This book is a compelling read which gives an insight into Saudi culture. Starting with a compelling love story between the author and a Bin Laden brother, it chronicles the clash between the Swiss-born author and her Saudi husband's culture. The book is now dated and I longed for an update. This is not great literature and may well show signs of being ghostwritten, but it is worth a read.

I love the book. It gives a great deal of information on how Saudis live and believe. It is hard to believe how the Saudis (the rich ones) could go off to other countries and behave in the ways opposite to the strict ways in which they were taught to believe. It took a lot of courage for Carmen Bin Ladin to teach her daughters in the way she did, especially while she had to live within the family. Her stubborness in not wanting her girls to grow up and live like Saudi women was commendable. I kept worrying that she would lose her children if she decided to leave Saudi Arabia. This is a hard book to put down.

This is a memoir of Carmen Bin Ladin's life as a child growing up in Switzerland; of later meeting her husband Yeslam Bin Ladin whilst a student in Geneva; of then living in Jeddah amongst the Bin Ladins; and finally to her painful divorce.Carmen was born of a Swiss father and an Iranian mother. It was not accepted in Iran for a Muslim girl to marry a Christian foreigner, so her mother had to leave Iran to escape her family's harsh criticisms. But the marriage did not last long, and her mother could not return back to Iran in fear of being looked upon as a divorced woman, a curse in Iranian society. After the divorce, Carmen and her mother remained in Switzerland. It was in Geneva that Carmen first met her husband to be, Yeslam Bin Ladin. She described him as being quiet, well dressed, and smart (later in life he used to compete with other princes on whom dressed better). Carmen soon started dating Yeslam, and humorously, she ends up getting married in a car in a parking lot in Saudi Arabia. Apparently, she was not allowed to enter the ministry building to sign the marriage papers, so the papers were brought to her whilst she sat waiting in the car. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to mix with men, and therefore cannot enter buildings were men work. Getting married in a car was the first of the many culture shocks Carmen was to experience.Carmen relates her life as the wife of a Bin Ladin. Mohammad Bin Ladin, the father of the Bin Ladin clan, had over 50 children and countless wives whom he kept at his compound at Kilo 7 in Jeddah. I think Kilo 7 refers to the Mecca Road, 7 being seven kilometers away from Jeddah, but someone will have to check me on that.It is quite interesting that Mohammad Bin Laden would choose to keep all his wives together in one compound. In Islam, a man can have 4 wives at the same time. Mohammad Bin Laden therefore had to divorce a wife each time he wanted to remarry in order not to exceed the allowed quota of 4 wives. As long as one of his divorced wives did not remarry, she was allowed to stay in the compound together with her kids. It was even rumored that there was a competition going on between King Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia and Mohammad Bin Ladin on who will have more children. King Abdul-Aziz won, with over 60 children and many more wives.Living at the Bin Ladin compound was hard for Carmen. She couldn't go shopping for she was prohibited from mixing with men. Whenever she needed something, such as a bathing suit, she had to send her driver. Eventually Safeway opened in Jeddah, and Carmen was able to go grocery shopping. She relates one instance where a group of British and American expats were all gathering at the chocolate aisle and filling their trolleys with chocolate boxes. Carmen later realized that the chocolates contained liqueur. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, but somehow the liqueur chocolates must have slipped by the customs officials.Carmen's life was a reasonably happy one in the beginning. She describes her relationships with the other Bin Ladin wives; the relationship of her husband with his brothers; and of course, she talks about Osama Bin Ladin.Apparently, Osama was a quiet man and very pious. Unlike his brothers who at first lived a lavish life and were known for their promiscuity and for being playboys, Osama never embraced the western liberal way of life. Carmen says that rumors of him having been a playboy in his younger days are just false. Even pictures allegedly showing him partying in Europe are not of him, but of his brothers who resemble him somewhat. Interestingly, she says that his brothers do not believe that he could have been capable of masterminding the 9/11 attacks on the United States.Since the Bin Ladin family was the only family given exclusive rights to renovate the two holy sites, Mecca and Medina, the family was given preferential treatment. For example, if a policeman or a member of the religious police stopped one of the Bin Ladins, all they had to say was Bin Ladin, and they were quickly released or given right of way. No one asked for their IDs. This however was not good policy, for it allowed a group of Islamists, hidden in Bin Ladin trucks (which were never searched), to attack and seize the holy Mosque in Mecca in 1979. In fact, one of the Bin Ladin brothers was arrested as a suspect in the attack, but was soon released because he was a Bin Ladin. When Mohammad Bin Ladin died in a plane crash he was piloting, the eldest son was still in his twenties. The king therefore appointed a trustee to run the family fortune. Eventually, as the brothers grew up, they took full control of the family business. According to Carmen, her husband Yeslam was the smartest of the brothers, and this gave rise to envy and jealousy. His brothers frequently downplayed his decisions, and publicly offended him. They also took credit for many of his savvy deals that added to his family's wealth and fame. Eventually, Yeslam quit his family business, was given 300 million dollars as his share of the family wealth, and moved to Switzerland. However, his brothers, eventually recognizing his value to the family business, asked him to return.Carmen relates how she longed to travel outside Saudi Arabia, and how she enjoyed her freedom during her trips to Switzerland and the United States. One thing I liked about Carmen is that she is a bibliophile. She piled books on her travels to read while literally imprisoned in the Bin Ladin compound in Jeddah. She read all subjects, from philosophy to politics.Carmen describes the state of mind of the Saudi Royals during the downfall of the Shah of Iran, and the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini. Before the Ayatollah, Saudi Arabia was moving in the right direction, becoming more liberal and westernized. However, after the Iranian revolution, with fear of it spilling to Saudi Arabia, religious fanatics gained power and turned the country into a strict religious monarchy, very much like during the Taliban in Afghanistan. Women were not allowed to drive; had to be completely covered; were discouraged of going to school; were discouraged to go in public places; were forbidden from working; were not allowed to join any health clubs or do any sports; and were raised to be subservient to their future husbands. The country suddenly moved hundreds of years backwards! Carmen, who had high hopes of living in Jeddah, had her hopes collapse. Her life was becoming unbearable in Jeddah. She longed to go back to Switzerland.Trouble between her and her husband first started during her third pregnancy. Her husband did not want the baby, and Carmen eventually had an abortion. She describes the psychological pain she had to endure after the abortion. When Carmen was pregnant again, her husband once more asked her to have an abortion. This time she refused, and she knew that it would be over between them. To make matters worse, she learnt that her husband was cheating on her, and she even caught him leaving one of his mistress's homes in the middle of the morning.Carmen gives us a lot of insight into the life of her husband Yeslam. Apparently, later in his life, he acted strange, was often depressed, and complained of imaginary illnesses. He also had a fear of flying, and refused to fly alone. Like his father, his brother Salem also died while piloting his own aircraft in Texas.I did not like the last chapter which talked about the Bin Ladins. The chapter seemed more like an attack on the Bin Ladin family, as if Carmen wanted to get back at her ex-husband. She says that the Bin Ladin family should make their secret dealings open to public scrutiny, and that their present relation with Osama should be revealed. These statements somewhat weakened her book. If she knows something we don't she should just tell us, or better still, let the CIA know. I am sure she is genuine in her last chapter (chapter 19, conclusion), but I think it is more personal and revengeful than anything else. By the way, an additional chapter was added in later editions. The book I read had the added chapter included.Overall, this is a good read for those who want to know about Saudi society in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, and especially those wanting to learn about the Bin Ladin family. The reader should note that since King Abdullah gained the throne, Saudi Arabia has been moving forward at a tremendous speed, and the country is becoming more open, tolerant, and westernized. And kudos, women now outsmart the guys. Well done!

