Worth every penny.

I don't know what this book was doing in a dollar store but what a find! Although it was written for young adults, as a Senior, I could not put this book down. I just wish this type of history book was available when I was a student of History. Back in the sixties, the history books we were required to read were dry and boring. Marrin weaves facts with the personal side of FDR and the perspective of the world leaders involved in WW II. His writing style kept me turning the pages and it provoked me to examine this time in American history from a personal perspective. I recommend this book to people of all ages.

Albert Marrin is just an incredible writer, and I am grateful. I read all of his books, but was not thrilled with the subject of this one. After all, I know all about Franklin Roosevelt. WRONG!Boy, do I not know all about him. This is a riveting, thought-provoking, powerful, amazing read. I keep reading chunks to my husband and he loves Marrin too, and I know he will read it--and then I will be forced to listen to him reading chunks aloud to me.This man tells incredible true stories and makes them page turners. I cannot praise his writing enough. Read it! (My husband believes these books should not be labeled for young people in any way..they are compellingly good for adults too!)

A wonderful book! I love reading history and nobody tells the story better than Albert Marrin. He always tells the truth in an unvarnished and honest way. The book marketed as young adult nonfiction but is a compelling read for anyone of any age.

Wow, I could not put this book down. It is well written, very dramatic (his mother, WWI, Great Depression, WWII and much more) and thoroughly covers the life and presidency of FDR.

Amazing, balanced overview of Roosevelt's strengths/weaknesses as well as a very readable overview of the crises he dealt with. Good for anyone wanting a readable option of that time period, adult or middle schoolers.

The Asian actor and one of the women appear nude in the play, and while the woman’s nudity may be more implied than literal, it is difficult to imagine how the male nudity (which is briefly frontal) can be avoided. The set is equally demanding. The play is written in three acts. Each act contains multiple scenes that occur in different locations at different points between 1966 and 1988, and the set must be able to support rapid shifts in time and place.M. BUTTERFLY is an extremely complex script that operates on several different levels. In one sense, it is a view of the culture clash between east and west; in another sense, it makes a statement on gender roles and the perception of gender, and the multiple ways in which gender can be exploited. The play draws heavily from the Puccini opera MADAME BUTTERFLY, which tells the story of a Japanese geisha who commits suicide when her American husband abandons her, but the play ultimately inverts these roles. The play also draws heavily from the espionage scandal of real-life French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and his lover, Chinese opera singer Shi Pei Pu, who used their relationship to pass secret information to the Chinese government during the Vietnam War.It is difficult to discuss the play without revealing the plot devices which make the play so intriguing. Although the espionage element drives the plot, the play is actually more concerned with the way in which people deceive themselves about each other, and how that delusion can operate in even the most physically intimate relationships. We are not always who we think we are, and the people around us are not always who they seem to be. Given the difficulties of casting and set, I think the play is very unlikely to be seen in a community theatre or educational (college, university) theatre; it requires access to a talent pool that few such theatres have.Plays are written to be seen, not read, and M. BUTTERFLY is a case in point. It is very, very difficult to read this script and imagine how it was staged in your head. Act One reads rather slow, and Act Two and Three seem better written in a literary sense, but this does not necessarily have a relation to how the script actually performs in front a live audience. I read David Henry Hwang's "Yellowface" first. And I loved it. It is a brilliant play that does a great job discussing race and discussing the discussions of race. Fabulous.I decided to read the play that put Mr. Hwang on the map: the 1988 Tony award winning "M Butterly." It's ok. There are some good moments and a few interesting observations and funny lines. The movie "The Crying Game" came out a few years after this play, and even though I never saw it, it seemed like everyone talked about it and knew what happened. "The Crying Game" obviously took some plot points (the main one) from "M Butterfly," but with a key difference. The reader/audience knows what is happening for most of the time in "M Butterfly, " while the end of "The Crying Game" was a shock.It was nominated for the Pulitzer in 1989 but lost to "The Heidi Chronicles," a better play. "The Piano Lesson" was also nominated that year but lost. Strangely, "The Piano Lesson" won in 1990. I digress. This is a good play. The Tony Award seems like a bit much, but I'm looking at it from 30 years in the future.Go read "Yellowface." It's great. Far better than this.

