This book is.The 1919 World Series scandal was as mysterious as it was destructive. Players were coerced into testimony with the promise of immunity and then indicted based on that testimony. Owners colluded. DAs cheated and lied. Statements were given and then reversed. Pages of testimony and written confessions were lost forever.Through exhaustive research, Asinof was able to piece together from several incomplete records and sources a complete timeline and blow by blow account of the entire scandal. While the movie focuses on "innocent" players who had had enough of being cheated by their evil penny-pinching owner, the book portrays a more even and complete story. Yes, Comisky was cheap and certainly not well-liked by his players, but several of the "eight" needed very little encouraging to take what they thought would be easy money. The book shows in detail how the players (even those who wanted to do the right thing and confess) were railroaded by overzealous prosecutors and baseball owners desperate to protect their investments.This is required reading for any Chicago sports fan. This story shows just how crooked baseball was in those early days. The 1919 World Series was only one of dozens of known "fixed" games in the early 20th century. And, a special note to Cubs fans (like me) who enjoy holding this scandal over our downtown rivals - the Cubbies threw plenty of games themselves, and there are plenty of pages devoted to it here.

I have long been a fan of both baseball and had seen...more than once...the movie "Eight Men Out." Every time the film showed up on Comcast's schedule, I would watch it.I realized that I needed to know more than what a movie shows. So I read the book. Wow, what great writing! A fascinating look at what a limited-by-time constraints movie just can't present.If you love baseball history or are at all curious about the story of the "Black Sox" I highly recommend Asinov's book. Even if you don't "know" baseball, it's a great read about greed, the pitfalls of our legal system "back in the day," and how otherwise honest, but naive, human beings can be manipulated.

The story of the 1919 Chicago "Blacksox" is a microcosm of America, in my opinion. Asinof does a Wonderful job of giving you not only the major players but their backgrounds as well. He also does an excellent job of recreating what it was like in the 1900's world of Major League Baseball. The story is told with a richness of detail, and also the devotion/heartbreak of a "fan". I bought this book because I have loved the movie for decades, and decided to check the source material. I was thoroughly rewarded with a rich toem, full of feeling and detail. The story contains Gamblers, ballplayers, and other celebrities from 1900's America. The Gambler Arnold Rothstein(Boardwalk Empire) is a fascinating figure, as are the players, owners, and newsmen who are at the heart of this story. Eight Men Out is sympathetic to the ballplayers without ever excusing them for their betrayal of trust. At the end the reader gets a great tale, but also a reminder that, it is not always the talent you have that matters, but the money!!!! btw for the people who question the authors facts, much like the Kennedy assassination, this is a part of history that is very muddled lies and double crosses abounded, so for everything he got wrong(or indulged) their are a 100 details that paint a very true scene, and ultimately it is up to the reader to decide who they blame and who they forgive!!!

"Eight Men Out" was first published in 1963 but may still be considered the definitive account of the 1919 Black Sox scandal which is often brought up in today's media as a reference to the current black spot on baseball ("steroids is the biggest scandal since 1919..."). The Chicago White Sox's loss in the 1919 World Series caused by eight (well, one of the 8--Buck Weaver--actually played to win) players who agreed to throw the series as part of a gambling conspiracy was very complex with many names involved. The strongest part about Asinof's book is how clearly he explains the workings of the series fix. The official trial documents were lost and most of the survivors of that time who were in anyway close to the fix refused to cooperate with the author.Asinof had to rely in large part on newspaper articles either contemporary or later accounts that revealed hitherto unknown facts about the case. Despite such limitations, Asinof clearly reveals the workings of the gambling world, the motivations of the players involved in the conspiracy, the suspicions of the newspapermen who covered the series, and the response of the higher ups like Charles Comiskey and AL President Byron Johnson in dealing with the scandal. Conjectures were made in the process, but Asinof includes relevant background information on the characters involved to give validity to his interpretations.The planning of the conspiracy (probably the most difficult part of the story to tell) and the games themselves are the most comprehensive and intriguing parts of the book. The trial and the aftermath were also well-written and thorough covering the fates of almost every character involved. I saw a sports memorabilia catalogue that offered a letter signed by Commissioner Landis to Joe Jackson dated April 6, 1922 which stated "In view of the crime in connection with the World's Series of 1919, of course the money about which you inquire cannot be paid to you" (the minimum bid was $5,000--half of what Cicotte received for his part in the conspiracy). This book definitely gave me a better understanding of what that 1919 scandal that ruined the careers of Jackson and seven of his teammates was about. If one is really interested in this subject, I would recommend also looking at other more recently published books to see if there has been more information unearthed since "Eight Men Out."