"This book had me spellbound from beginning to the end. I loved this book because it sparked my curiosities and gave me the in-depth look inside the daily routines and extremely sheltered lives of women in Saudi Arabia. What drew my attention to this book was that it entailed the personal life experiences of Carmen Bin Ladin, while being married at the time to her now ex-husband, Yeslam Bin Ladin and brother of Osama Bin Ladin. What a tangled web poor Carmen fell into and was trapped for many years while married to Yeslam. In her book, Carmen describes the many layers of the required codes of conduct, both inside her home in the kingdom and outside in public, and describes the beliefs and interactions she had with the other women of the Bin Ladin clan. The Saudi Arabian lifestyle became difficult for Carmen to conform to and accept, in every aspect of her life as a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law in Saudi Arabia. Carmen, the author, describes in her book how her freedom to make her own decisions and to voice her own opinions became a privilege she desperately needed to recover, which she lost in Saudi Arabia. Her human rights of freedom became a valuable necessity for the happiness of herself and her daughters. I admire Carmen for having the strength to stay true to herself, not change her beliefs to please her husband and his family. She didn't allow her young daughters to accept the Saudi lifestyle and the nightmares she had endured. Therefore, she followed her heart and instincts by divorcing her husband Yeslam and attained full custody of her daughters. It was heartbreaking that Yeslam turned his back on his own children and cut them off financially and denied he was the father. To make matters worst, Yeslam's side of the family also turned their backs to Carmen and her daughters. This book served as an educational tool for me, because it taught me that not everything that sparkles is gold, and to be cautious of who you open your heart to because you can end up with a wolf in sheeps clothing".

I enjoyed reading this book and could relate to so much of it because I am an American living in the Middle East. I think the average reader would find it interesting, but seeing the culture up close and personal makes it more relatable. She speaks with such candor about the things that she experienced and lived with and lived thru. She was always respectful of the members of the Bin Laden family when she addressed them in the book. Never trying to belittle or demean them but share a view into their life. She just hit so many nails on the head about the way women live and are treated who are a part of this culture. I feel for her and her daughters because though they are no longer tied to the Bin Laden family legally, because of the girls birth right, they will always be Bin Ladens and the world will forever associate them to their uncle Osama and his world. Good easy read!