I have read both the original version and Broadway version and I definitely prefer the new version. The narrative is woven together better and it uses more facts from the real case to tie this story together better.As a story, what more needs to be said? This is a beautiful and breathtaking work, based off a fantastical real life situation that Hwang helps us understand and give context to using this play. Gallimard is a wonderfully complex characters, simultaneously aware of the imbalanced power dynamics that brought him into this situation but unable to stop himself from taking advantage once he has it. Song Liling both exemplifies the sensuality of the ideal of the female gender while also showing how fragile and manufactured it is. The butterfly twist at the end was amazing. Both are characters trying to navigate and triumph in society's strict gender roles as well as play roles in the global power struggles between China and the western world in that time, and it's a great human perspective on this part of history.For those of you who want to see a modern nan dan/Song Liling (minus the political subterfuge), please go check out Li Yu Gang on youtube. Although he has not had proper Chinese opera training, he's succeeded in portraying the idea Chinese beauty, the pinnacle of womanhood, and he's constantly praised for being beautiful in costume and in his beautiful, feminine, singing voice. I kept picturing him the whole time I read this play.

Wow, this might be the best play I've ever read. The exposition is phenomenal, the unique stage directions really making you vividly imagine the play. Don't watch the Jeremy Irons movie and say you read it if this is for a class, the movie is awful ESPECIALLY compared to this awesome book. It really brings to light the harmful/incorrect nature of orientalism and you see this stereotype (as in, the Asian woman being submissive and modest) come to bite the protagonist in the butt in the end. Very interesting read, I don't know much about the Vietnam War or anything in this era but I understood everything I was reading and couldn't put it down. You won't regret reading this!

The map, printed in 2013, provides great detail of Scandinavia and the Nordics. As other customers have stated, there's also tremendous detail given to the Baltic nations. While not part of Scandinavia, they (especially Estonia) share some overlapping histories, and I found their inclusion a bonus.My only (minor) issue with the map is that it provides detail of Denmark's Faroe Islands, Norway's tiny Jan Mayen island, but not Svalbard, Norway's Arctic archipelago. Seems a bit strange to include the former but not the latter, as Svalbard is a somewhat popular tourist destination. All in all, a good map.

The National Geographic maps are nicely detailed. The scale of the map is good for overall viewing.

I was looking for Norway and Iceland on the same map for a cruise I am taking - this map does the trick!

Went to Norway this summer so bought this to study were I was going. It was very accurate and detailed which made a difference since I was going to smaller towns

A couple of years back I bought two low cholesterol cookbooks at a used book sale; one of them was put out by the American Heart Association. But since it was written in 1989, it was before the invention of "trans fats". So I decided to spring for another.I didn't want the Kindle version for $9, nor the paperback for $13. I went all out and bought the hard covered book for $26. If I'm going to use it much, the paperback will have a hard time surviving 5 years, and I find it hard to just flip through e-books and read them, especially cookbooks, where I want to flip back and forth. Just give me a real book and a pad of post-its, thank you.So I got this last Wednesday, and spent about 6 hours reading it. This is a huge cookbook, at around 700 pages. Maybe 450 to 500 pages are recipes, and the rest is verbiage about healthy eating and so forth. It's nearly twice the size of the earlier version which I have, with many more recipes, but it does lack some very vital information which was in the earlier version, such as how saturated fats translate into cholesterol in the body, and recipes for things like lowfat mayonnaise, and how to replace staples of life with healthier alternatives. This book, for example, instead of telling you that you can beat nonfat evaporated milk for a good whipped cream substitute, tells you to use the nonfat whipped topping from the freezer case at the supermarket (which tastes like vaseline to me). These are some serious flaws.The recipes seem to rely upon really amping up the spices to make up for the missing salt; also, many, many, many of their recipes call for bell peppers, to which I am allergic. If lots of peppers are vital for flavor, I'm kind of sunk. However, I have tried a couple of their recipes, and those were pretty good. If you're not a fan of spicy hot food, be very careful with the use of red pepper flakes, which also seem to be a staple of this cookbook.Overall, this cookbook does a pretty good job of telling you how to cook heart healthy meals. Long and short of it: Good, but not great.

