonderfully documented and (near as I can tell) historically on point. It was a post-hospital read following the birth of my last baby, and despite my exhaustion, I had a difficult time putting it down.

A good book that made me want to bash Peary on the head. Cook is a new hero of mine - a man of honor, adventure and integrity. I just might think of his journeys every time I stare at the north star.