Before I begin, I just want to say that this is the first review I have done for Amazon despite being a Prime member for 6+ years. I know I know, you may be thinking I am some lazy bum who does not care about his fellow Amazon shopper....OR realize that this book has made such a large impact on my life and want to share it with as many people as possible. My goal is to give a little background about myself, my struggle and the solution. Even if just one person gets something from this then this review will be a success. Now a little about myself... I am 26, I have a successful job in the construction industry, have a great group of friends and family and my whole world revolves around cars. Talking, wrenching, watching, driving. It is in my blood. This seems irrelavent now but will make more sense later. I went to a great high school, played all the sports, never did drugs or drank in excess. Yes, I went to parties but it was not a every weekend event. Continued on to college and got a two year degree. I was paying for myself so I could not afford the required classes to get my Bachelors degree and in search of a job I ended up getting into construction. By the time I was 20 I was probably drinking twice a week steady with some of the older guys I worked with. I turned 21 and without realizing it my drinking had shot through the roof. I was going out and buying this or that to try whether it be hard alcohol or microbrews. I did not think much of it since I was just doing what every other 21 year old was doing, right? Around the age of 23 I realized I had a major problem on my hands. I was buying a pint of Jagermeister a night and could slam the entire bottle in one shot. Of course I left out some details in those two years such as I gained about 60 pounds, ruined the relationship with the girl of my dreams whom I dated for 5 years, I lost touch with friends I had known for years, was now socially and personally using drugs (weed, pills, coke) becuase I was trying to reach a "new drunk" since I had such a high tolerance and I lost touch of reality. But I always made it to work in time, I made new friends, bought bigger clothes and was just telling myself one continuous excuse after another. So I continued to drink like a fish. Anything and everything. I can not tell you how many times I would slam that pint of Jager, and within an hour was driving to the local liquor store for another pint because I started to early (5:00pm) and didnt want to lose my buzz before bedtime. Being blackout drunk was almost a nightly occourance and the hangovers just became the normal for me. But again, I kept it to myself and figured I would deal with the issue later. I eventually went to an AA meeting and what the people said there really made sense. They had the same issues as I did. But I did not know how to dedicate an hour a day to it, but more importantly, let everyone know that I was an alcoholic. I did not want that label. I tried stopping through willpower a dozen or so times. That would last about two weeks tops before I gave myself another reason to drink. I would google things and tried the Kudzu root and the vitamin deficiency programs, etc. Nothing worked. I knew I had to stop before I killed myself or someone else. I could not live my life like this. I stumbled across "The Easy Way to Control Alcohol" on Amazon, read some reviews and based off them, it almost seemed to good to be true. I ordered it and was nothing but doubtful. Once I recieved the book I did not open it up for about three weeks. Why, I am not sure, probably becasue I would have rather drink then read. Once I started, you are given very specific instructions, one of which is continue to drink like normal as long as you read the book sober. I would read a dozen or so pages at a time about every three days and I really took my time, did what he said and comprehended what he wrote. The entire time I was nothing but doubtful that this would work however in the back of my head I was jumping for joy hoping it really would be as easy as Carr said. When I got to the last chapter it probably took me a week to finish it. I was just so apprehensive and nervouse for the "final instructions." I did it, I completed the book but nothing felt different. Did it work? I went to work the next day and on the way home I avoided all the liquor stores. But it felt more like when I try to quit with the willpower method then a permanent fix. I stayed sober that night. The next day I went to work and did the same thing, avoided the liquor store stop on the way home but only because I felt like I had to. I was walking up to my front step of my house when my best friend whom I have grown up with was working on his car and he yelled over. He asked if I wanted to give him a hand putting a part on his car when he gets off work (9pm). Then it all clicked! Right then, right there, it all made sense. That was my "Eureka!" moment. I was free. No longer a slave to alcohol and my life revolving around it. At that moment I realized I no longer had to make up another excuse or text him the next day saying how I "fell asleep" when in reality would rather get in a drunken coma then hang out with my best friend and work on cars. So many times I had left car shows/events early or blew off working on a car because I wanted to get drunk. At that moment I knew I would never have to make that decision again and it felt incredible. Everything Carr said fell into place and not only was I going to be sober, I was going to stay sober and it was going to be easy. I am proud to say I am currently six weeks sober, I have not felt this good since I was about 20 and I have zero desire to drink. This includes going to the bar for lunch with my co-workers, bowling in a league once a week, celebrating New Years Eve, my birthday and attending a wedding. It is a feeling I cannot describe to say I have beaten alcohol. I know my review has been a little longer then you probably wanted to read, and I could still write more but I just wanted to show that I was your typical jock in high school, I was succeessful at whatever I tried and alcohol still dragged me down to its level. Even then I was still a functioning alcoholic but that did not make it ok. I also wanted to establish just how much alcohol I was drinking on a daily basis and was able to stop just like that. This book is your answer if you have a real desire to quit drinking. You need to follow Carr's instructions exactly as he says, take your time reading it, have an open mind and digest what he says. Just becuase you finish it does not mean your magically cured. You may have to re-read it or let it sink in for a few days. It has changed my life and I am forever thankful for it. I cannot wait to update this review and let everyone know how my sobriety is going and the positive changes it has led to. Thank you for reading and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.UPDATE: Well I’m sorry for such a long delay in writing an update but I just wanted everyone to know that I just passed my 5 year date for being sober. Yes, that is correct, 5 years without a single drop. My life has done a full 180. I went to school to become an electrician, I have purchased my own house and completely renovated it, I have an amazing fiancé who I live with, my finances are in order, I am back in the gym lifting and have lost all the weight. This one book has changed my life. I think one of the best things about this method vs the willpower method is I don’t constant want a drink. I have literally lost the desire to drink. Now do not get me wrong, there are times where I have had a bad day and could use a drink but I think that is more of what society has told us to do vs what my body actually wants. And the hardest part I think of this whole process is the social aspect of drinking. I still will go to bars about once a month with coworkers or friends and have a coke and I can be in that atmosphere and be ok. But I will always drive separate so that I can leave whenever I want. So to wrap things up if you feel that your drinking has gotten a little out of control this book is worth a read. I can’t believe I have been clean for 5 years but here I am writing this update. It is an amazing feeling. Everything is so much simpler now and I am happier then I can put into words. So don’t give up. Keep trying. It is worth the fight. Life will go on without alcohol.