HUGE selection of recipes sure to fit anyone's tastes, but no photos!!!! Photos offer such an inspiration to make a dish, and I miss those so much!!! I would've paid more for the book had they included those. Maybe they were trying to keep the costs down. If so, I can respect that, for sure. It's a very thick book and if you don't need photos, there's a ton here. If you need photos, you might be disappointed.

My wife and I ordered this cookbook as soon as I was released from the hospital. I had had a heart attack at age 58, and healthier eating--low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-sodium, smaller portions--was on the menu. It has now been more than six weeks, and we have eaten about 90 percent of our meals from this book. People ask me, "what do you miss most?" and I have nothing to say. The recipes have yielded such tasty meals that I truly never think about the fact that I'm not getting the salt or fat I was so used to.I recommend this book to anyone who needs or wants to eat healthy food. My wife did not have a heart attack, but she has chosen to eat exactly what I eat (and is losing weight, as I am, because of it) and is enjoying the food every bit as much as I am.Get this cookbook as soon as you can.

This has been a GREAT help.It's for my mom but everyone in my household has come down with something where we need a variation of this diet! I needed a diabetic diet and this meets our needs very well.What i didn't expect was this book doesn't treat you as if you already know how to do certain types of cooking. Online tutorials have not been kind to this newlywed. I've learned so much on top of getting to eat healthier! We've even trimmed down a bit thanks to recipes for homemade broths and seasoning mixes and various other staples for cooking in this book. (Try the taco recipes if you get this, my family loves how flavorful they came out.)Combine this book with a transition from store bought seasoning mixes with more than 100mg of sodium (not % but MG!! If you're also on a "under 1500mg of sodium" limit as well) and canned veggies to frozen and you're well on you're way to better health! (Purely my opinion as my body struggles with preservatives in canned products. I know not everyone can afford dropping cans from their lives. Even We don't buy fresh. I could go into detail but I'm reviewing the book not my life lol)Definitely something to look into, even if you don't have cardiac or diabetic issues!

Until I got this cookbook.I am only 31 years old. And after giving birth to my daughter 7 months ago (and a horrible 12 day hospital stay), I was told I had heart failure (cardiomyopathy). It was devastating. Then once I learned what eating too much sodium really does to me and causes breathing problems, I knew I really had to stick to my Doctor's orders of consuming no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day.I never thought I ate much sodium. I was the kind of person who rarley salted my food, I didn't eat fast food, I tried to get natural or organic ingredients, I even had unsalted butter at home. No one realizes that sodium is in EVERYTHING once you really look at it. So when you're faced with having to restrict your intake, it's daunting and depressing. I cried so many times thinking I'd never get to eat at a restaurant ever again. I'd never have good tasting food again.First I ordered the No-Salt cookbook. Hated it. Most bland food I've ever had.Then I tried this. Oh my god, it allows me to eat CHEESE and BACON! (Wisconsin girl here) I am telling you, you will not think you are eating low sodium meals with this cook book. Not only are the recipes low sodium, but low fat too. They really know how to bring out flavors without salt. My husband cooks recipes from this book every night for me, and even he likes it. I've only had a couple recipes so far that I didn't care for much. This is a winner!Also, look up the AHA Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook.