In Delivering Alpha, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg shares her experiences managing financial assets for several institutional and private clients over a three decade-long career. Structured as a series of topical discussions, the book attempts to answer the question: How should a money management operation be designed and run so as to generate superior investment returns? Ochoa-Brillembourg seems to be well qualified for this task, having produced an enviable level of long-term outperformance in her own company. Indeed, many of her insights involving topics such as asset allocation strategy, trading alternative assets, and firm governance principles are very illuminating. On the other hand, the order of the discussion is repetitive, quite poorly organized (e.g., illiquidity risk is described in a number of chapters), and often superficial, which greatly limits the effectiveness of the project. The biggest impediment, however, is that she has not really made a clear-cut choice in her target audience—the board-level fiduciaries who manage the organization or the investment staff who manages the assets.Indicative of this expositional problem is the very loose way in which the central concept of alpha is defined. Simply put, alpha is the difference between the actual return a portfolio generates and the expected return it should have earned. Since the first term is measurable, calculating alpha really comes down to how expected returns are measured. Economists tend to specify a formal risk model (such as the CAPM) for this purpose, while practitioners typically use the return to a benchmark index (or series of indexes) or the average return generated by a peer group. The main difference between these approaches is that the former measures the risk of the portfolio very precisely—hence the notion that alpha is a risk-adjusted return—but may not represent a directly investable alternative. Conversely, comparing actual returns to those of a benchmark, which is often a viable alternative to the manager being evaluated, does not take investment risk into account explicitly.Unfortunately, both definitions of alpha are used interchangeably throughout the book, which makes it difficult to understand how a portfolio’s outperformance is supposed to be delivered. In fact, the text is largely silent on exactly how someone should design a portfolio to beat expected returns, although there are a few examples of macro-oriented trades the author made in the past to help her firm achieve its results. Essentially, alpha comes from two types of active decisions: tactically adjusting the asset class weights in the portfolio or selecting superior securities within those asset classes. This fact is acknowledged with the following statement near the end of the book: “The divergence between sentiment and fundamentals is the most reliable long-term source of alpha.” However, other than some occasional vague directives that one should consider investing whenever securities are misvalued, Ochoa-Brillembourg never really explains how we might make those assessments.Several other topic discussions are flawed as well; I’ll mention two here. The author begins the book with a consideration of something she calls “fit theory”, which is just of way of saying that investors should consider how any potential new investment will affect an existing portfolio. This is not a new concept and she does not provide enough detail for the reader to implement the rule-of-thumb formula she suggests. (In fact, the high-yield bond example she offers as an illustration is not helpful because the correlation coefficient necessary for the calculation would not have been available at the time of the investment.) Particularly surprising was the extremely limited coverage on the topic of how to select (or terminate) the outside managers who are responsible for actually investing the asset class-specific portfolios. This is crucial because for an institution that follows the “external manager” model, all of the alpha delivered by security selection will come from these outside agents. Despite stressing that her firm was a pioneer of what is by now an industry-standard approach, the author devotes just two very brief chapters (i.e., about five pages each) to this essential subject.Of course, Delivering Alpha also contains a lot of good information, even if those discussions are not necessarily integrated into a cohesive whole. Notable among these topics are the process for creating an investment policy statement, how to manage portfolio volatility, responsible employee compensation arrangements, and a company’s organization and culture. The problem, though, is that these insights appear somewhat randomly and they are often interspersed with other points that are either misplaced, redundant, or far too terse to be useful. Perhaps the best way to assess this volume’s potential impact is as follows: If you handed the book to both a trustee and a staff member at an institutional investment firm, would either find a sufficient amount of information to execute their fiduciary duties effectively (to say nothing of producing superior investment performance)? Sadly, I think that the answer to that question is very likely “no”. As such, despite containing many thought-provoking points, the work ultimately falls short of its intended goal.