This book does what it says it will do. I actually was deceived by the title....I read it for my own personal health, thinking that I was going to "control" my alcohol consumption to feel better, not realizing that I would be quitting forever. What I wasn't expecting, was it perfectly explains how you have unknowingly fallen into a BS cultural trap, meant to dumb you down into a mundane life, and pay the mafia government a tax for the privilege! I was only drinking 1-3 drinks/day...not enough to make me dysfunctional, but enough to fog my brain without me really recognizing it. OMG, the fog has lifted, and for the first time as an adult, I can think and live with the clarity and sharpness that I had when I was 14 years old! You name it...my work, my relationships with myself and others, my tennis and golf game...every aspect of my life has catapulted into a new realm of understanding, effectiveness, and efficiency!! I started at the age of 17, and pretty much haven't stopped until I was 49. My God, I feel like a kid again! I'll never go back....I'll never drink again! Thank you, Allen Carr!

If you have a drinking problem, you know it. No matter what anybody else tells you, you know deep inside if you have the problem of alcohol dependence, or alcoholism. What you do about it, is entirely up to you. Now if, and only if you are motivated to "control" your problem, this book is certainly for you. It cannot make you quit nor stay quit of it's own accord, because you have to do the "work" of sobriety on your own but it clarifies the many issues regarding alcohol use in society and the myths we encounter about drinking. The book is useful if you do not need a medical detoxification program to stop drinking. If that is the case, then it enables you to stop and also gives the first insights into maintaining sobriety since it appeals to common sense and some scientific logic without preaching or recommending you join a religious organization in order to maintain. Without giving a spoiler alert, let's just say the title is somewhat misleading, but Allen Carr reveals his secrets incrementally so the last chapter makes perfect sense. I had been to AA twice and it wasn't for me. This "method" if there is one, worked for me, but not without my own daily due diligence. You can't place your personal responsibility onto a book, but it is essential reading if you are suitably motivated. I have been enjoying a new sober life for a year and half now, and life is better and clearer than ever. I cannot recommend this book enough, but I need to emphasize that you must be highly motivated in your quest for sobriety. Think of it as freedom!.

Carr says the penny can drop straight away for some. For me it took a couple of months to undo a lifetime of brainwashing. I would reread the book or selected chapters many times and at no point could I disagree with his arguments. On occasions, I would consume almost a bottle of whisky in an evening. Now, the very idea of having a drink causes feelings of revulsion.

Amazon kept including this book in its "recommendations" to me but I always put off reading the reviews and otherwise "researching" the book because its cover was, well, a bit off-putting. But a few weeks ago, I finally read the 5 or 6 reviews and was convinced to buy the book. I'm glad I did and can only echo the praise of the other reviewers. The artwork is detailed and realistic while exuding a warmth that makes the two main characters come across as my dear friends whose joy and happiness is important to me. The story and the artwork are beautiful, sweet and sexy. But with all of the graphic intensity of the love-making (Yes. Love-making. The intimacy of the nude scenes between Ev and Rick is much deeper and more meaningful that "just sex."), the artwork never seems to go beyond the bounds of what is right and true. I was never made to feel like a voyeur or "Peeping Tom."Through everything, the boys manage - somehow - to maintain some very real sense of wonder at the miracle of love and even a real sense of innocence on some level. At the same time, the artist manages to convey the boys' twinkling-eye humor and whimsicality. I was so impressed with this book, I read it twice on the day it arrived. Please ... let's have more from this artist/author.