While the movie focuses on "innocent" players who had had enough of being cheated by their evil penny-pinching owner, the book portrays a more even and complete story. Yes, Comisky was cheap and certainly not well-liked by his players, but several of the "eight" needed very little encouraging to take what they thought would be easy money. And, a special note to Cubs fans (like me) who enjoy holding this scandal over our downtown rivals - the Cubbies threw plenty of games themselves, and there are plenty of pages devoted to it here.

I have long been a fan of both baseball and had seen...more than once...the movie "Eight Men Out." Every time the film showed up on Comcast's schedule, I would watch it.I realized that I needed to know more than what a movie shows. So I read the book. Wow, what great writing! A fascinating look at what a limited-by-time constraints movie just can't present.If you love baseball history or are at all curious about the story of the "Black Sox" I highly recommend Asinov's book. Even if you don't "know" baseball, it's a great read about greed, the pitfalls of our legal system "back in the day," and how otherwise honest, but naive, human beings can be manipulated.

The story of the 1919 Chicago "Blacksox" is a microcosm of America, in my opinion. Asinof does a Wonderful job of giving you not only the major players but their backgrounds as well. He also does an excellent job of recreating what it was like in the 1900's world of Major League Baseball. The story is told with a richness of detail, and also the devotion/heartbreak of a "fan". I bought this book because I have loved the movie for decades, and decided to check the source material. I was thoroughly rewarded with a rich toem, full of feeling and detail. The story contains Gamblers, ballplayers, and other celebrities from 1900's America. The Gambler Arnold Rothstein(Boardwalk Empire) is a fascinating figure, as are the players, owners, and newsmen who are at the heart of this story. Eight Men Out is sympathetic to the ballplayers without ever excusing them for their betrayal of trust. At the end the reader gets a great tale, but also a reminder that, it is not always the talent you have that matters, but the money!!!! btw for the people who question the authors facts, much like the Kennedy assassination, this is a part of history that is very muddled lies and double crosses abounded, so for everything he got wrong(or indulged) their are a 100 details that paint a very true scene, and ultimately it is up to the reader to decide who they blame and who they forgive!!!

"Eight Men Out" was first published in 1963 but may still be considered the definitive account of the 1919 Black Sox scandal which is often brought up in today's media as a reference to the current black spot on baseball ("steroids is the biggest scandal since 1919..."). The Chicago White Sox's loss in the 1919 World Series caused by eight (well, one of the 8--Buck Weaver--actually played to win) players who agreed to throw the series as part of a gambling conspiracy was very complex with many names involved. The strongest part about Asinof's book is how clearly he explains the workings of the series fix. The official trial documents were lost and most of the survivors of that time who were in anyway close to the fix refused to cooperate with the author.Asinof had to rely in large part on newspaper articles either contemporary or later accounts that revealed hitherto unknown facts about the case. Despite such limitations, Asinof clearly reveals the workings of the gambling world, the motivations of the players involved in the conspiracy, the suspicions of the newspapermen who covered the series, and the response of the higher ups like Charles Comiskey and AL President Byron Johnson in dealing with the scandal. Conjectures were made in the process, but Asinof includes relevant background information on the characters involved to give validity to his interpretations.The planning of the conspiracy (probably the most difficult part of the story to tell) and the games themselves are the most comprehensive and intriguing parts of the book. The trial and the aftermath were also well-written and thorough covering the fates of almost every character involved. I saw a sports memorabilia catalogue that offered a letter signed by Commissioner Landis to Joe Jackson dated April 6, 1922 which stated "In view of the crime in connection with the World's Series of 1919, of course the money about which you inquire cannot be paid to you" (the minimum bid was $5,000--half of what Cicotte received for his part in the conspiracy). This book definitely gave me a better understanding of what that 1919 scandal that ruined the careers of Jackson and seven of his teammates was about. If one is really interested in this subject, I would recommend also looking at other more recently published books to see if there has been more information unearthed since "Eight Men Out."