“Delivering ALPHA” is not a book on finance theory but about the methods utilized by the author, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, to deliver Alpha for decades, while Chief Investment Officer at the World Bank and, later, as CEO of her own firm. In the words of the author is “a practical guide to building intelligent, sensible, and sensibly managed portfolios that will deliver Alpha consistently over time”.This highly specialized subject would limit the reading of the book to financial experts, right? Wrong. Even the non-experts can enjoy this book because it also happens to be a guide on how to live sensibly. The lessons learned by Ochoa-Brillembourg in her World Bank career and, later, in running her company, have direct and evident application to the manner we choose to live our lives. The first one of these lessons says: Price is not value. In finance as in life there is a market price which is the same to all buyers but value is different to different buyers, being a function of its synergistic value when combined with your financial or human portfolio. The author tells us: “The largest factor influencing such value, other than price, expected return and risk, is the correlation of the asset to the rest of your portfolio”. This leads to the Fit Theory, according to which not only the price and intrinsic value of the asset are pertinent to our choice but equally important is the fit to our own needs and circumstances.Although the book is primarily written with the large investors in mind it can also be of great help to the small investors. I was particularly interested in her discussion on the Wisdom of Teams and Governing for Success, the product of her extensive experience in managing investment committees.One of the most important policy decisions the author contributed to her stay at the World Bank was the addition of junk bonds to the portfolio of the institution and how this decision contributed to delivering Alpha.There is much in this superbly written book which makes for compelling reading for all readers hoping to get a better grip on the subject.

I enjoyed all the books. If the last few books of the set would have been longer and not ended so quickly, I would have given the series five stars. I really wanted more of Nate and Kayla's story and Book 10 was way too rushed. I needed more. :)

I have read the entire series, and I love it. I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves clean contemporary romance, especially those with princesses, cowboys, or guys in uniform. FYI, this series only has kissing, no sex scenes. The main characters are always good-hearted and likable, usually lovable. About half the books in the series have tautly written, suspenseful sequences that made my heart pound. There are also two story arcs that greatly enrich the series as a whole. The writer clearly has personal experience of ranches and horses in Texas, and this lends authenticity to the subject matter. In addition, the fictional country in Europe and its royal family were realistic enough to make me happy. I was quite impressed with the quality of the writing. I love some of the books so much that I plan to read them again in the near future. I received a free advanced copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

From the beginning with Gideon and the princess on the run, Lacy Williams weaves the most delightful, sweet romances. If you are looking for stories to capture your heart and steal you away, this is a series for you.

A heart warming Romantic stories. I couldn't stop listening to I had my audio book reader on while doing other things.

I loved this book! The illustrations are really wonderful and started some interesting conversations with the kids I have read it to. I also like that she had to learn some valuable lessons in order to win at Wimbledon - like how to be a good sport, control her anger, and learn the rules of the game. The book also does a great job of talking about her past and how she overcame some hyperactivity and getting into trouble to do some excellent things. Lastly, I loved how the book talked about the importance of being grateful to those who help you along the way. Definitely recommend:-)

It's always good for kids to read about flawed heroes. Nobody really, deep down, wants to read about some guy whose only "flaw" is that they didn't brush their teeth before breakfast.Althea Gibson, as the title should make clear, has bigger flaws. As a kid, she was a petty thief. She didn't attend class. She stayed out late. And when she was given an opportunity and people fell all over themselves to help her, all she could do is say she didn't come to work on her *manners*, just her *sports*.She is fun to read about, that's for sure. And the triumph of being the first black person to win a Grand Slam (along with her partner, the first Jewish person to do the same) is sweeter for all that we learn that working on her self control helped with that.There's a nice afterword in the end with more information, including names of her own autobiographies.The one thing about this book I'm not to sure of is the artwork. Throughout the book, Althea is drawn with a wave of rainbow colors around her and following her. It does convey movement and all... but it also looks a little strange. I'm not sure what I think about it yet.