Side by Side by Mioki is a very sweet story with all the zeal of young love. Mioki's comic style allows him to explore every side of the passionate love story of title characters, Rick and Evan. The artwork is bright and clean, with exceptional attention on the backgrounds as well as the men who's lives inhabit this story. The detail really drives home how much the two main characters love, need, and want each other. It's an intense passion that we all want in our own lives. Like a feel good movie or a great novel, Mioki draws you in, so you can experience all the rapture that this simple, yet amazing story has to tell.

Great artist, if you don't object to naked boys sharing themselves with each other, and a few select friends. A really good story, well handled. Got only four stars because I got the feeling that there was some suppression or reluctance that detracted from the otherwise easy flow of the story and artwork. Also, it didn't end the way I wanted it to!

Good times

The art is beautiful. I was expecting more story- it is fairly simple on that count. Do not expect a complicated plot. It is mostly about excuses to have many pages of well executed illustrations of graphic sex. The text size is a little small and difficult to read. At times I found myself pulling out a magnifying glass to read it. The faces are a little like the faces you have seen on old sewing catalogues from the 60s and 70s - beautiful but a little interchangeable. After a bit, the sex illustrations as skillfully as they are rendered- start to feel more like bodies having sex rather than like people having sex- which makes them a little less sexy and a little soulless. Perhaps a richer plot would have filled in that void. But the art is beautiful and inspiring for any illustrator who wants to improve their drawing skills. You will see these forms in pretty much every position you can imagine and the artist really knows his anatomy. You could probably use it as a figure drawing reference.

Oh my, if you like gay comics this is a must buy. Its not as exaggerated as those drawn by Patrick Fillion, but equally arousing. Its a simple tale of 2 boys from the same small town who grow up and move to the city and fall in love with each other. Excellent artwork, and I hope Mioki does a 2nd and 3rd and more books.

I love this so much! I want the third one to happen.

Fun book. Great art and storyline. It is very sexual. I have read this and the sequel and recommend them.

#254,891 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It's 7:20 AM as I write this, and I haven't slept since I started reading this book, moments after downloading it. I'm about 80% done at this point, but had to stop and post this early review (I'll update this a bit when I'm 100% done). I've never been much of a fan of sitcoms, so I'm not exactly part of the audience who has had much experience with Leah's acting work - although I knew who she was, certainly. I'd seen enough however to know I found her appealing and incredibly attractive long before I learned she'd be writing this just from what I'd seen in an episode of two of King of Queens. When I heard advance word of the release, having read just about every book there is on the subject of Scientology (from Inside Scientology, to Bare Faced Messiah, to Beyond Belief to The Unbreakable Miss Lovely), from personal accounts to journalistic exposes, I eagerly anticipated Troublemaker. The biggest surprise for me, first off, is how supremely readable "Troublemaker" is - how entertaining, honest, unpretentious, shocking and just plain funny it is. Leah has a big mouth, and she knows it, but her writing speaks directly to the reader in an open and unfiltered way that books written by celebrities rarely do. She isn't a bulls***ter, and she's not going to sugarcoat anything, including her herself. She even starts with something of a confession of past perceived sins, as she is all to aware that Scientology will strike at her as they are known to do, by using information gleaned from auditing to embarrass, intimidate and discredit. She knows she is now "fair game." Even with the little that I knew about her, her account of her early years with her family and struggles as an actress are highly entertaining, and make an honest impression that makes you feel more like a confidant than a reader. For this type of book, it is, surprisingly, very well written - free of fanciful prose, but deeply engaging, concise and highly personal. The early biographical chapters are vital, as it turns out, as it sets a very clear stage for why she was bound to one day become a monumental thorn in the side of Scientology. A theme that pops up a few times is how Leah was sometimes perceived as "lacking in class" (code sometimes used to discredit or embarrass truth tellers, female ones in particular) in comparison to the norm of perceived celebrities and society's elite. This book shows, clearly, that she has more class than the majority of Hollywood's elite put together. I can't wait to read the remaining 20%, and regardless of my ignorance of her acting career, with this book she's become one of my favorite people. If only more people in the world had the guts that Leah clearly has. More so than even the recent Going Clear documentary, this book, in my opinion, has the potential to expose Scientology for the abusive, draining, exploitative, paranoid and disingenuous organization that it has become, the Church of Cruise and Miscavige. And if you're looking for a real window into the bizarre, rarefied world of celebrity scientologists (Leah attending Tom Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes, for example, and the subsequent fallout after she is brazenly manipulated to get J Lo and Marc Anthony to attend as well, is jaw dropping) you need look no further. Highly, highly recommended.

I admit, I haven’t really watched a lot of stuff with Leah Remini, I’m familiar with her from King of Queens, but that is about it. My mother has indicated that she has been on a lot of the talk shows lately talking about this book. I picked it up mostly for the insight into Scientology. I was not disappointed, but in the process of learning a bit more about scientology, there were some really interesting insights into her childhood, as well as her experiences getting into show businesses. This is a very quick read and it starts off right away by jumping into the issue of Scientology, so, if that is the reason why you are picking up the book, I recommend it for that aspect. I think that it is also useful to get the perspective of someone who is brought into Scientology through their family and it discusses how the appeal of the organization somewhat lured her mother into the organization and kept her persisting in it as an adult. It’s actually a really good insight/manual into understanding psychological aspect of cults, even if it is unintentional, it provides a personal aspect to one’s reflection on the process. It actually kind of highlights an abusive relationship with the organization, one in which a person stays even when it’s clear it might not be the healthiest relationship. Think riding a boat to the middle of nowhere and getting dumped in the water. However, these things are told in personal narratives, which Leah at no point is trying to label or, but just tell a story. At the same time, there are a lot of rewards that are highlighted for being a member of Scientology, especially in terms of networking within the Hollywood circles. It is also interesting to see how the fall-out and consequences for breaking with the church comes to light, in particular, Leah outlines her own humanity, pointing out areas in her life where she has messed up at the very start of the book, essentially expected to get sued by Scientology. In reading about the processes of other people and herself, there seems to be a strong leaning towards lawsuits by Scientology (which, many are aware of). Leah mostly keeps the story within the framework of her time directly in Scientology, with the final 10% (Kindle version) highlighting her time outside of the church and just how emotionally and socially devastating it was to her initially.Great read. Especially for those who are interested in Scientology. I think that the detail and first person account does a good job of at least tying it down to one person and their personal experiences.

You may ask “What sets this apart from many books of its genre?”. Well, let’s first look at what one would expect from such a book, if one has read a good number of other books making the same claim. I, for one, was fully expecting to see, in order:1) The way you think is making you poor; here’s how to think rich2) Here is how to keep track of (and manage) your cashflow3) You should make your money work for you in a scalable fashionAnd is that what we got? Yes, yes it is.

However! What separates this book from so many of its ilk is that it is light on rhetoric and inspirational stories, and instead devotes much more of its space to providing quite dense practical information. The reason that I say “roadmap” is a good descriptor is that there’s a lot in this book that (if you’re serious!) will result in you looking up its ideas elsewhere, double-checking data, reading alternate sources, etc. Where this book’s greatest value lies — to me — is in its function as a well-organized set of pointers; it demystifies what is a baffling subject area to many, gives the reader a set of core tools, and prods them off on their way.In criticisms, I have two small observations:1) As others have mentioned, the book could stand to pass through the hands of an editor. For one example, Kho lists reasons why it is good to have extra streams of income (itself a superfluous chapter; I think every reader knows that already), but these reasons are repetitive and also include such “reasons” as “Build a New Income Stream” and “Diversified Income Sources” — ie, listing the premise itself several times as a reason for the premise.2) On a technical note, the author advocates DCA investing that may be frustratingly impractical to many of more modest wealth, due to per-trade fees, minimum buys, and so forth. But there's plenty of other content to make up for this. All in all, I’d say the book has its faults, but is a great introduction and overview to a topic that is so essential, yet renowned for being intimidating and inaccessible.

The Millennial Roadmap to a Rich Life by Jeremy Kho is a guide on how to be successful in life financially by beginning your preparation for later in life early on. The book makes some very good points. All too often, young people do not take their finances seriously early on. This can have several very negative consequences. The individual does not learn proper spending, saving, or investing habits early on which become more challenging to learn later as the negative habits tend to be too ingrained to change. What Jeremy does next is go on to explain how young people can start to creak the bad habits and what sorts of good habits they should replace them with. The goal of the book is to teach young people how to make wise decisions with their money so that they can have a less stressful life financially later on.I appreciate the goal of the book and I feel that Jeremy does a good job of pointing out good habits and bad habits. With that being said, I have serious issues with their piece of writing. The book is in desperate need of an editing job, so much so that it is a distraction to the reader. Things and people are constantly changing from singular to plural and at times it would appear that words are just completely missing from sentences. This causes the reader to be confused over what is actually being discussed and what the actual meaning is. A slower approach to the writing and some time with an editor could easily handle many of the issues that I saw. Again, the message is good but the presentation is where the flaws were.

This book came in handy at the moment when I was starting to seriously think about what I place value on, and how should I manage my finances in life, because I wanted to change something. The “Millennial Roadmap…” will make you think about your personal money like it is company money. I am not surprised to see that it treats millennials as entrepreneurs, as, though not all of us are, I know many of my friends who agree that working for a steady 9-5 job just won't cut it!Jeremy Kho gives a basic guide to key aspects of money management, including money beliefs, handling multiple funds at the same time, and he provides multiple practical tools that will help you calculate as a seasoned investor or at least, deepen your investment knowledge so that you don't feel so alienated from the moneymaker’s world.Millennials should use the advantage of growing in the Internet era and the access to the information pool available. If you are aware of this fact but don't know where to start this book will help you get to the bottom of it. You'll find valuable links about the stock market and info on how to read and interpret them, as well as links to millionaires success stories. The point is to start saving and investing as early as possible to make it work for you in the best possible way. This is not an empty talk book. It's a ‘do’ book. It just reconfirmed my intention to start putting a share of my money into a stock investment fund. Four stars because I found the overall structure overwhelming - I had to return to read certain passages twice. Some editing work will do wonders.