I'm not ashamed to say it. Say the name "Althea Gibson" to me a month ago and you'd have met a blank stare. Say it to me now, however, and you may suffer the indignity of finding me thrusting Sue Stauffacher's newest picture book, "Nothing but Trouble: The Story of Althea Gibson," into your arms while screaming into your ears its high points. This might be so bad either if the book only had a high-point here or there, but the fact of the matter is that "Althea Gibson" is ALL high points. It's a rip-roaring, snorting, fast and frenzied, well-researched, reiterated, illustrated, formulated bit of picture book biography magnificence. With the author of the "Donuthead" books on the one hand and soon-to-be-recognized-for-his-magnificence artist Greg Couch filling in the necessary art, "Althea Gibson" has everything you could possibly want going for it. It's fun. It's funny. It's smart and interesting, and has a flawed heroine you can't help but want to know more about. If your young child is looking for a biography of a woman and you don't know where to turn, I can't think of a better book available to you. There's something about Althea.Ask anyone. Ask her mama her daddy her teacher or the cop down the street that busted her for petty theft. They'll all tell you the same: That Althea Gibson is nothing but trouble. More comfortable tearing up the playground in the 1930s than sitting at a desk in school, Althea has a reputation for recklessness. None of that is enough to scare off play leader Buddy Walker, however. When he sees Althea play sports, he can only see raw talent and untapped potential. With his guidance and the help of the Sugar Hill's ritzy tennis court "The Cosmopolitan", Althea is given the chance to improve her style. Problem is, she has a hard time with being polite, following the rules, and not punching out her fellow players' lights. It takes time and patience and self-control to make Althea the best she can possibly be, but by 1957 she becomes the first African-American to win at Wimbledon. And though she could hog all the credit for herself, Ms. Gibson gives full credit to that amazing Buddy Walker who had the smarts to become her mentor.It's always more interesting to read about a flawed hero. Perfect people do not a fascinating story make. Maybe that's why the trend in children's biographies lately has been to tell the tale of those men and women who weren't made of solid gold from birth onwards. Between Kathleen Krull's, "Isaac Newton", Laura Amy Schlitz's, The Hero Schliemann: The Dreamer Who Dug For Troy and now Stauffacher's, "Nothing but Trouble," biographies for kids are getting better and better with every coming year. The nice thing about Althea is that for all her pouts and ill-manners, she's shown here to be someone who could conquer the world if she just applied a little self-control. As Buddy tells her at one point, "You've got to decide, Althea. Are you going to play your game, or are you going to let the game play you? When I go to the jazz club, I play like a tiger, but I wear a tuxedo." Stauffacher draws much of her dialogue out of Althea's biographies I Always Wanted to Be Somebody and So Much to Live For. Even without such lines, however, the author knows how to put a good story together. This plot is carefully crafted. From the timeline in the back (written on tennis balls, no less) to the great opening line, ("Althea Gibson was the tallest, wildest tomboy in the history of Harlem") to the thin slices of her life, Stauffacher does a stand up job. As Althea's biographer she prefers to concentrate on the role of Buddy Walker, even mentioning in her Author's Note that "Though this is Althea's story it is also Buddy Walker's story." The result is that this tale comes off as a tribute to mentors everywhere. To those people that see potential in certain kids and do what they can to bring such potential to light. And that is the nature of an entirely different kind of hero.Flying just below the radar is illustrator Greg Couch. Ms. Stauffacher may have the wherewithal, wit, and smarts to think to bring Althea's life to the page, but it is Mr. Couch's illustrations that truly deserve attention here. Couch has taken a story that could have been accompanied by staid, simple drawings and instead imbued them with a kind of electricity. Althea doesn't just leap off the page here. She crackles and snaps with an energy you don't usually encounter on your average picture book bio. Couch has chosen to clothe Althea in a hyperactive rainbow that zigs and zags with the girl's every movement and leap. Parents and teachers presenting this book to kids can ask them what they think this rainbow really means. And hopefully they'll notice that when Buddy plays the saxophone (as he did in his own jazz band) the same rainbow colors come out of the instrument. Plus the fact that these rainbows are the sole spot of color against a sepia-tinged background of old photos and scenes from the 30s, 40s and 50s is a nice touch as well. And when, at last, you see Althea win her Wimbledon, she is surrounded at her acceptance speech by a rainbow that has aged and changed from pure primary colors to subtler hues. I also appreciate that there is nothing anachronistic going on in this book. Every picture feels like it has stepped out of history.A co-worker of mine felt somewhat disappointed that the book ends as suddenly as it does. One minute Althea is learning the benefits of playing by the rules (while maintaining her fire) and the next she's won Wimbledon and the story's over. I think this is less a flaw of this specific book than of the picture book biography format in general. You can't linger on a year here or there, however much you might want to. And honestly, this is a book worth discovering. Stauffacher and Couch have found something to say about Althea that hasn't yet been said in the realm of children's literature and their passion in bringing Althea's passion to life is worth taking note of. So stand back now. I'm going to say something and I'm going to say it loud. This book not only pairs well with Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman by Kathleen Krull, it may have supplanted it in my brain as my new favorite picture book sports biography. A must read pick.