Samples from the Book Click to view larger. Click to view larger. Click to view larger. A Q&A with Erik Spiekermann How did you first become interested in typography? A printer in our neighbourhood gave me a small tabletop platen press and some type when I was 12. Do you have a favorite typeface? Which one is it and why? Historically it would be Berthold’s Block, because that was the first one I ever looked at closely and later redrew one of its variants as one of my first excursions into typedesign. But my favourite typeface of the day is the one that works really well for a project, whether it’s designed by myself or by one of my colleagues. It helps that I am friends with a lot of type designers, so using their faces is also very personal. Your book, Stop Stealing Sheep, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. How has the design world changed over the past 20 years? Do we have 500 pages and doesn’t everybody know the answer? Seriously, that is too big a question to answer in one paragraph. The good news is that design becomes ever more important as the world grows more complex. Designers are interpreters: we need to translate the world to people by making complex issues and processes visible. Your book is now available in its 3rd edition. What new information will your readers learn in this edition? Type is read on screen as well as on paper. We have new technologies and type has always adapted to technology. Choosing the right type hasn’t become any easier, so a few new conditions and rules are explained. Your book isn’t a tutorial on typeface, but rather an invigorating jaunt filled with history, examples, and opinions. Whom did you write the book for? The original brief from Adobe back in 1992 was, (in their words, not mine) the "average secretary" who now had type at her fingertips. Which companies do you feel make the best design and typeface choices? Those that are aware of their true message, know who their public is, listen to outside experts and are not afraid to go out and try something new. Bullshit has never been a good adviser. What's a good example of a company or product using the wrong typeface? All those that hide behind well-tried, popular choices without considering the actual situation, the readership, the intended impression. I think Apple could do better than using Helvetica which is neither original nor suited to small screens. What elements do you consider when making a typeface decision? Tone of voice, languages that need to be used, technical constraints, readership, cultural constraints (i.e. particular reading habits), the media involved, the budget... You were quoted in the Design Council as saying that the staff of The Economist were "the best clients I’ve ever had." What makes a good client and how does this help you as a designer? What can a designer or agency do to help create good clients? Not take part in pitches (my company, Edenspiekermann, does not do pitches), listen carefully (which you cannot do within a pitch situation), have an opinion and not be afraid to voice it, do your homework, avoid doing things because they’re "in", don’t perform for your peers. Be honest, learn to say no, consider yourself a partner and not a vendor. And don’t be afraid to ask for proper payment for the value you create. You were a signatory on the First Things First 2000: A Design Manifesto, which proposes "a reversal of priorities in favor of more useful, lasting and democratic forms of communication - a mindshift away from product marketing and toward the exploration and production of a new kind of meaning." How have you incorporated the tenets of the manifesto into your work as a designer? We have published our own manifesto and we will not work for clients whose aims we do not agree with. But that has to do mainly with their attitude, not their products. I call it the "asshole rule": we do not work for assholes, however cool their product may be. You say of Helvetica that it doesn’t have any contrast to it. But you have also called it beautiful. Can you please clarify your position on Helvetica? It is perfect for what it is. Helvetica was designed to have no specific character and the designers achieved that. So it is beautiful in that sense, but not suited to a lot communication tasks that require an attitude, a voice. Neither is it suited to be used small on screens because too many of its characters can be confused with each other, like l and I, 3 and B, or rn and m. In your keynote conversation with Jeff Veen at Gigaom, he commented that there is a tremendous amount of fashion involved in typography, which changes all the time. What’s the latest fashion in typography? By the time you read this, it’ll have changed. Right now, we have many fashions going on at the same time. One that’ll be around for a while is the handmade look. Even electronically generated typefaces are made to look like there were printed letterpress from damaged type, or handwritten with wobbly pens. In your book you mention that typefaces that were legible only a few decades ago can hardly be read by modern audiences -- that it has to do with cultural perceptions, not the physical properties of the typefaces. Based on trends in modern typefaces, are there certain typefaces today that will be barely readable in another 50 years? Perhaps those that depend on the look of a technology, like bitmaps. But all type that has its origin in writing will be legible because we’ll still have hands and pens. Or will we? Other than your own book, which resources would you recommend to someone who is interested in learning more about typography? There’s a list in the back of the book, too long to repeat here. There are great websites and blogs, just google "type" and "typography" and you’ll be surprised. Why do you own 13 bicycles? Because they’re all different. Some have different uses, like for racing, for the city, for carrying loads, for going cross country. And some are just plain beautiful. You have a fondness for vintage Leica cameras. Why, and do you actually use them or just collect them? I never collected, I just bought an old one back in the 70s because I couldn’t afford a new one, then upgraded to a new M3, then to a new M6 (all analog film cameras), then a few digital Leicas which weren’t all that good (nor too expensive), then the first really useful digital M8 and recently the new M. Okay, perhaps there are a few old ones in that I found and had to rescue. But I never went looking, don’t belong to a collector’s club. I don’t know the serial numbers of my cameras and I can use every lens I ever bought because Leica hasn’t changed their standard. You appear very fit. Do you attribute this to your love of type? It’s all the long-distance reading. What are you most excited about regarding your upcoming TYPO conference, to be held in San Francisco on April 10-11? What do you hope people get out of it? Find out that there are other typomaniacs out there, that typography is not a closet activity anymore. It is great to listen to inspiring lectures and hang out with your peers. We all need to get out and see what’s happening.

I'm a graphic designer and typographer with 20+ years of experience, a typeface designer, and I teach college level design and typography classes. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to typography, or for new designers who want to learn more about using type well. I use this book as required reading in my Typography 2 courses. This book has been revised every 10 years, to keep up with technology. It is worth your while to pick up the newest edition.

Great resource! Erik is an excellent designer and does a great job articulating the nuances of excellent layout. He is not only practical, he gives the big picture and helps you to understand the "why."

Good but not organized in a very instinctual manner. Overall useful information, it just seemed kind of scattered when I went back to try and look something up.

I watched a video series that referenced this book so I bought it. It is a great book that explains and shows you how type works with design. It is a great reference book.

Great read. If you're studying Typography, this book is for you!

Effortless read, with a playful yet easy on the eyes layout, tons of images and a pinch of humor. This book is everything you should know about typography before you can call yourself a Graphic Designer (on LinkedIn or elsewhere).Wonderfully explained principals, including historic references in a nutshell and type classification. The book displays specific examples of type and makes understanding its characteristics through its anatomy a breeze. You will instantly grasp the handy vocabulary (body, baseline, ascenders, descenders, x-height, cap-height, counter, kern, serif) and become familiar with it in a matter of seconds. You will learn and understand how and why these and other characteristics give different typefaces the personalities used by Graphic Designers to convey a mood, an emotion an attribute. You will quickly realize why some typefaces are more legible than others and become aware of when that matters the most. And there is a lot more. But don't let me bore you any longer with how much I love this book and how much I think that any Graphic Designer should have this in their library.Find out for yourself.

really good one!

I learned more in a short time from this book than all my years previously.

This is a great book! I discovered this book after buying a used copy of Michael Preston's "Medical Hypnotherapy" VHS video course on eBay. The video course is a total gold mine for the hypnotherapist, and this book contains much of the same material.I'm in my third year of hypnotherapy practice and have taken a number of trainings, mostly audio and video courses but also in-person trainings, including those of Cal Banyan, Gerry Kein, Don Mottin, and others. I've read all sorts of hypnotherapy books, many quite excellent. What Preston's work has done for me has been to revolutionize the way I approach my initial client sessions. His "library" technique is extremely effective, reliable, suitable for all kinds of issues, and is well-liked by my clients. I've also found it surprisingly effective as a self-hypnosis technique. It's hard to exaggerate just how cleverly the library technique is put together. Preston takes full advantage of the unconscious mind's ability to operate symbolically and metaphorically. He uses this to avoid getting mired in the gory details of the client's problems, and instead has the client manipulate the problem as a unit.Unlike most authors who present us with a script, Preston explains his in detail, and tells you what to look for, where things sometimes go haywire, and what to do about it.I haven't paid much attention to the initial chapters of the book, and don't know if it's a good introduction to hypnosis or not. For people who already know how to do inductions, it's a total gold mine.

I read this from the library and loved it so much that I had to buy it. If you think you cannot be hypnotized, you are dead wrong. This book explains in detail why we are hypnotized throughout the day. Every time you look away to think of something in your past, you are pulling up deeply stored information. That's a form of hypnosis. You have got to read this book. You will be the smartest one in the bunch.

Great book.. couldn't stop reading it.. i add this knowledge to my practice of reiki in my section and it had truth out to be a success

The book is great. Easy to read with very helpful information. The books & products I buy from Amazon are always great.

With the word "medicine" in the title, I was looking for emphasis on medical hypnosis. Recommend for beginner and intermediate practitioner.

The money is in the prescribing medications, that"s how MD's make the money. MD's say "show me the money." Money, money, money.

After reading this book and watching Dr. Prestons videos, I have now added his amazing approch to hypnosis in my professional sessions and my success with clients has doubled.I love the way Dr. Preston used the convincer test in the actual session, a must learn sytem. If you would like to learn medical hypnosis to help your clients and to have your clients understand what is going on in their mind/bodies connection then I suggest you get this book. Yes, some of the information is dated as with most hypnosis books but the technics used by Dr. Preston are very powerful and work. The book with scripts that are very well written and Dr. Preston explains how to use the scripts, not done by other therapists. This book is a keeper in my collection. If you can find a copy of his video teaching session get it!

I was lucky enough to study with Dr. Preston in 1998...he was very skilled and very loving to those around him. And, he was an excellent teacher, patient and kind, and he engendered patience in his students. Today I learned that he had passed. We have lost a real caring healer.Dr. Michael SpringClinical PsychologistMarriage Enrichment CenterSan Rafael, CA
